Tis The Season To Be Hired: 10 Top Flexible Holiday Jobs

This article is more than 6 years old.

Holiday hiring for flexible jobs is on the rise, according to a recent report by FlexJobs, which specializes in part-time and flexible jobs. Peak hiring for flexible and seasonal jobs, which include telecommuting, remote work, freelance or contact jobs, is before the holiday season.

Seasonal hiring is slightly higher than last year, FlexJobs’s Brie Reynolds says. Target plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers, a 40% increase from seasonal hiring last year. Currently, there are more than 33,000 job offerings on FlexJobs’s site for seasonal work. All these jobs are temporary and most boast flexible hours.

In order to create this list, Reynolds identified holiday or seasonal jobs offered on the site and tallied which types of jobs were seeking the most hires.

“Job data of available hiring was analyzed to see what career fields were offering a lot of opportunities and what specific jobs were out there,” she says.

Overall, employers seeking flexible workers are interested in roles that require personal interaction, Reynolds notes. “We see companies like Amazon and Apple ramping up their home customer-service positions,” she says. “We see retailers hiring for more at-home sales and customer support positions.”

Many positions are in customer service and sales, though the list of jobs hiring also ventures outside that sphere. The top  job is data entry and image edit clerk, and although that is a short-term, seasonal job, it is not related to retail. “People think of seasonal jobs as retail during the holidays, and that’s a big component, but what we look at is more professional-level and flexible seasonal jobs,” Reynolds says.

Working in a flexible job is a good way to get your foot in the door with a company you are interested in, senior career specialist Reynolds says. Some companies hire full-time employees through their seasonal or flexible work, but most of these jobs have a set end date. Many jobs are cyclical and hire workers around the holidays each year.

The position of seasonal cashier ranks second on FlexJobs’s list of jobs hiring now. That job is listed as a full-time, temporary job. Others, such as seasonal field recruiter, are part-time jobs.

Reynolds differentiates between jobs that require experience versus retail positions where employers are looking to hire as many workers as possible. Flex Jobs openings are helpful for people looking to make extra money but don’t have the time to commute to a second job, she says. “The main thing is people who are looking to make extra income,” Reynolds says.
