The Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Management
The Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Management is a series of eight half-day sessions beginning at 9:00 am and concluding at Noon. This series focuses on the essential best practices for nonprofit organizations. Each session will be held in the Missouri State University Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center on the 3rd floor, Suite 314. Parking is available on the third level of the Alumni Center parking garage.

Session 1: Introduction to Nonprofit Management

Participants will learn vital skills in the area of nonprofit leadership through the exploration of best practices. Attendees will also define the nonprofit sector and discuss management practices based on the monograph “Good to Great and the Social Sectors” by author Jim Collins.
Session 2: Board Development

Participants will explore board development and volunteer management, to include, recruitment and retention, working with a nonprofit board, board composition, volunteer management, volunteer performance appraisals, volunteer recognition & commendation and setting limits with volunteers
Session 3: Strategic Planning, Program Planning and Evaluation for Nonprofit Organizations

Participants will explore strategic planning through the discussion of strategic planning best practices and implementation of plans. Participants will also learn the basics of drafting a strategic plan for their organization.
Session 4: Accounting and Financial Management for Nonprofit Organizations
January 18, 2023 • Missouri State University Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center
Participants will establish financial best practices for nonprofits, to include, taxes & audits, 990's, financial decision making and budgets and allocations
Session 5: Legal Literacy for Nonprofit Organizations
February 15, 2023• Missouri State University Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center
Participants will explore legal issues directly related to the management of nonprofit organizations, to include, rules of incorporation, relevant filings and registrations: local, state & federal, legal issues related to nonprofit governance, written agreements and lobbying.
Session 6: Introduction to Fundraising

Participants will explore an overview of fundraising best practices, to include, Foundation Center resources, working with foundations, grant writing, involving key stakeholders, accountability and reporting and entrepreneurial fundraising.
Session 7: Capital Campaigns/Special Events
April 19, 2023 • Missouri State University Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center
Participants will explore how to run capital campaigns and specials events.
Session 8: Outreach and Marketing for Nonprofits
May 17, 2023 • Missouri State University Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center
Participants will explore marketing best practices, to include, defining your message, defining your target market, building a brand, what not to do, working the web and establishing relationships with the media.
Session 9: Engaging Diverse Populations and Building Social Media Audience
June 21, 2023 • Missouri State University Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center
Participants will explore how to build a social media audience and how to engage diverse populations.
