Alabama Opens the 2018 Outdoor Season with a Pair of Victories at the UTSA Invitational

Danielle McConnell wins the women’s hammer throw and Elliott Miller wins the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Fresh off of last weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, the Alabama track & field teams opened the 2018 outdoor season on Friday at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
In limited action the first day of the two-day meet, Alabama picked up a pair of top-two finishes in the women's hammer throw and women's javelin and a first and a fifth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and men's javelin.
Junior Danielle McConnell opened the day for the Crimson Tide with a victory in the women's hammer throw, posting a mark of 192-1 (58.55m) on her second throw of the competition. Fellow junior Tianah List finished second in the women's javelin in her Alabama debut with a throw of 164-3 (50.07m), which ranks No. 8 all-time in Alabama history. List also had a later mark in the competition of 163-6 (49.85) which ranks No. 9 on the UA women's javelin list.
In the only women's running event of the day for the Tide, Freshman McKenzie Yanek (17:23.88), junior Kaitlin York (17:24:12) and senior Caroline Barlow (17:35.84) finished 2-3-4 in the women's 5,000 meters. Sophomore Elisabeth Danis finished sixth in 17:48.27. The race was the collegiate outdoor debut for Yanek.
For the Tide men, sophomore Elliott Miller won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in his collegiate debut in the event in a time of 9:53.89 and junior Will Edwards finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 177-5 (53.89m).
Alabama will begin Day 2 of the UTSA Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday with the men's pole vault, women's discus and women's high jump. Running events will get underway at 2 p.m. CT with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
