bird turkey stocks are dropping but storage stocks are still higher than either growers or processors would like. As a result, Turkey Farmers of Canada is reviewing the methodology in its quota allocation process. “Our allocation process
hasn’t been reviewed in over a decade,” BC’s TFC director Vic Redekop told growers at their meeting in Surrey, October 24.
Recent attempts to reduce
the national turkey quota have failed because BC and other western provinces oppose pro rata reductions. Redekop pointed out the glut of storage is in Ontario and Quebec, inferring that is where production needs to be reduced. Meanwhile, the BC Turkey
Marketing Board plans to increase efforts to market turkey to BC’s growing ethnic population. “We will conduct a
marketing program in the spring aimed at the Asian market,” BCTMB vice-chair Les
Burm said. The $150,000 campaign will be funded equally by the BCTMB and the Investment Agriculture Foundation Buy Local program. “We are studying how we can encourage turkey usage by Asians who are mostly unfamiliar with it,” he said.
