Damn you, Dean Dawson.

Now THAT, was the ending that Dean Dawson deserved! I’ve had a “special” relationship (in my mind) with Dean since I read Cheat Codes/End Game. He was such a poop head in those books. Ok to be honest in almost all of the books we see his grumpy side, but slowly, very slowly, he grew on me. And I saw how his relationship with Kara was meh, and after Fight Dirty I NEEDED his REAL happy ending. Like there was no way I could sleep at night if Dean and Kara were forever.

Haha, a tad dramotional? LUCKILY, Emily is a saint in author form, and blessed us all with Dean & Rory. If anyone is perfect for the newly divorced, jaded on love, Dean Dawson it is Rory Harris. She’s fun, she’s sassy, and she knows she deserves nothing less than to be someone’s all in love. Which is funny, because after the failure that was his marriage, Dean is more of a one night and done kind of guy. Until his one night with Rory isn’t enough.

I don’t want to spoil their whole story, so yeah. Just read it. Emily did the perfect job at giving Dean a second chance at happily ever after, and easily making me fall in love with Rory as well. We get the catch ups with the whole Dawson/Jones crew, and we get to partake in a few of those family dinners that I will miss reading about. The Dawson fam will always have a special place in my reader heart. They are that fictional family you want to be apart of! Does it really have to end? Who else can we beg her to write about? 😂

Rock bottom had me giggling like a crazy person. You know the types. The girl with the book and nobody knows why she’s laughing.

I love the Dawson family series. Dean isn’t looking for love. He’s been married and it didn’t work out. Rory has lost her job, boyfriend and home. Welcome to rock bottom. Neither are dwelling on their misfortune but both are trying to prevent past mistakes.

When Rory finds herself in Dawson territory she doesn’t realise how much this family will infiltrate into her life. Dean was supposed to be a one night stand. Fake name. Fake address. The problem is what if one night isn’t enough in more ways that one? Can Rory survive the Dawson family?

I’m a huge fan of this author and series. Highly recommended.

A bit predictable but I love Dean!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reality can sometimes bite. But I do love when authors include some reality in their stories.
Goodwin introduces us to someone who has worked so hard but yet things just don’t seem to go well. New town, new job, new place to live, Rory is hoping for the best.
But when it comes to meeting a new guy things may not be all that they seem to be.
Tory was introduced to Dean in a very unique and humorous way. The development of Dean and Rory was nicely balanced. They’re both tentative and yet highly attracted to each other and that comes across wonderfully in Goodwin’s writing.
Rock Bottom is a delicate blend of humor and spark, family and friends, love and devotion. A few parts were predictable, but overall this is a warm and comforting story with a little spice and a little angst, but a whole lot of love.
⭐️ 5 "Second Chance At Love" Stars ⭐️
The Dawson Family is one of my absolute favorite fictional family and this series could not have concluded without Dean getting his happily ever after. From the previous novels, it was clear that Kara wasn’t the woman for him and I’m so happy with the new love interest he finds in Rock Bottom. Emily Goodwin pleased me to the highest level with this delightful, sexy and amusing book!
Rory is the perfect girl for Dean! She reminded me a lot of Quinn (Dean’s sister) with her geekiness and love for cats, but at the same time she’s different. She’s always played it safe and after a bad breakup and losing her job, she accepts a position as a nurse in Eastwood. I really liked the situation that leads to this couple meeting for the first time. Right from the start, their chemistry is so intense and their flirty banter is just everything. Dean is truly charming and irresistible! He’s always been a little mysterious and I loved discovering more of him. After his divorce he’s on a wrong path, but meeting Rory is a life changer. Their sexy moments are so hot and filled with palpable feelings! For these two persons with bad experience with love, their romance is truly beautiful and slowly bloom into a powerful love, despite the fear of getting hurt again.
The bromance between Dean and Archer is once again hilarious. The fact Rory is so easily welcomed into the Dawson family was so sweet. Every single member of this clan is accepting. I adored seeing their dynamic for this last time. It was fantastic and bittersweet at the same time to say goodbye to all these memorable characters. Emily Goodwin concluded this series of standalones in a gorgeous way! I’m completely satisfied with that ending, but I’m gonna miss this world!
