Tatiana Riegel edits films. And the best work of her illustrious career is
on display in "I, Tonya", a kinetic, visceral and comedic experience that
thrives on its editing. Ms. Riegel is an Oscar nominee for her editing of
the film and appeared as a nominee at last week's ACE Eddie Awards, which
salutes the very best in editing. Later on Friday night she would win the
Eddie for best edited feature comedy for "I, Tonya".
Hours before then on Eddie Awards red carpet press row Tatiana Riegel stopped by
for a brief conversation about her work on Craig Gillespie's film. "When
he first called me though, and told me he has a script about Tonya Harding I
sort of deflated a bit and said, 'really?'," admitted Ms. Riegel, who has worked
with Mr. Gillespie six times.
"And then I read it. And then I was all in," Ms. Riegel added, speaking of
Steven Rogers's screenplay.
"I think it's a very emotional film and I think that's the most important thing
about it."
"I, Tonya" follows a multiple-narrator fifteen-seconds-of-fame hook. Each
of the principal characters wants to convince you of the truth of their story.
Margot Robbie stars as Ms. Harding.
The mission for Ms. Riegel when editing "I, Tonya" was fairly straightforward.
"I always tried to stay (with the emotion), then the story, and you know, keep
the energy going."
The editing process and shooting combined on "I, Tonya" was nine months.
"It was fast. But it was a small low-budget movie. We didn't have
the luxury of being able to dilly-dally. We had to get right down to
business," Ms. Riegel said.
