Sinclair Sisters #2

Can't Stop the Feeling

Rate this book
The local branch of the Scottish Women’s Institute want to use Kintyre Mansion to hold their annual fundraising ball. There’s only one problem—its owner.

Duncan Stewart is a young widower, still reeling from grief two years after losing his wife, and making the town suffer while he does it. The artist doesn’t paint anymore—he’s become a bad-tempered recluse. The only person he can tolerate for any length of time is his housekeeper—whom he feels overly protective toward, in a professional sort of way…mostly. It seems his grief is coming to an end, and the only woman who interests him in the slightest is the one who’s off limits. The one who works for him. And, the one who’s very much up to something…

Donna Sinclair, the mansion’s housekeeper, is well known for her three weaknesses: being a sucker for a good sob story, an injured animal and a lost soul. And there are days when her boss is all three—and it makes him a little cranky. Which is why she hasn’t told him that she’s given the Women’s Institute permission to hold their fundraising ball at the mansion. Now all she needs to do is get him out of the building for the weekend of the party. There’s only one problem with her plan—Duncan is practically a hermit and has barely set foot out of the mansion since his wife died.

But Donna has a secret weapon on her side—her crazy sisters who would do just about anything to help her out!

Janet grew up in Scotland but now lives in New Zealand. Among other things, she’s been an artist, a teacher, a security guard at a castle, a magazine editor, and a cleaner in a drop in center for drug addicts (NOT the best job!). When she isn’t living in her head and writing about the people she finds there, she raises two kids, one husband, and several random animals. She survives on chocolate and caffeine.

Nothing screams romance than a pathetic doormat heroine who pines for the hero for two years, lets everyone walk over her and is basically a second-choice to dead spouse (the hero even says he likes how the heroine needs him and how his ex was basically kick-ass, independent and wild in bed unlike the heroine who is basically shy there.........how ROMANTIC not). I didn't find the book humorous at all but basically wanted to shove the heroine who allowed everyone to manipulate her. The ex-gardner basically shouted her truth at her, luckily for her the hero was looking for a pet project and she was it.

Can't Stop Loving This!

I'm already a huge fan of Janet's books and I have been going insane waiting for this book to be released. Thankfully nobody committed me as I would have been devastated to have missed out on this book. I laughed, I cried, I kept thinking how I didn't want this book to end because that would mean I would have to wait for another new book by the lovely and incredibly talented Ms. Henderson to come out but most of all I just really thought this was a truly fantastic, amazinf, wonderful (insert any good word you can think of) read. If you haven't read a book by Janet Elizabeth Henderson, I'm not sure what you're waiting on, her books are hilariously funny and really, I mean REALLY good. If you are trying to decide if this book is worth the money, IT IS!!! Get to buying and reading you won't be sorry you did.

Heroine with zero backbone. Not the worst dead spouse trope, but it wasn't good either.

Also, what was the purpose of the heroine's imaginary friends? The heroine was 28. I thought it was going to be revealed that she was sick, but apparently not. Because of this, I just found that storyline to be juvenile.

I really liked this romance between Duncan, an artist who had deeply loved, then lost his wife, and Donna, the Sinclair sister who is the softest of soft touches, who can't say no to anyone or anything. Duncan hired Donna as his housekeeper while in the depths of total despair and grief and she's stuck with him through thick and thin. Finally, when he starts to come out the black fog, there she is, her steady presence both soothing him as well as finally inspiring him to paint again after a long absence. As these two stumble their way into a relationship, the reader can't help but root for them both.

I loved that the author didn't have Duncan magically shake off his grief, and also that Donna is very clearly distinguished from Duncan's first wife so that it's clear and believable that he does fall in love with her for herself, not as some kind of substitute. The book's tone was sometimes comic and bawdy, other times bittersweet. I've enjoyed all of the Sinclair sisters' stories and I'm glad I read this one last as it's a good way to end the series.

Some steam, grief/sorrow

Range of emotions on this one - hilarity (LOL) to sorrow/grief to joy to love...

This story is Donna Sinclair and Duncan Stewart. We've had bits and bites of the Sinclair sisters saying that Donna is the pushover. And yes, Donna is so nice, she can't seem to say No, which gets her into trouble with the townspeople, mostly the "old ladies" who call themselves the Scottish Women's Institute. They con Donna into allowing them to use her boss's mansion for a fundraiser - without his knowledge! Since it's a Rom-Com, we know where we'll end up, which is reassuring.