I always thought Dean deserved so much better than what he got and that's exactly what Emily gave him in Rock Bottom.
It hurt to see Dean so heartbroken over his failed marriage and so decided upon never again giving a relationship a try. In come Rory - a sexy, fun and easy going girl who he instantly connected with and became friends with his family. Rory was so much like Quinn and the fact that right from the start they became good friends threw Dean for a loop. Rory was definitely a toned down version of Quinn and there is so much of Emily in Rory too.
These two were pretty fun and a little bit angsty. I really enjoyed their story and journey into a real relationship. Dean had a lot to overcome and think about but when the right girl fell into his lap, he couldn't keep denying he wanted more.
Dean's second chance at love could not have been more perfect for him. I loved watching him fall in love again, this time with a decent girl. It was so good to hang out with the Dawson crew again and to see everyone and their own little families. This was an amazing ending to such an awesome series. I'm gonna miss this family.
Emily Goodwin returns to her Dawson Family series in which se pairs up newly bachelor Dean Dawson and Rory who are determined to keep their one night of fun just that: a onetime, no strings great time.
In an attempt to rebuild her life after getting fired, losing her apartment, and getting dumped by her boyfriend, Rory leaves her family and small town and takes a nursing job where she meets the irresistible yet damaged Dean Dawson. Will one night of passion and lighthearted fun be enough for them when their connection feels so much deeper?
Goodwin produces a scorching hot romance between Dean and Rory. The novel particularly finds its legs in the second half where the two fall for each other. However, if you’ve never read a Dawson’s Family novel like moi, the pure amount of family members and their loved ones can be a bit dizzying especially when they make up a significant layer of the story. I gave up trying to figure out who’s who and went along for the ride in which Goodwin provides crackling love scenes, some angsty drama and charming family fun.
Rock Bottom is book #6 of the Dawson Family series by author Emily Goodwin. It’s told from both points of view with happy ending.
Rock Bottom had me smiling so big and left me in such a feel good mood. The Dawson family is one of my favorite fictional families and the fact that Dean got his own book had me jumping for joy. I needed better for him and he most definitely deserved happiness.
Throughout every book in this series we got glimpses of Dean and his relationship. But we also got the crumbling of said relationship. Dean’s attitude changes and he starts becoming a different person, one who doesn’t believe in relationships and especially one who doesn’t believe in love anymore.
Rory has seen better days. She’s recently become jobless, boyfriend-less and penniless. An opportunity arises and she leaves the only town she’s ever called home. She hopes this new change in her life will be exactly what she needs. I loved Rory’s quirkiness and confidence. She was such a breath of fresh air. And she’s just who Dean needs in his life.
Rory and Dean were so good together. Both not dwelling on their misfortune, but both are trying to prevent past mistakes. I loved watching them get to know each other and build a relationship. Their chemistry was electrifying and their attraction was undeniable. I especially loved seeing Dean’s walls come down and him realizing his true feelings for Rory. I loved these two and couldn’t get enough.
Rock Bottom was another great addition to the Dawson Family series. I loved getting more of the other Dawson siblings and what they’ve been up to. I’m going to miss this family and hoping that somewhere down the line we’ll get a glimpse into their lives and see where they’re at.
Since his divorce, Dean has been a love em (but not really love) and leave em kinda guy. He's adamant that he'll never have another relationship, doesn't believe in love, and is not looking for serious. Kara ruined him for love. And then Rory comes along. She's sweet and fun and breaks through the thick walls he's encased his heart inside. Can Dean lower his walls and let her truly in? Or will she move on to someone who worships her, someone who will love her the way she knows she deserves?
I felt so badly for Dean reading of his backstory. But really the star of this story for me is Rory. She's smart and sweet and stands up for what she knows she deserves. Their story is sweet, sexy and a little heartbreaking. Can't wait for more of the Dawsons!
Plenty of spoilers will more likely be in this review.
https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2020...
This book was given to me as an ARC; for an honest review. Not only that, it comes out tomorrow (hence; Feb 17th)!!!!!!!
