Catastrophe Queen

One hot mess. One hot boss. One too many hot encounters... It’s not you. It’s me. No, seriously. It is me. Not only does my name literally mean “unfortunate,” but that’s the story of my life. Everything I touch turns to crap. An apartment fire—that I swear I was not responsible for—means I’m living back at home with my sex-mad parents. Yay, me! Which is why I need my new job as personal assistant to Cameron Reid to get back on my feet. Three months in this job and I can move back out and, hopefully, remember to turn off my flat iron once in a while. Ahem. On paper, my job is easy. Make coffee. Book appointments. Keep everything in order. Until I walk in on my boss, half-naked, wearing nothing but the kind of tiny white towel that dreams are made of. Now, nothing is easy—except our mutual attraction. But he’s my boss, and you know what they say about mixing work and unless you do p*rn, it’s just not worth it. Or is it?

Favorite Quotes:

There was no doubting that I was blushing this time around. You could fry eggs on my cheeks.

“Eddie! Nobody wants to see those gnashers! They’re bad enough in your mouth when you smile like a serial killer!” Aunt Grace shouted, reaching over with the straw from Mom’s glass of water and prodding the dentures with it.

You mean my tall, thin, blonde-haired, blue-eyed colleague who could charm a condom onto a monk?

I wanted to check him out like a library book.

I was so single that my vagina had pretty much sewn itself up in anticipation of never getting laid again.

She insisted on you coming in so she could check you out and ask you everything including the size of your penis. She said, and I quote, “Never marry a man with a small penis.”

I wore my second-best dress which happened to be a little black number that gave me the confidence of a thousand witches ready to rise against humanity.

You are the dramatic one… You got one small cut from the broken mug this morning and declared that you were bleeding out.

My Review:

While reading this highly amusing and cleverly penned tale, my reading was frequently interrupted with giggle-snorts and full on laughing aloud. This was my introduction to the highly comedic Emma Hart but I was a quick convert to her cult. I was totally enamored with her agile wit, snappy writing style, and adorable characters. Mallory had a sassy and keenly observant nature but was a Calamity Jane type and a hazard to herself as well as objects and others nearby, as she was accident-prone and a trouble magnet. She also had a wickedly keen sense of humor, a flair for drama, a vivid imagination, a highly eccentric and loquacious family who excelled at squabbling, and a crush on her handsome new boss who appeared more than able to hold his own with her during exchanges of clever quips and verbal sparring. The storylines were highly appealing and pleasantly engaging while the writing was crisp and cunningly comical. I adored every well-chosen word and grieved reaching the final page.

Holy hot fudge sundae. Emma Hart has only gone and done it again! I love the hype that comes with an Emma Hart new release. It gets me so excited and this beauty didn’t disappoint! After Tequila Tequila I didn’t think it was possible to beat but Mallory is one sassy chick and I love Cameron. He is definitely new book boyfriend material.

Mallory is a walking disaster. If first impressions were everything this girl would stick in your mind for the wrong reasons. She’s moved back home and currently looking for a new job. Her recent set of interviews offer the promise of an office job. The problem is her new boss. He may or may not have seen her dirty laundry.

Cameron Reid is a rich, sexy bachelor with a mind for business and a body to die for. Nobody’s boss should be that good looking but what does a little eye candy hurt? The problem is these two have already met and Mallory is more than the average assistant. She will spill your coffee but won’t leave you hanging.

Mallory is a fun loveable character. She’s clumsy but adorable. She’s the perfect assistant but you have to learn her quirks. Cameron and Mallory gel. He really is perfect.

This is a romantic comedy. It’s funny (no cringe-worthy moments), it’s loveable and sweet. Mallory is a True Crime and nacho kind of girl. Cameron wants someone with character and sass. This is a great combination.

This is a slow burn romance even though it’s set over a short period of time. Mallory is hardworking and tries her hardest not to be a klutz. Her personality is fun but not over barring. I love this book! 5 out of 5.

Well what do you know?? I like this book. I seen this book around but hesitant to pick it up. When I finally giving in, it took me by surprise.

