Ragin' Cajuns Head To SLU For A Midweek Matchup

It's the 45th meeting between the Cajuns and the Lady Lions and Louisiana brings a five game winning streak against SLU into the game.

LAFAYETTE – This week, for the 45th time in school history, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team will face off with the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions, as they make the short trip east, on Wednesday, Dec. 13, to Hammond, La., for a midweek matchup at the University Center with tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
           
Louisiana brings a 3-6 record into the game, having lost to the Auburn Tigers, 70-60, on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Cajundome.  While SLU comes in with on a two-game losing streak, with their record sitting at 1-7.  The Lady Lions lost their last game 112-62 to the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday, Dec. 10.

CAJUNS CARRY FIVE: Going back to 2011, the Cajuns have owned the Lady Lions having won the last five games.  Louisiana won 69-57 in Hammond, on Nov. 29, 2011, to kick start the five-game streak and the Cajuns have gone 2-0 in Hammond while going 3-0 in Lafayette.  Overall SLU is 28-16 against Louisiana but in a series, that has been historically about runs for both teams the Cajuns have chipped away at the Lady Lions' lead in the series.

COACH BRODHEAD VS. LOUISIANA SCHOOLS: In the five plus seasons that Louisiana head coach Garry Brodhead has been at the helm the Ragin' Cajuns have played schools in their own state well, posting a 29-10 record against schools across Louisiana.

CAJUNS GET TIGER BIT: On Friday, Dec. 8, the Cajuns welcomed the SEC's Auburn Tigers to the Cajundome.  Louisiana gave Auburn all they could handle but in the end Louisiana fell just short, losing 70-60 to the Tigers.  In the game Louisiana stuck with Auburn, with the Tigers holding only a four-point advantage at the end of each quarter through the game.
           
But powered by a double-double from Auburn's Unique Thompson (29 points, 12 rebounds) Auburn pulled away in the fourth quarter and their 74 percent shooting percentage from the free throw line helped put the Cajuns away.
           
Louisiana was led in scoring by sophomore Malachi-Seraphin Williams, who finished with a career high 17 points on 7 for 13 shooting while grabbing three rebounds and adding three assists in 30 minutes of action.  Senior Kendra Howard helped the Cajuns cause off the bench scoring 12 points (4 for 8) and grabbing four rebounds in just 17 minutes of action.

BURTON CRASHES WITH THE BEST OF THEM: Over the past seven games sophomore Kimberly Burton has led the Cajuns in rebounding in five of them grabbing 44 boards during that stretch averaging 6.3 rebounds during those seven games.  She leads Louisiana in rebounds with 45 on the season (5.0 average) and that's good enough to put her among the top 20 in the Sun Belt Conference, Burton currently sits 19th in conference with those numbers.

WHAT THE LADY LIONS BRING: SLU comes into the game averaging 58.0 points per game while shooting 31 percent from the field.  They're led in scoring by senior Taylin Underwood who's the only woman on the team averaging in double figures as Underwood is putting in 17.4 points per game.
           
In SLU's lone win of the season, against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla., Underwood became the Lady Lions' leader in three-point field goals made and she's 113 for 359 (32 percent) in her career from beyond the arc.  So far, this season she's shot a career high 37 percent from three-point range on 27 for 74 shooting.
           
Opponents are averaging 78.5 points per game and opponents are outscoring the Lady Lions by 20.5 points per game.  SLU is allowing teams to shoot 44 percent from the field against them and the Lady Lions are being outrebounded by a margin of 12.6 per game.

HOW TO LISTEN/WATCH THE GAME: Wednesday's game against SLU will be carried on ESPN 1420 and the play-by-play duties will be handled by Steve Peloquin.  As for the stream, it'll be carried on the Southeastern Channel, a part of the Southland Conference Digital Network, and the game will be called by John Sartori and Wesley Boone.
