About this ebook

I thought I was human. Then my crush shows me a new world. One I must save.

It is said the Spirit Priestess will one day unite the two Kingdoms of the Maison Realm. She will one day fight alongside Wielders and unlock the five elements of power.

It wasn’t until I nearly died that I realized they were talking about me. They tell me I have the power to save the world, and yet the war raging around me seems insurmountable. I must rely on those I thought shunned me long ago: a boy who isn’t who I thought, and a new realm of warriors who have come to protect me.

The darkness is coming, and the Queen of Obscurité wants to ensure that the King of Lumière can’t get his hands on me. And to make that happen, the Queen will sacrifice anything—including me.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. I've read both Paranormal and Contemporary romances from this author, but YA was something new. In fact the only reason I read the book was because of the author. I wasn't disappointed. Lyric was a heroine that I could relate to. An 18 year old on the cusp of adulthood, feeling like she's floundering. She's going to college, but only because she doesn't have anything else to do. She doesn't know what she wants to do, but is feeling pressured by her well meaning parents. Her two best friends, Braelynn and Emory, have their futures mapped out. Then there are the weird dreams she's having. She hasn't had a good nights sleep in a while because of them. The three girls lives are turned upside down when on a hike with two of the stranger members of their community, Rhodes, who Lyric has a crush on, and his sister Rosamond. Lyric has an accident and Rosamond is captured and they enter a different realm to save her. One with with separate warring kingdoms, the lands of Earth, Fire, Water and Air. They meet new people, see new type of creatures and learn that things are not always as they seem. Lyric has a special function in this new realm and she must navigate the territories, unlock her new powers and unite the kingdoms. Of course, she is in denial, but by the end, she can't deny her role anymore. This book has ups and downs. I cheered out loud during battles, and cried at deaths. I think the end came so that the reader could step back and take a deep breath. It has drawn me in and captured my imagination. I was surprised quite often and I have to say that although I can usually pick out a plot, I totally didn't expect what happened. I'm now impatiently waiting for the next book in this series.

Elements of Five #1, debut YA book Carrie Ann Ryan's newest series might not be for everyone and as someone who doesn't typically read young adult I loved it. It didn't feel like a young adult at times I even forgot that Lyric was just eighteen and as per usual Ryan played with my emotions it seemed like I was reading one of her PNR books just without the sex. There is romance in it and I think I know where she's going to go with it but I always expect the unexpected with Ryan. But the story has grabbed my attention and now I won't be happy until I've read them all. Lyric is just your average teenager who's good at so many things but nothing she wants to do forever. She stuck trying to figure out what she wants to do for the rest of her life when a classmate and her cute older brother ask Lyric and her friends Braelynn and Emory to go hiking. But when something happens on that hike it sends Lyric's life into a tailspin of events that will forever change her life. The Maison Realm and the wielders remind me of several things from my childhood, specifically The Dark Crystal, and I loved it, it was like The Last Airbender meets The Dark Crystal and Alice in Wonderland. A once happy kingdom now divided into light and dark and one person with all the combined powers is destined to reunite the kingdom. Lyric is said to be this Spirit Priestess with the combined powers of all the elements. Whether or not Lyric actually believes she is is another matter, for now she just wants to help Rhodes get his sister back. I loved the characters in this book. Lyric is the main character and narrator so we see first hand how she reacts to everything going on around her; her feelings for Braelynn her best friend, Rhodes her crush, Emory her ex-girlfriend and all the others they meet on their journey. Lyric is very conflicted and is unsure about almost everything she's at a crossroads in her life and throw in the fact that she's some prophesied priestess that will stop a war and fix what's broken just compounds on to her insecurity and her self worth. Everyone believes in her but herself so there is quite a bit of internal struggle going on with Lyric along with fighting off bad guys. Overall, outstanding book. From the start this book pulled me in and kept me entertained the whole time. Engaging characters and descriptive narrative, I can't wait for more Carrie Ann Ryan knows how to set the hook.

This was an amazing start to this YA read. I thought the story line was expertly written, complex and very well developed. I felt that Lyric was a wonderful character. She was immensely likable and very relatable. I thought that the world building was stellar because it gave me an immersive "you are there" feel. I loved the blend of magic, prophecy, friendship, war, emotional turmoil and drama. With the battle lines between light and dark drawn and Lyric's life and reality shaken to the core, this book will snare your interest and leave you anxious for the next book in this intriguing series.