So okay! I couldn’t wait to read this book. And learn who Dean will end up with even though Rory's name was mentioned in the description. Lord knows I couldn’t stand Kara... & me and probably all of Emily Goodwin fans... 🤣🤣🤣...
When I first started this book, I was like yup that heifer done cheated on Dean before he even got to his house I knew. Ugh! Couldn’t stand her more after that, especially when she popped up randomly at his new house. Thinking she was getting him back and had the nerve to ruin things for Dean, I was glad that he went and got his woman back and ran Kara *** up out of his house while he was at it... the nerve of her try to put that pregnancy on him. In my head, I was girl you know that baby ain’t his... y’all been broken up. I was glad he told her that too.
Because in the end, Elory? I think it is her real name was the one for him... she got along with everyone in his family.. especially his sister, unlike Kara bitter self... plus both their (Dean and Rory) families were similar to each other... even had the group chat thing going on lol!!!! I was just glad that Dean stops playing games with Rory and turning away from his feeling for her, too... it took for crap pot “Kara” to pop up to tell him she wants him back. For him to realize his true feelings and admit them FINALLY ... to Rory, at least he got what he wanted, in the end, a family. Which he couldn’t get with the trash ex-wife of his... I’m js...
Oh btw;::::::: ugh I saw that Robby popped up in this book. I still wish that he had his own book and find love too. I am glad to learn that he getting himself together and getting along and being with his family again... plus maybe Hillary might be the one for him 🤣 idk!! I just want a book with him, but there’s no other Dawson!! Bleh oh well!!!
Dean Dawson! When he was first introduced, he was in a relationship and married to Kara. Well along with most of the Dawson family I was not on team Kara. Dean deserved better, he deserved more and Kara just wasn’t his person. Rock Bottom is worth the wait.
Rory is a nurse with a string of bad luck that eventually leads her to Eastwood and into the Dawson clan. I loved Rory, mostly because I could relate to her. She is quirky, she is nerdy and she isn’t afraid to admit it. She hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to relationships, she knows what she wants when it comes to them and she isn’t going to settle for anything less than that. Dean is been enjoying his bachelor lifestyle. Not looking for anything serious after his marriage. He just isn’t ready for more with anyone.
Rory and Dean have an instant connection, they both know what they have is something more than a one-night stand. However, they are both on different pages when it comes to what they want with a relationship. I loved the chemistry these two had.
Of course, there are plenty of scenes with the whole Dawson family, which I LOVED. Plus, group texts between them had me laughing out loud. I love this family. Rory’s family is just as awesome. She has three brothers who give those Dawson men a run for their money. (I’m secretly hoping that they get books in the future) Rory instantly connected with Quinn, especially since they have so much in common, and the rest of the family.
I loved every single book in this series and every single member of the Dawson family. Rock Bottom and the entire series are MUST READS!
I have been not so patiently awaiting Dean’s story but believe me it was well worth the wait. After being betrayed by love he has locked up his heart and thrown away the key. All his future interactions will be casual and emotion free and that has been working well for him until he finds out that one night with Rory is not enough.
When Rory’s life was turned upside down both personally and professionally she decides that a fresh start is in order which is how she ends up in town. She has always wanted the happy ever after but she has never found the man who wanted to give it to her so at the time spending a steamy evening with Dean and having no expectations for anything further seemed like a great idea.
Both have been hurt by love and are not ready for a relationship but sometimes fate has other ideas. This is only magnified when the rest of the Dawson family steps and are determined to set these two on the right course.
Catching up with the Dawson family is always fun. Rory and Dean’s story is filled with hot chemistry and all the feels and seeing how she related to his family reinforced that they were meant to be.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that Emily Goodwin decided to write Dean’s story! It was perfect and made me extremely happy to see him get his happily ever after. The chemistry between Dean and Rory is lovely to watch unfold throughout the book. The lust, banter, real talk and love, it’s all there. They are absolutely perfect for one another.
Rory rivals my absolute love for Quinn. Rory is nerdy, quirky, and kind. I just love her. She is the type of character I can see myself being best friends with. And Dean...it was amazing being able to see more of Dean. We get glimpses of him on the other books in the series, but here it’s all him and it’s so fun to see.