The whole story is cute. Super cute. With a lot of flirting. I think I can take a leaf or two from this book for flirting lesson. But seriously the flirting is the only one I like about this book.

There is min drama/ plot. In fact the whole story is just about the romance between Cameron and Malary. I still want more though. I want the flirting is actually building the heat between them. The book is too short to have that chemistry going.

The end is kind of abrupt. And little drama won't hurt either. Anyway, I enjoy this book OK.

Sweet and funny.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have read other stories that featured a female lead as a klutzy mess of a person. Sometimes they worked well and became a humorous feature of the story. But others didn’t work out so well and they were an unfortunate creation to try to read and enjoy.
But this one was written in such a fashion that it was funny and lighthearted throughout the entire story.
You know what it’s like to have a crush on a guy. Especially when you have to see that person every day. We get stupid. Hart captured that stupidity beautifully in this story.
The entire story was written in a no pressure way manner. It was almost a clean romance and the refreshing writing didn’t really need the overbearing pressure of hot sex to make this an enjoyable story.
Cameron was the perfect epitome of a great guy. They balanced each other out wonderfully and I love that he was a gentleman to her. I loved that she, while a klutz in many ways, was a master at handling business and people, especially his overbearing, scary mother.
With crazy family members surrounding them and bigmouth friends, (that seems to be a theme in a lot of stories lately), the secondary characters add a lot of humor and zany activity in this story.
Hilarious and so sweet too, Catastrophe Queen is a story that just makes you feel good and leaves you looking forward to so much more from Hart.
hmmm....
I usually totally dig Emma Hart's sense of humor and I have a blast while indulging in it.
I usually have a sweet tooth with her romantic comedies, BUT here, somehow, i felt off.
The situation of humorous affect left me with non... :/ so, i guess, it's purely my bad.
Wrong timing?! I wish I could tell you more...
The pacing also felt off, it was too slow and the angst was no where to be found, and not in the true sense of the word, since this is a romantic comedy, there should be no angst, to begin with BUT I needed a little bit of turmoil, just a hint...
*sigh*
but nevertheless, I m sure there are plenty of you out there that will adore this story about a klutz from a quirky family who happens to stumble upon a new job and a misfortune of having a hawt boss to whom she's attracted to.
We all know someone who is terribly clumsy and if something ridiculous is going to happen, it will happen to them. That person might even be you! Mallory is that girl. She regularly spills drinks, food, trips over or bumps into things. It’s like she is a magnet to catastrophe.
On the day of a very important job interview she is nearly run over, silver lining in that sitch is that the man who helped her was hot af. There has to be some perks to being Mallory right?
‘So I did the only thing any self-respecting, twenty-five-year-old woman who’d just almost been run over, tripped, and dropped her dirty panties could do. I ran. But only like two blocks because I was in heels, and I had the fitness level of a hippo.’
Mallory is at an all time life low having lost her job, her apartment and is now living with her parents who have no concept of the word boundaries when it comes to their sex life. As if her life isn’t crazy enough.
Lady luck is shining down on Mallory for now though and she is thrilled to be offered the job she desperately needed. She is now a PA for Cameron Reid, a real estate agent for the wealthy. How hard can it be right? Making coffee and answering the phone all day. Turns out her new boss is the hot af man who nearly ran her over and helped her that day. The man she has been day dreaming about. Of course it had to be him.
‘I wanted to check him out like a library book. His dark hair, his hot stubble, his perfect lips, his beautiful blue eyes…’
Cameron definitely notices how attractive his new assistant is but keeping a professional distance shouldn’t be a problem. He even gets used to her ability to bring catastrophe everywhere she goes and gives her a cute nickname. He finds it endearing and just part of her quirky personality. In fact there are many things he likes about Mallory.
As their professional relationship develops, their friendship does too. The attraction between them is simmering away and it was a slow burning element to this story. It took a long time but it felt very natural when things between them changed. There were so many laugh out loud moments and I loved the banter between these two.
A fun, light, romantic read.
