Mistake in M-130 count didn't affect the outcome

Residents repealed ordinance aimed at nondiscrimination by margin of 1,845 votes

Residents repealed the city of Texarkana, Ark.'s nondiscrimination ordinance 2,465 votes to 620, according to a recount of the ballots Tuesday.

The new complete but unofficial results come after the Miller County Election Commission discovered a potential error in the initial vote count, conducted on election day, June 28, and unanimously decided to carry out a public recount.

Election Coordinator Linda Crawford said Thursday that commissioners had double-counted the election's early votes.

The recount did not change the election's ultimate outcome. Residents chose to repeal the controversial Ordinance No. M-130, which sought to prohibit the city and businesses that contract with it from discriminating on the basis of several characteristics, including sexual orientation and gender identity.

The recounted results make the voting proportion 79.9 percent for repeal to 20.1 percent against it, nearly a 4 to 1 ratio.

The Election Commission plans to certify the results Thursday.