The way Dean and Rory just click is so wonderful to watch unfold. To see as they build this beautiful relationship, both having things that hold them back, only push forward and put their happiness first. To not let fear hold them back.
I love this Dawson crew so much! They just make me smile so big! It’s hard to resist their charm and I wouldn’t want to anyways. This is a series I can always go back to and love even more than the first time I read them.
New to me author
The devastation he must of felt with his ass of a wife. It broke my heart. Funny to think no one from his family liked her. I really liked this story. Dean and Rory vibed. I don’t even know if that’s the word to describe them but they are incredible together. They are so hot for each other. I adore Rory, I could see myself being friends with her. She’s has quite an uniqueness about her that Dean appreciates. I haven’t read any of the other books (which I will rectify) so I don’t know Dean’s background or his family who by the way are friggen awesome. My first read from this author and I’m happy to say not my last.
OHH I was excited to get my hot little hands on this one! I have loved the Dawson Family since book one and Rock Bottom is a perfect addition to the series! I loved Rory. I thought she was a stunning and fierce leading lady and she kept Dean on his toes. I love how their relationship came from left field and was so unexpected. Even when you hit the bottom, you can crawl back out and prove to yourself you are worth it. I giggled and I swooned. I absolutely love the flow of Goodwin’s writing and this one did not disappoint!
I am so glad Emily wrote Dean's book! It was everything I hoped it would be and I love that he finally got his HEA! I loved Rory! They were perfect for each other right out the gate! She was definitely Dean's missing puzzle piece. They may not have started off wanting a relationship but they couldn't deny the attraction and chemistry. Plus she fits in so well with his family. This was the perfect ending to the series!
Rock Bottom was a sexy, funny, and entertaining standalone contemporary romance in the Dawson Family series, and I really enjoyed Dean and Rory’s story. It hasn’t been my favorite novel from Emily Goodwin so far, but I was happy with the conclusion and am looking forward to reading this author’s small-town Silver Ridge series.
Okay, Emily Goodwin satisfied a lot of readers by giving us Dean Dawson's story! The Dawson Family series has been a lot of fun, but I really needed to know more about Dean and Kara's relationship since Kara was so unlikable throughout the other books. Luckily, Emily gave us Rock Bottom and we finally got answers about the doomed relationship.
This book was so fun! The Dawson's never disappoint. There are laughs and emotion and everything you could possibly want. Of course, Dean doesn't want another relationship after everything he's dealt with from his ex-wife. And of course, Rory decides to throw caution to the wind and try for a one-night stand. What happens after these two meeting is hilarious. I loved their journey and I absolutely love that Dean got his HEA!!!
I’m pretty sure since Cheat Codes most of the population of Emily Goodwin fans started begging for Dean Dawson to get a book of his own. It took a minute. We got all the Dawson siblings stories first, and finally last, but certainly not least we have Dean’s book. GAAHH!! Rock Bottom was everything I hoped it to be, and at the same time so much more than I could have even hoped for.
Dean Dawson is delicious, ladies. He is gorgeous, successful, funny, and loves his family more than anything. His interactions with his nieces and nephews will literally melt your heart! He seemed like he had it all. But, he’s bitter and jaded about relationships. He’s happy with no-strings hookups. That worked for him until he met Rory. She was the missing piece of his puzzle he didn’t even know he was missing and WAS NOT prepared for her!
Rory is this beautiful, sweet and sassy surgical RN. She’s down on her luck at the moment and ends up relocating to Eastwood, where our favorite family, the Dawson’s live. There are many similarities between the way Rory grew up and the Dawson family. There’s also a friend of her brother associated with how Rory ends up in Eastwood as well. Rory just wants to find a good nursing job and good man and settle down with. However, her luck has been finding men that don’t want to commit, and she will probably just end up an old lady with several cats instead.
When Rory and Dean meet it’s kismet yet this hilarious mix up of epic proportions. Fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it was hard at play. They just were inevitably supposed to meet that night. It was a hot fun no-strings attached one-nighter.
Or supposed to be. One and done! GAH, was it smokin’ but it was this crazy beautiful connection too from the first second. One that had me fist pumping in the air like HELLS YEAH!! They both deserved this, each other.