Emma Hart is definitely one of the reigning queens of ROM-COM and this office romance was another hilarious and sexy book that was so much fun to read.
Cameron and Mallory have the craziest first encounter and the laughs start from the the get go! FLAMINGO PANTIES! That's all I'm saying and why do I not find it weird that a grown woman in her twenties has a pair of these?! In fact it made me love her right away. This heroine is a bit awkward, a bit of a klutz and totally loveable. She is aptly nicknamed Hurricane Mallory by Cameron who just happens to end up being her new boss.
The chemistry between these two is fantastic and the anticipation is enhanced by the slightly taboo nature of employer/employee relationships. I think this was definitely sexy but in regards to actual steamy scenes, it is quite light.
The secondary characters in this book are superb! Mallory's sex craved parents, obnoxiously rude grandfather and her highly inappropriate medling grand aunt really raise the comedic factor another notch.
If you are looking for a hilarious, fun romantic comedy that's low on the angst, then pick this one up. Get ready for some great laughs ahead!
***5 ‘Hurricane’ Stars***
Such sweet, catastrophe filled, slow burn goodness, with a good dose of snark added into the mix, of course. This book had it all for me from start to finish and I really wish there was no “The End” in the end.
Mallory is a walking catastrophe waiting to happen. No lie. This woman just falls into these situations on the daily, but, regardless of her klutziness she is sassy, snarky and somehow turns all of that into a charming woman with a good heart. Cameron is a really good man. Sweet, compassionate, not klutzy, charming and intelligent and has just enough alpha in him that makes him all kinds of smexy.
Cameron and Mallory’s journey was all kinds of fun. From the not so sweet meet cute to them getting their HEA, it was truly sweet, slow burning goodness ~ and when I say slow burn, I mean slow burn. The attraction is instantaneous, but I like how they didn’t immediately cross the employer/employee line and instead built a solid relationship around it. Now, this one is sweet, but the chemistry between them is always simmering beneath the surface and that coupled with the fact that they truly like who the other had me rooting for them from start to finish.
Catastrophe Queen is a fun character driven read. This angst is low and snark is on point throughout. As for the supporting cast of characters, I loved them all! Mallory and Cameron’s family are unique and definitely made this read even more enjoyable for me. And then there is Jade...I’m crossing my toes that we’ll be getting more of her at some point because she was awesome!
Can we just take a moment and bask in the greatness that is Emma Hart when it comes to romantic comedy?! She’s the only writer that can create a disaster of a heroine and make me fall in love with her instantly! Mallory Harper is a freaking hot mess and yet, I want to become her very best friend! She is ALL OF US at one point in our lives and it’s just refreshing to have a beautifully quirky character like her, achieve a happily ever after like this one. I usually fawn all over the hero in romance books, but when it comes to Emma Hart's rom-coms, the heroine steals the show every single time! Hilarious and charming, Mallory and Cameron will steal your heart from the very start!
I'd like to apply for the position of editor or pre-reader for Emma. I absolutely love her stories, but there are SO. MANY. ERRORS. This has been a problem for me in multiple books.
This would have been a five star read for me had it not been for all the editing issues. A hot boss that ISN'T an alpha jerk? Sign me up. A hot mess that rolls with it instead of wallowing in her misfortune? Here for it. All that AMAZING dialogue and great secondary characters (lookin' at you, Aunt Grace)? MORE MORE MORE. But repeating words, added words, COMPLETELY WRONG WORDS ("I removed his bagel from the fridge and stared at me.") just absolutely killed the story for me.
What's with the blurb for this book?
Like, I can understand, barely, but I do get it, censoring the word crap, but censoring the *words* sex and porn, like what the hell? Seriously, it's totally off-putting.
Were I not a fan of Emma Hart, I'd totally skip this book just because the blurb is so moronic.
Sweet and lighthearted but missing any substance
This book was cute and sweet and funny but that's really all it was. If your looking for a quick read with zero angst or drama or literally any kinda of antagonist then this is for you. I really enjoyed it at first but as soon as it felt like the ball was really rolling it literally just ended. And there were quite a few editing errors, that's usually not a problem for me but this book had them all over the place. To the point where some sentences barely even made sense. I'm usually a fan or emma hart and this book had a really great quirky lighthearted feel, but for me it just totally missed the mark.
