Net freedom in free fall over tricky social media
A survey of 65 countries by non-profit Freedom House reported that a record number of governments restricted mobile internet service for political or security reasons in 2016-2017.
India has been designated only “partly free” — social commentary and criticism of authorities areas where internet freedoms have invited clampdown, reprisals, threats and even jail. For social media, it is a grim picture across continents, evident in the manipulation of Facebook and Twitter during the US elections.