Secrets were revealed, some pondering and questioning.They were both terrified, for different reasons. I was one the edge of my seat praying they could get past it, because they really were perfect for each other. But they both would have to put trust out there when their trust had been destroyed in the past. There was no doubt undeniable chemistry between them, but it would take more than chemistry to build a relationship for these two. Will these two be able to get it together?
The entire Dawson crew is present and all up in this book and I could be happier about this. I wish I could make myself a part of their family. They are loud, hilarious, at times inappropriate at the dinner table, wrestling in the yard, but would end you if you spoke bad of their sibling. They are written like a perfect family with flaws and all. I FLOVE them!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐⭐- Holy Cow!! Dean is freakin hot y’all!! I think because of the bits we had seen of him before we didn’t know how much amazingness he was rocking but dang… I mean dang! I loved this story. It may be my favorite of the Dawson kiddos books. IDK I loved them all so much and I say that everytime, but he just deserved his so much. I loved Rory, she was sassy and sweet and the perfect one to rock his world upside down.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥- Lets just call him delectably ,delicious Dean, okay!! These scenes were hot, hot, smokin hot!! 🔥😍🔥
🌪Cliffhanger Warning- OMG! Best Ending Ever! 😍♥️😍
I know this wasn't the main plot but I still think Kara is the worst -- trying to throw herself at Dean to manipulate him into thinking she was pregnant with his child and ruining his happiness with Rory, that is without a doubt all levels of wrong. I liked the dynamic between Dean and Rory a lot, it felt more familiar.
Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
I have been “all in” with the Dawson Family since Side Hustle, the third book of Emily Goodwin’s Dawson Family series. I think it has to do with the fact that there seems to something for everyone here: enemies-to-lovers, brother’s best friend, second chance, etc. For each family member of the Dawson family, there is a guaranteed story that will melt your heart, pull at your heartstrings, and leave you on a happy ending.
Emily Goodwin’s newest book (and I believe the last one) in this series, Rock Bottom, is no different. In her acknowledgments, Goodwin noted that she almost didn’t write Dean’s story. Thankfully, her readers influenced her decision to write a story that would give us a little bit of each family member. Thank goodness, she did because Dean and Rory’s story is, by far, my favorite Dawson story.
Rock Bottom asks some important questions: what do you do when your dreams are over? How much effort should you put into your relationships? Is there something more than you ever imagined? Can a one-night stand become a relationship? In the world of romance, these seem like your standard fodder, and Rory and Dean’s story does a good job of answering those questions.
From the first book of this series, it’s clear that the Dawson Family isn’t a fan of Dean’s wife, Kara. The Dawsons are a close-knit family with weekly dinners. Everyone is involved in everyone else’s business. What happens, though, when your wife cannot connect with your family? How much effort should you put into a marriage that seems to be crumbling? Once Dean decides the answer to this, he is met with a devastating situation. Months later, Dean has given up on relationships, sinking himself into one-night stands. Unfortunately, Dean isn’t the type of guy who can one-night stand for the rest of his life. He is a relationship guy. However, it’s easier for him, so he lives a lie. Enter Rory. After a lost job, break up with her boyfriend, and need for a change, Rory leaves the city of her birth for a new start in Dean’s town. They meet at a bar and decide on one night together. Yet, they connect instantly, and neither of them can stay away from each other for long. As they struggle with their attraction and growing feelings, both of them must decide if the risk of a future is worth potential heartbreak.
One of the reasons Dean’s story is my favorite is its cohesion. In the other Dawson family books, there were moments when the story struggled along. With Dean and Rory, Goodwin crafts this seamless romance that builds as the pages turn. At no point, did I want to stop reading it, instead gobbling her words on the page. Goodwin’s ability to bring her hero and heroine together and pull them apart fluidly grows the story as the story progresses.
Their chemistry is clear from the start. It’s apparent that there is an ease to this coupling. It’s that ease that Dean fights initially while Rory complicates it with an assumed alias. I thought Dean overreacted when Rory’s real identity is revealed. Yet, Goodwin recognizes Dean’s overreaction through the words of his siblings and best friends. Therefore, Dean doesn’t hold it against Rory for long, which allows their chemistry to build instead of peter out.