Something that captivated me is Donna's love of literature - to the point where she draws characters in her books AND it's their voices that she hears as her Inner Voice. I related to Duncan's POV - his struggle with grief and still trying to get on with his life... feeling so much as "undone", yet still trying to honor his late wife.

Romantic Comedy - A Must Read

I'm not going to give a narrative of the book like most reviews. I rarely right reviews even though I enjoy a book. This one however is different. I had long awaited for Donna and Duncan's story and I was not disappointed. I absolutely loved the whole story. The author took a sensitive story line of a romance involving the main character that lost his wife and loved her deeply to finding love again. She was amazing in telling the story so the reader could understand and accept how he moves on. This is one you do not want to pass by and you won't put down. Sure there is sadness but Donna is a character I can relate to and she deserved her HEA. There was high jinx and humor throughout and there were parts that made me laugh out loud. This is one of the few books that I will pull out and read again and again!

I wanted to like this book. I really did. The characters are great and the writing is really enjoyable. It’s a well written book BUT - and this the same problem as the first book and it’s a big one.
The whole plot drama could be easily resolved by the characters having on simple and not really that intense or dramatic conversation! Just talk! It was almost insane and bizarre watching Donna bend over backwards to avoid clarifying what was happening.
I actually liked the first book more because at least I could believe the nerds were choosing to ignore reality.

This was just frustrating.

So while it’s a well written book the basic twist of this series (easily avoided misunderstandings) is just too frustrating for me.

Like the first book in the series, this could also be titled: "Can't Put Me Down" - or... "Can't Wait for the Next Book".

I simply love the stories about the Sinclair sisters, and while Donna and Duncan's story touches on more serious issues, there's still Janet Elizabeth Henderson's trademark humour and enough Scottish small-town shenanigans to make this a worthy successor to "Can't Tie Me Down".
I loved the description of Duncan's return to teach at the Mac, and it's because of details like this that I adore her stories so much.

Donna is known as a pushover and the witches of the Women's Institute take advantage to use the mansion for a charity ball. But how is she going keep Duncan in the dark? He's still recovering from the death of his wife and Donna 'knows' she can't compare to her, but her big heart can't stop caring for him.
The characterization of the 'social media consultant' is biting.
I would have liked to read more of how they dealt with the fallout of the ball, but the epilogue was a satisfying conclusion.

Can’t Stop Love

IN LOVE with this book! I know whenever JEH has a book out it’s going to be a beautiful experience. It’s great to read more about the Sinclair sisters and their adventures.
I couldn’t wait for Donna and Duncan’s book and it definitely lived up to my expectations. This book broke my heart and put it back together again. To JEH please don’t ever stop writing romance that makes me laugh out loud and cry at the same time. Can’t wait for the next book!

The build-up of romance and the shenanigans and scheming within the story has you turning page after page as you simply CANNOT put this book down. Loved every minute and every page!!!

Can't stop the laughter

As usual Janet Elizabeth Henderson did it again, the Sinclair Sisters are all a mess, but Donna is a huge push over...She's basically forced to take a job for Duncan Stewart, the meanest man in Kintyre, the sparks fly between he and Donna and hilarity ensues.

Can't but love this book

From the start, I had a soft spot for Duncan and I just loved the way Donna handled him. Watching the growth of these two and their developing love was sublime. Top all that off with Janet's superb sence of humor and this book is just magic.

Another great book. Donna is the nicest of the Sinclair sisters, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Duncan is... well... a hot mess. A sexy hot mess. But definitely a hot mess. The journey they have in this book is appealing, and it happens very naturally.

good light hearted romance

this is a good little romance. a lot lo lying blackmail and indecision . the “ he loves-he loves not” which went on throughout most of the book spoilt it a bit for me but on the whole a good read

It was a long drawn out courtship!
It went through many wonderful stages and emotions! Donna’s hidden skill of drawing and her having conversations with her book characters was a fun touch! Fun read!

I love the Scottish themes of Janet Elizabeth Henderson books, but always too much sex. This book also has a main character that was either sweet or weak. Depending on your values she may be a stumbling block to your enjoyment.
