What are the Lewes Bonfire Night celebrations?

The small, picturesque town of Lewes lights up for one night of the year in celebration of the famous treason of Guy Fawkes and his band of men.

One of the most famous fifth of November events, it is the perfect way to celebrate if you are heading south to the East Sussex area.

On the evening there is a Grand Procession that runs through the town with costumed paraders brandishing fire and sticks.

The event then divides into six with each of the six Lewes Bonfire Societies hosting a bonfire and their own fireworks show.

When were the Lewes Bonfire Night celebrations and what were the effigies?

Although Bonfire Night, as always, fell on November 5, the Lewes celebrations were on Saturday November 4.

The Grand Procession started moving through town at 8pm and the fires will be light at 9.30pm followed shortly after by a firework display.

Every year, bonfire societies burn effigies of controversial or scandal-hit figures.

Last year, two effigies of President Donald Trump went up in flames, and figures of PM Theresa May, Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and Michael Gove were spotted at the event.

This time around, The Prime Minister and Trump again made appearances, while effigies of Kim Jong-un and Harvey Weinstein also got the full treatment.

These need to be bought either in person or over the phone from the Lewes Tourist Information Centre (187 High Street, Lewes BN7 2DE) or on any of the bonfire society websites.

How do I get to Lewes?

The roads in Lewes are closed off for the event which means that driving is virtually impossible and parking even less likely still.

The organisers recommend accessing the site by bus, rail or using a taxi service.

If you are planning on heading south using the train service plan your route carefully taking into account the Southern Rail strikes as the line between Lewes and Wivelsfield will not be running at all there cold be severe delays to their other lines.