As Dean and Rory grow closer, Goodwin easily constructs their relationship. When complications arise, thankfully, Goodwin doesn’t allow it to drag on for chapters. Instead, the Dawsons do what they do best: hold each other accountable and push each other to rectify the situation. I think this is the other reason I loved their Dean and Rory’s story the best. Their struggle manifested in the growth of their individual characters, but it didn’t hinder the growth of their relationship for too long.
Lastly, their happy ending is one of the sweetest. For much of the book, Dean’s walls remain intact, so it’s difficult to see the sweet man behind them. As Rory breaks them down, we see more than the broken man who uses sarcasm, $ex, and snark to protect his heart. When the walls fall, Goodwin gifts us with a sweet, compassionate man who adores and falls madly in love with Rory. Their epilogue is one of my favorites as it offers a simplistic, but deep abiding love between the two.
From its start, I couldn’t put Rock Bottom down. I am so thankful that Emily Goodwin listened to her readers and created a story of finding love after devastation. Thankfully, Dean found his true happy ending in Rory because Kara was never right for him or the Dawson Family. If you are a fan of heroes made whole through the love of a heroine, then you will love Dean and Rory in Emily Goodwin’s Rock Bottom.
What do you do when you hit rock bottom?  You either lie there and wallow in your sorrow, or pick yourself up and move on. Rory, the cute, funny and nerdy heroine decides to do the latter in Rock Bottom, the sixth book in the Dawson Family series. I love this series of standalones, and have grown quite attached to these siblings, so I was really excited to see Dean get a second chance at love. This story is sweet and touching, with a just a little bit of angst thrown in to make it interesting. I think these two might be my favorite couple in the series!
“Your heart can’t beak if it’s not in someone else’s hands.”
Rory Harris found out she was let go from her job as an operating room nurse when the hospital had to make cut backs. No notice, just informed after her shift she didn’t have a job there anymore. Rory needs Mike, her boyfriend of six months, to comfort her but instead he tells her he wants to break up because he’s not looking for a serious relationship. Wonderful! What else could go wrong? How about finding out your landlord has sold your home and you’re about to be homeless. All this in less than twenty-four hours.
“You’re not a crazy cat lady, are you?” “I crazy in general and I like animals. Does that count?”
Dean Dawson decides to leave his family get-together early, he’d gone by himself since his wife, Kara, doesn’t really seem to like or tolerate his family. They had an argument earlier, something that had been happening more frequently, and he thinks he needs to make more of an effort at home. They’ve been arguing over starting a family for some time, something he really wants, so Dean heads home to apologize and convince her he’s going to try harder. It’s obvious Kara wasn’t expecting him home so soon, she was entertaining someone when Dean arrives. In their bed, naked. Yeah, maybe he won’t apologize for anything, after all.
“The moment my eyes met Rory’s the wind didn’t echo painfully through the hole in my chest.”
Rory wants a serious relationship and, at twenty-eight, she doesn’t want to waste time with someone who isn’t ready to settle down. The last thing Dean, at thirty-four, wants is to date anyone after his painful divorce. He doesn’t even sleep with the same woman twice, he’s been burned and doesn’t believe love is in the cards for him. When Rory decides to go out on the town she meets Dean and does something she’s never done before, she goes home with him, knowing it’s a one night stand. The next day Dean invites her to breakfast, something he’s never done before either, and for the first time he seems to think maybe he could be interested in seeing her again. Until he finds out Rory isn’t who he thinks she is.
“Last night was a hookup, and someone with an out with old and in with the new mentality about love isn’t someone I want to get involved with.”
Rory and Dean find they have too many people they know in common and seem to be thrown together, whether they like it or not and soon begin to bump into each other regularly. Still, Dean’s a little skittish; he’s not ready to put himself out there again. And Rory knows he’s not looking for long term relationship.
“I want a relationship that has the potential to turn into something more. Marriage. A family. I’m not saying I want it soon, but I need you to know that is my end game.”
“It’s mine too. It’s always been my end game, and it didn’t work the first time, but it was because I wasn’t with the right person. You are the right person. My person.”
