Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg elaborated to NPR Thursday evening about why she decided to release a statement expressing “regret” for her recent criticisms of Donald Trump.
“Because it was incautious. I said something I should not have said,” Ginsburg told NPR’s Nina Totenberg, before repeating the statement she put out Thursday morning.
“That’s exactly how I feel about this whole business,” Ginsburg told Totenberg of the statement.
Totenberg noted that Ginsburg has a record of being transparent with the press, whether it was being open about the cancer treatments the justice was receiving a few years ago or a correction she wrote fixing a small error in one of her opinions. Totenberg asked Ginsburg if Thursday morning’s statement was acknowledging a similar “goof.”
“I stand, Nina, by what I said. I would say yes to your question, and that’s why I gave the statement,” Ginsburg said. “I did something I should not have done. It’s over and done with, and I don’t want to discuss it any more.”