Omg, this was adorable. How did I go on with my life and not know this existed?
Catastrophe Queen made me laugh so freaking hard. I loved everything about this book because the characters just made it super fun to listen to. Not going to lie, I loved my ship in this because I just knew that things were going to work out for them.
The romance and chemistry was alive for Cameron and Mallory. She is a walking disaster but definitely makes things fun for him. He's her boss that ends up falling for her. They were adorable through and through.
Kind of pumped to dive into all of the books written by Emma now.
4 Hurricane stars!!
Catastrophe Queen is a hilarious read with a snarky and accident-prone heroine and a gorgeous hero. This book was very well written and I loved the light hearted banter.
Mallory (25) has been unfortunate since the day she was born, she trips on flat surfaces and if it’s a hot drink, never ask her to bring it to you. She is simply a klutz.
After a potential job interview, she was distracted which resulted in her toppling backwards and spilling her coffee everywhere. Thus ensued the most embarrassing moment of her life in front of the hottest guy. Cameron Ried (28), her new boss, is said hot guy which makes things a whole lot of fun with our klutzy heroine..
”I’m either a hot mess, a walking disaster, or a catastrophe queen.”
Although it’s a great office romcom, personally I would have liked more drama/angst. More of a push and pull. That’s my preference though. This book is quite a slow burn (only kiss at like 71%). I would have liked to see more of them as a couple. But this was a clean short read.
The heroine was so relatable and funny... her inner monologue was a treat to read. I loved the side characters as well, the grandpa and aunty Grace really made the book hilarious with their witty side remarks. Overall this book was a fantastic read and I applaud the author for her original humor.
”Aunt Grace. You know I’m at work?”
“Did I call your work phone?”
“Yes.”
“Then I know you’re at work, child.”
Gah, I do enjoy an Emma Hart book. They’re always fun and exciting.
As soon as I seen the description for Catastrophe Queen I knew I had to read it. It’s has some of my favourite things in it. An office romance, a clumsy, funny woman and a handsome, caring business man. I knew it was going to be a winner for me.
The opening wasn’t a good start for poor clumsy Mallory, what starts off with embarrassing quickly turns in to more embarrassment and you just can’t help but feel for this woman and her mishaps
Cameron oh my god this man is the perfect kind of man. A man that seems unreal in the real world, that kind of man you fall in love with instantly. After witnessing Mallory’s first embarrassing moment he’s quite surprised to find out she’s his new assistant.
What could possibly go wrong for Mallory in a work placement? Oh dear, you’re gonna have to read to find out and let me tell you, there will be a lot of laughs included. This book is packed with humour.
Emma did an amazing job bringing these characters to life. I loved them both, they’re amazing. I can’t wait to see what this author brings to us in the future.
Catastrophe Queen is a quirky and sweet office romance with a nice slow burn.
Emma plays this story out perfectly. Nothing is too rushed, but you can sense the mutual attraction between the two. I love how their relationship develops over time and things aren't rushed.
I really enjoyed reading about Mallory's mishaps and her clumsy tendencies but what I loved most was Cameron and his family. Emma paints them in a sweet light and it just makes them all the more enjoyable to read. And Mallory's family is a hoot; as much as they bicker, they were very entertaining.
Overall, this whole book was extremely enjoyable to read. I love the characters, the plot line and the overall vibe of this book.
I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves a great romance!!
Cute read!
This is such a cute and funny read. Poor Mallory was destruction just waiting to happen. Honestly I'm not sure how this woman is still living after everything that happens to her. Haha! I love that Cam is such a fun loving boss. The ending seemed kind of rushed but all in all its a good read.
There isn't an Emma Hart book that doesn't make me question my sanity since I always end up LOL in public. Every. Single. Time.
Her latest release is everything you may expect it to be. It's hilarious with an adorable mess of a heroine and a charming book bf material of a hero. Prepare yourself for ridiculous situations, a lot of chuckling and some swooning. It's the perfect light-hearted read, I literally devoured it in just a few hours.
Originally I intended to give 4 round-up stars for this one as I've enjoyed it A LOT but then I remembered all the spelling/grammatical errors that should've been edited out. It really takes me out of the story, especially if it's something such as a difference between 'quiet' and 'quite' that makes me go over a sentence a few times, thinking "did I read that right????"