Rock Bottom is book #6 in the Dawson Family series but can also be read as a standalone. Having said that, I highly recommend you read the previous books in order to fully understand the history of the Dawsons.
I am so happy that Emily Goodwin decided to write Dean's story because I could not stand Kara. I am all for a good redemption story, but let's be honest here, when everyone in the nicest family ever has a problem with s specific individual, it is for a reason! It was time for Kara to go!
This book is told from two perspectives, Dean's and Rory's. When we were first introduced to Dean in Cheat Codes, he was engaged to Kara and then eventually married her. For those of us who have been following this series I think it was clear to us that Dean and Kara were having problems throughout the series.
Dean is nursing a broken heart and is trying to recover from the dissolution of his marriage to Kara. He has become a different version of himself, trying to have a good time while avoiding getting close to anyone in order to avoid any future heartbreak.
Rory is a nurse who has recently been let go from her job, was dumped by her boyfriend of six months, and to top it all off has to look for a new place to live, as her apartment building has been sold off by her landlord. She learns of a job prospect through her family and after she is hired, she makes the move to Indiana leaving behind all she knows.
After meeting each other at Getaway (the bar owned by Logan and Owen) Dean and Rory instantly hit it off. That encounter leads to a rather steamy night where they connect on more than the physical level and both are left wondering if one night is going to be enough for them. They both know that what they felt transcends the physical but they both have a hard time wrapping their heads around that concept for different reasons. Trouble starts to brew as we are shown that both of these characters want different things when it comes to relationships.
I loved getting to know more about Dean and his feelings and motivations. I thought Emily did a good job of showing what life looks like after a failed marriage/relationship and the way in which we potentially close off our hearts in order to avoid future heartbreak.
Rory was hilarious, quirky, nerdy and completely unafraid to be herself. It was refreshing to see a female character who knew what she wanted and wasn't willing to settle for anything less than what she wanted and felt she deserved. I loved the way she connected with the Dawson family and especially Quinn and Scarlet. She fit right in, and seeing her interactions with the Dawsons made me incredibly happy.
The banter, chemistry and passion between Rory and Dean was spot on. I could feel their connection and how each character dealt with the joy and heartbreak they endured throughout this book. I think this was the perfect way to end Dean's story and welcome Rory into the family.
The Dawson Family series will always be one of my favorites and I hope we get some spin-offs because I am not ready to let them go! Read this book. You won't regret it!
Rock Bottom I mean the title kinda speaks for itself, despite being the first Dawson sibling to settle down things didn't go as planned for poor Dean. I wondered how we would get his story considering he was already married but turns out Kara (who I never liked from Quinn's book) is not the one for Dean. Kara never fit in from the start and throughout the other books in the series we get more and more clues that they are not a good fit.
Heartbroken and completely jaded towards love in general it looks like poor Dean has decided to follow in his younger brother Owen's player ways. Until in walks Rory who is absolutely perfect and from the second I meet her I knew she would fit in so well with the Dawson family, with Dean and more importantly Quinn. Having had her own bad luck with love Rory decides to try something new but instantly finds out the no strings life isn't for her.
I have to say Dean annoyed me in the first book with his attitude until it became obvious that it was mostly Kara stirring things behind he scenes. When we saw him as uncle Dean those were the scenes that swung me and changed my opinion. Dean
I loved seeing all the Dawson family together, they are the epitome of family goals, the perfect family even with their issues their love and loyalty towards each other is so heart-warming. Quinn is once again playing matchmaker which is always hilarious but more so with Drama Queen Dean. I do wonder what she's going to do with her life now that all her brothers are taken care off.
Quinn and Archer are my favourite of the couples, their children are adorable but I do feel bad for Quinn as she gets a life unexpected surprise in Rock Bottom herself. Reading this amazing book i really connected with Rory, i felt a kinship with her and could relate to her life, she's so adorably awkward she's literally me! Rock Bottom is the perfect conclusion to the Dawson Family I will be sad to see them go.
I'm a little torn about this book. I was one of those who really hoped Dean would get his own book. In many ways this story is a fitting ending for him and for the series as a whole. So great to see the collective HEA at the end. He and Rory are a great fit. And the book is well-written, as this author's books always are.
