Nicola Strurgeon blasts Theresa May and Conservatives for being ‘pathetic cowards for Brexit vote U-turn – as she claims PM is ‘only trying to save her neck’

The First Minister savaged Theresa May and her party over an act of  'pathetic cowardice' after the Tories decided to call off the crunch Commons vote

THERESA May’s government were branded cowards last night for calling off today’s crunch Brexit deal vote in the face of a crushing defeat.

The UK’s EU exit was plunged into chaos after the Prime Minister postponed the showdown.

Nicola Sturgeon said the 11th hour delay smacked of “pathetic cowardice” on a “day of utter humiliation”.

And as Mrs May faced fresh calls to quit amid a Tory mass rebellion, she admitted she risked defeat “by a significant margin” if the vote went ahead.

Mrs May told MPs she would instead go back to Brussels to begin renegotiating and seek to win fresh “assurances” over the controversial Irish border issue.

When pressed on a date for a new Commons vote on a Brexit deal she admitted it may not happen until January 21 — a six-week delay.

Ms Sturgeon claimed the decision had been made in “a desperate attempt to save the Prime Minister’s job”. The First Minister added: “This is a watershed moment and an act of pathetic cowardice by a Tory government which has run out of road and is now collapsing into chaos.

“It is final proof that the interests of a deeply-divided Tory party matter far more to the Prime Minister than people’s jobs and living standards.

“That is an unforgiveable dereliction of responsibility and the UK Go-vernment should now get out of the way and allow others to take charge.

“It appears the vote is being delayed because of the Tory party civil war, and in a desperate attempt to save the Prime Minister’s job.”

Yesterday’s drama began with senior ministers repeatedly insisting today’s vote would go ahead as scheduled.

Then at 11.30am, No 10 summoned the Cabinet to a telephone conference call during which Mrs May revealed she was suspending it — infuriating MPs.

But announcing the vote delay yesterday, Mrs May told the packed Commons: “It is the right deal for Britain.

“I am determined to do all I can to secure the reassurances this House requires, to get this deal over the line and deliver for the British people.”

Tory Brexiteers claimed the PM was not going far enough. Jacob Rees-Mogg said “warm words” without legally binding commitments would not win their support.

And Labour said her Government was in “disarray” just 108 days before Britain is due to exit the EU on March 29.

Carolyn Fairbairn — director general of business group CBI — warned the UK was “sliding towards a national crisis” with the vote delay hiking the threat a No Deal Brexit on March 29.
