Man charged in crime spree involving 3 fires, showering in stranger's home

WYOMING, MI -- A Muskegon man faces eight felony charges for a bizarre crime spree that involved him allegedly setting three fires, stealing two cars and showering in a home where a teen was asleep.

Casey George Marvin, 34, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in connection with the July 5 incidents that began with a blaze at GS Fireworks on 44th Street SW, just east of Burlingame Avenue, in Wyoming.

The suspect's spree ended later that morning, when police rammed the stolen vehicle he was driving.

A witness told police he saw Marvin exit GS Fireworks and light a firework back into the building about 6:30 a.m.

Marvin allegedly entered the man's car and tried to steal his vehicle, an officer wrote in a probable cause affidavit filed in Wyoming District Court. A physical fight ensued when the victim refused.

Court records allege Marvin went to Wood Creek apartments just behind the fireworks store and set fire to a bag of stuffed animals on a balcony.

A husband and wife were about to leave the complex when they spotted the GS Fireworks blaze and returned to their apartment to call 911. Marvin entered their running Ford Explorer and drove off, police said.

He drove the Explorer off the road. A witness reported seeing Marvin burning a rag that was stuffed in the fuel tank.

He fled to a home nearby in the 4000 block of Oriole Avenue SW, where 19-year-old Juan "Johnny" Covarrubias was asleep on the couch while his parents were at work. The teen awoke about 8 a.m. to find a shirtless man standing with a towel over his shoulder and holding a jug of orange juice.

The man, who appeared freshly showered, grabbed Covarrrubias' car keys and said, "I'm going to need these," the teen told MLive and The Grand Rapids Press.

Police said Marvin also took a cellphone and set fire to a bedroom while the teen went to a neighbor's home to call 911. He allegedly took off with Covarrubias' Volkswagen Jetta.

Before leaving, he told the teen, "You can come with me, but I don't think that would be a good idea."

A Grandville police officer spotted the car and gave chase with Wyoming police. A Wyoming officer used his patrol car to ram the Jetta as it went the wrong way on 36th Street near Bulingame Avenue.

Police said they recovered stolen property and other evidence in the car.

The charges are split up into two criminal cases. In one case, Marvin is charged with carjacking, first-degree arson, third-degree arson, unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle, and arson - preparation to burn property $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.

He's also charged with first-degree home invasion, second-degree arson and third-degree fleeing police.

Marvin is jailed on $1 million bond.