However, I really hate the wounded man-whore trope and it didn't play any better in this book than in most others. Realistically, he lives in a small town, he would have run out of women for one-night stands a long time ago the way his past year has been described. Not to mention, as a respected businessman in town, he probably would have been a little bit more careful with his image given the size of where they live. I just didn't find that to be plausible at all. It's one thing for Owen to live that way, but I don't buy it for Dean.
And then on top of the past year of promiscuity, he picks up a one-night stand at the bar and doesn't use a condom?! Ever with her?! And it's never discussed?! No "oops, we should have used protection" by either one of them. No mention of being tested. And she's a nurse?!!!! As a health care professional who provides sexual health care - seriously?! That is beyond implausible and inappropriate and well into some alternate universe where STIs don't exist and nurses don't know they should use protection to prevent STIs. Whereas the whole man-whore thing is a common trope that I happen not to enjoy, this is a glaring omission that could have been remedied with two sentences at their initial encounter. In my view, it's inexcusable to ignore something that is so obvious and so easily addressed without affecting the plot/story at all.
Ultimately, although there are many things to like about this book, I couldn't give it 5 stars for the reasons described.
Rock Bottom is the latest book in the Dawson Family Novel Series. It looks like there are 5 other books in this series. I am sad to say I haven’t read any of the other books in this series but after reading Rock Bottom I will read the rest of this series.
Cheat Codes is Archer Jones & Quinn Dawson’s story
End Game is still Archer & Quinn Dawson’s story
Side Hustle is Scarlet Cooper & Weston Dawson’s story
Cheap Trick is Danielle Cross & Logan Dawson’s story
Fight Dirty is Charlie Wilson & Owen Dawson’s story
Emily Goodwin knows how to write a great story! All the above characters from the other books are in Rock Bottom.
In Rock Bottom, Rory gets layed off, dumped by her boyfriend and has 90 days to move out of her apartment. Dean finds his wife in bed with another man. She yells at him “It’s not what you think”, really? Both Dean & Rory are pretty much at Rock Bottom. Hence the title of the book.
Both Dean and Rory are a little gun shy. Dean doesn’t want to start a relationship and has had a few one night stands and Rory isn’t that kind of girl. She is also not wanting to waste her time. She is looking for a relationship. Will it happen meaning will she get her relationship? Of course she will, this is a romance book after-all and it does have a HEA. It’s exciting to see them pick up pieces of their life and put them back together by being together.
I felt like this book was easily read as a standalone but could it possibly have been made better by knowing who all the characters are. It’s great getting to meet all the family members from both Dean and Rory’s large families.
I loved reading Rory and Dean’s story. I give Rock Bottom 4.5 stars and look forward to read the rest of the books.
Gahhh, I have been waiting for this book since before it was even in the making! I love the Dawson family, and can't get enough! And Dean Dawson is no different.
After Dean's love life crumbles at his feet, he swears off relationships all together. Going back to his love them & leave them ways, his sister tries to interview. What is one date going to hurt? Except she cancels at the last possible moment. He then meets Rory.
Rory has hit rock bottom. Dumped by her boyfriend, lost her job, and ready to lose her apartment it is time for a change. New town, new job and her first night on the town she meets Dean. One night stands aren't Rory's style, but what is just one night?
Honestly I loved this book!
As the Dawson family books progressed and you seen little snippets of Dean- I wanted him to get his own book, and own HEA- and this book definitely doesn't disappoint! Dean is jaded towards relationships and opening up to someone again- but after his relationship imploded you can't blame him. He doesn't want to get close to anyone.
Rory's life exploded- not only did she lose her job, and is losing her apartment, her boyfriend dumped her because he didn't want anything serious- even though Rory does.
Dean and Rory meet by chance, and have a fun and steamy night neither can get out of their head. But one night stands and flings aren't Rory's style but Dean might not be ready to get into a relationship- where does that leave them?
This book was fun, and witty and sweet and adorable all rolled into one. If you are looking for a relationship that starts with a one night stand then you need to pick up this book! I loved Dean's story, and loved seeing more from the Dawson family. I cannot wait to see what Emily comes out with next! 5 Rock Bottom ⭐ 's out of 5⭐.
