James Franco Won A Critics’ Choice Award But Wasn’t There To Collect It
James Franco is really in a pickle at the moment. It’s awards season, and he’s winning trophies for his role in The Disaster Artist. James was nominated for Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy at the Critics’ Choice Award, which was held yesterday in Santa Monica. On the same day, five women publicly came forward with sexual misconduct accusations against him. So what’s an alleged creep to do? James decided to bail on the Critics’ Choice Awards.
James won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy, but he wasn’t there to accept his award. The category was announced by Vice Principals’ Walton Goggins, who explained: “James couldn’t be here so we accept this on his behalf.” Walton is much classier and not nearly as tacky as I am, because I would have added a wink on the end followed by, “But like, we all know why he couldn’t be here, right?”
According to TMZ, he almost made it to the ceremony, too. Sources tell them that James flew to Los Angeles to attend the CCAs, but stayed home at the last minute. The sources add that James is in a “bad place” at the moment, and that he’s “upset and frustrated” over the allegations, which he maintains are not true. But a source that spoke to People makes it sound like James never had any plans of going.
“He’s in a really bad place, so bad that he changed his phone number. His close friends are trying to be there for him but it’s been hard – he’s only talking to a select group of people. For now, he’s just hiding out.”
The Critics’ Choice Awards aren’t the only obstacle James has to tackle before he gets to the final boss of awards season, aka The Oscars. He still has the SAG Awards (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role), and the Independent Spirit Awards (Best Male Lead) to get through. Looks like he’s got two conundrums to deal with here. To show up or to continue to hide out. I suppose he could always send his BFF for awards season Tommy Wiseau up there in his place, although that could just end up making things worse. “It is not true, it’s bullshit (whips award on the ground) he did noooooot!”
But the show wasn’t all about James Franco. The show was hosted by Olivia Munn (the CCA gave previous two-time host T.J. Miller a break because…well because he’s T.J. Miller). Here are some of last night’s other winners of Critics’ Choice Awards (the full list is here):