Anyway, story-wise this has been cute and funny and I loved the build-up between the two before they got together.
This has for sure got onto my list of favourites from Emma Hart.
I laughed, a lot, while reading this book. And, while this was definitely a story about the relationship with Mallory and Cameron, can we all just chat about her family for a second? No spoilers here, but really, hilarious is the only word that comes to mind for her family...or nuts. That one works too.
This was more of a slow burn than I was expecting. But, not in a bad way and there was a lot of time spent with the developing friendship, which made the relationship work well once they decided to go from boss and assistant to dating.
Emma Hart's characters are always quirky, but still manage to feel like real people. This was no exception. I also love that, in her books, the quirky one is adored by the one who is a little more "normal" without the other wanting to change them. It makes it feel like this is a story about 2 people who were meant to be.
I enjoyed and recommend this title.
Emma Hart has hit it out of the park once again with the hilarious, playful Catastrophe Queen! This heartwarming story of Mallory and her new boss, Cameron, was really cute! Their story was unique, charming, FULL of flirty banter and a slow burn that was truly enjoyable! Add in the fantastic family dynamic and you have a story that was I was just not able to put down! Each one of Emma’s books just leaves me with such a warm, happy feeling and Catastrophe Queen was no different! Truly an enjoyable book and a must read for any Emma Hart fan!
Catastrophe Queen was a sweet and funny romance with great characters that I really enjoyed. Emma Hart is a versatile author and I'm a fan of her books, especially her rom coms. Mallory and Cameron were absolutely perfect together, and their slow burn romance was both well-written and well executed.
Both the main characters and the supporting ones really made this story. Cameron was such an amazing guy, he was sweet and respectful, had a great sense of humor, and I absolutely loved the way he handled "Hurricane Mallory". Mallory was quite literally a walking disaster and her clumsy moments were hilarious, as was Cameron's reactions to them. She was so quirky and real, and her awkwardness made her so lovable. I loved the banter between her and Cameron, and I felt like the way the author developed their relationship was really well done. The other characters added another great layer to the story as well. Mallory's family had me laughing out loud so many times, and I loved the scenes where they were all gathered together. I loved Cameron's mother, and was so glad that Hart decided to make her so likable and not a clichéd snobby mother who tries to warn the heroine away.
The plot of the story flowed well and was entertaining from start to finish. I really love how there was no unnecessary drama, no childish behavior from either characters, and no drawn out separations or misunderstandings. Its really refreshing to read stories that lack these tropes and that is why Hart is a favorite author of mine. I'm really looking forward to reading what she has planned next.
Catastrophe queen was so cute and quirky. With so many laugh out loud moments I am sure the guy next to me was getting a little nervous on our flight. But oh well I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was the perfect story to keep me hooked.
Mallory was such a real character, even with all her clumsiness she was so the girl next door for me. She just seemed so authentic. I mean sure she tripped over air a few times but who hasn't?
Cameron wasn't too bad himself. I mean the fact that he found her clumsiness endearing and he just went with the flow so easily, made him pretty easy to like. The towel scene didn't hurt any either.
And I absolutely loved their meeting. I could almost feel the heat of her blush through my kindle. Then you throw in a whole host of secondary characters with as much personality as this lot had and it just adds to the overall fun feel of the whole book. And the complete lack of drama was the cherry on top.
I really recommend this book if your looking for a light hearted, feel good romance that will leave you swooning and giggling.
This was a nice and fluffy fun read from Emma Hart. I'm not always sure how I feel about office romance, but this was done nicely. I really liked the banter between the two main characters, and they easily fell into a comfortable rhythm with each other.
There is angst or drama, this is just a really nice and easy read, and lots of fun. Some interesting secondary characters as well. Emma Hart has a way of writing books that are a breeze to read and leave you wanting to know the characters from the pages.
