Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Stevenage IV on Sat 11 Aug 2018 at 01:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets.

Match report Northwood town 2nd XI welcomed Stevenage 4th XI at home on a cloudy day. After a fine spell of hot summer, normal playing conditions (cold & cloudy) resumed. Town won the toss and decided to bowl first on a pitch that looked a little damp and had some moisture from recent rains.

New ball partners, Syed and S. Patel started the usual services with accuracy & control but Stevenage opener Derrick in particulate seemed to be determined to take Syed on and hit him over the infield for couple of boundaries but soon fell to S. Patel caught by P. Patel who took a brilliant one handed diving catch to his right. S. Patel got the other opener out in his next over again caught by P. Patel.

It was quite evident by this time that situation demanded the batsmen to play the patient game and respect the conditions but the Stevenage batsmen had a different ideas, keep smashing the ball. Syed who was bowling with good control was also rewarded by 2 quick wickets in the form of Stevenage no 3 & 4. At the end of 14 overs, Stevenage score was 50 for 4.

Double bowling change meant it was now the turn of every reliable P. Patel & Avadhani to apply further strangle on Stevenage batting that was already choking. P. Patel in his second over induced Stevenage no 5 to play a shot in the air that was never on, only to see reliable S. Patel over run the ball. Such was the comedy that eve Stevenage batsmen stopped in the middle to have a laugh but S. Patel quickly recovered and took the stumps out to eventually get the batsmen run-out and earned the final laugh. P. Patel got another couple of wickets in his next few overs, making it 80 for 7 in 25 overs.

Stevenage in the form of no 8 & 9 finally decided to apply themselves and started to respect the conditions and began to stitch a partnership and with some help of extras, courtesy of some uneven bounce, they managed to take the score above 110. Just when the partnership was looking threatening, R. Patel produced a beauty to take No 8 stumps out bringing an end to it. A bowling change in the form of man with the golden gun (arm), Motiwala was introduced who cleaned the rest of the tail in the matter of 2 overs.

A score that seemed below par but good enough to defend on a tricky pitch. A great bowling effort in the field and equally excellent effort in field with some excellent catching ensure town were chasing a low but a tricky total.

After a lovely tea, town openers Ramawat & Mekwan started the chase and as expected, Mekwan hit the first ball of the innings for a massive six, sending the Stevenage keeper on the floor laughing (not sure what the joke was). Mekwan kept playing his shots on anything full or short and defended the good deliveries. Skipper Ramawat, from the other end was simply enjoying the Mekwan show. Mekwan was quite clear in his intentions and took Stevenage opening bowler for 24 runs in his 3rd over hitting 2 massive 6s and couple of 4s and raced to his 50 in 8th over while Ramawat was on 4 on the other end. The score line at the end of 10th over was 70 for 0 with Mekwan on 54*. Ramawat (4) soon fell trying to dispatch a full toss delivery on the leg side.

Pandey joined Mekwan in the middle and continued intent-full cricket while Mekwan show continued from the other end. Mekwan was in such a mood and looked like he was competing with himself to beat his previous hit. In the process Mekwan (76) got out bowled in the 15th over but before getting out, he ensured that the game was all over. Needing 12 runs to win, enters Rawson in the middle and straight away hit couple of lovely boundaries to seal the game for the towns by 8 wickets.

It was a fantastic win for the town, again based on some excellent bowling efforts by all and at present it seems the bowling unit is functioning like a well-oiled German machine. In the batting department, it was all Mekwan show. Not to forget, it was also an excellent day in the field as town took all their chances with some excellent catching that we have seen this season so far.

The journey is going to get tougher from now on-wards but we have ensured in the last few months that we are ready for it and all geared up for the next few games which by the looks of it, is going to be a cracking of a finale to this season.
