Midfielder Windass angered many of the Ibrox faithful after telling supporters to shut up in Tuesday's 2-0 win at Firhill

The 24-year-old put his finger to his lips to shush the away end after hitting the opener in Tuesday’s 2-0 win at Partick Thistle.

Boss Murty has already pledged to quiz Windass over the gesture.

But Ibrox legend McCoist reckons the fan reaction to the former Accrington player's celebration is over the top.

Speaking on his weekly talkSPORT show, McCoist said: “As a high profile player in this country, the one thing that goes with the territory is that you, at some point in your playing career, are going to get a bit of stick and abuse off football fans.

“So how do you handle it? The best way from his point of view is just to ignore it and go and celebrate.

“But we have seen players all the way down the years and seasons who don’t handle it particularly well.

“I remember Cammy Fraser who was an ex-teammate of mine and he ended up having some great seasons at Rangers when he played down the right hand side.

“I remember him getting a bit of stick from the Rangers fans, and he did a lot more than tell them to shush!

“Now clearly, absolutely clearly, that's the wrong thing to do.

“But sometimes I can see players getting frustrated themselves and just reacting in the wrong way.

“But we’re talking about somebody here who went ‘shush’.

"He didn’t make any real gestures that would end him up in Stewart Street police station for a fortnight!

“He’s told the fans to shush. So come on fans, I meant lighten up a little bit, it’s a shush!”
