Hi everyone, Happy New Year!  A very warm welcome to new subscribers. As you may know, A Tidy Mind is a professional organising service for the home and the head. I mix life coaching and counselling with decluttering and organising of homes and workspaces.  I think it's possible to tidy your home and tidy your mind at the same time.

There's a theme and a focus to these emails. This time it's about:

PLANNING

Plan to let go of the superfluous in 2018. Click here to read about New Year Subtractions

You know those people who say the best nights out are the spontaneous ones? That planned events tend to be let downs and you should just fly by the seat of your pants and see what happens? Well I wholeheartedly disagree with them!

For me, planning is everything. Far from being boring and contrived, I believe the more you plan, the better the eventuality. And if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

But how do you plan most effectively? Read on for planning tools and tips...
Planning Systems

We're all different but I swear by certain types of planning to organise my life and I'd be lost without them. Here is the full list:
  • Daily, monthly and annual plans. I find these are best done on paper so that they can be pinned to a wall or noticeboard and be a visual reminder. They don't have to be detailed no - just a rough plan of how I'm planning to use the time I have available keeps me on the right track.

  • A diary - it will always be a paper one for me as get more than enough screen time as it is.

  • A brain dump space. I keep this electronically since it has grown so extensive (I use OneNote) It's a way to record ideas, recipes, lists or anything else needed for future reference.

  • A things to do list (or 'will-do' list).

  • A project management tool in the form of an app such as Asana or Trello. They allow you to set short and long term goals with a due date and you can detail the steps you have to take to get there.
World, meet Ponderlilly.

I rarely recommend products but this is special. The ponderlilly planner allows me to combine a dairy, daily plan/monthly plan into one. But it was the ethos of the brand that did it for me. Here is an example of their words straight from the website:

"We seek to create more harmony between your full life and space for meaning: nurturing those in-between moments, cultivating positivity, and embracing new experiences. Made with eco-conscious materials and elegant lines, our signature planner is designed to prompt you to dream fearlessly, set meaningful intentions, and take bold actions. In our core collection of planners, we've created space for you to focus, do, and recharge. May how you fill these pages become how you fill your days, and may you celebrate every step of the way."

Expansion

There's another Tidy Mind in training at the moment which is great news as I'll be able to reduce the likelihood clients will have to wait for the service (always best to strike whilst the iron is hot!)

Workshops

This year I'm teaming up with someone special and we'll be delivering workshops on simplifying and streamlining your home, mind and life. Not everyone needs one to one support and these group sessions (in a supportive and beautiful environment) are going to inspire and empower!

Media

  • I was interviewed as a House Doctor for Metro this week, giving advice on storage solutions for kitchens, garages, wardrobes and more.

  • I can give decluttering tips until they come out of my ears but something I've always felt less comfortable with is sharing the 'real' me. But recently I decided I wanted to ensure I didn't come across as someone inauthentic with a perfecting 'tidy' home and life. So I decided to share my story about why I came into this profession and why I can empathise with my clients struggles.

At the end of December, Fearne Cotton released her new book CALM and I am happy to say I contributed to the book! I give an interview about the importance of a clutter-free home/mind when it comes to being calm (my bit starts on page 210!). Fearne's mission in writing the book was to ‘find the simple things that can inch us away from stress and over to the good stuff.’ This book is a friendly reminder that Calm is a place that exists in us all, we just have to find our way back to it.

My favourite planning quote:

"Organising is something you do before you do something. So that when you do it, it's not all mixed up"

Thank you so much for reading. Good luck with all your game plans - may your month have purpose.
