Service Learning

Mount Airy City Schools strives to empower students to lead, innovate, and serve. The district's vision states that students will think critically, innovatively solve problems, and be responsible citizens and confident leaders with a passion for learning. One strategy to facilitate service throughout our schools is found in the district's strategic plan and encourages all students to complete service hours. Through school and community projects, students will have opportunities to develop not only leadership skills but a heart for service.
The 2017-2018 school year was the initial year that this idea was promoted to all grade levels.

Processes for Recording Service Hours
Projects Completed Through School
Students who complete service learning projects through school activities will not have to turn in their service hours. The teachers/sponsors leading the service learning activity will turn in student names and hours to the school's contact person. The school's contact person, listed above, will enter the students' hours into the district database.
Projects Completed Outside of School
Students who complete service learning projects through organizations outside of school will record their hours and get signatures from an adult. This adult can be the project's organizer, church pastor, parent, community leader, etc. Students may turn in these hours as they receive them or collect a series of hours and turn them into their school's contact person.
