Eric Andrieu, Member of the European Parliament and Vice-President of the Sky and Space Intergroup, is organising with Eurospace a conference entitled “Agriculture: a new frontier for the European Space Policy" Tuesday 6 March in the European Parliament. While the potential of space technologies for the agricultural sector is today not sufficiently well-known and exploited in Europe, this conference will gather stakeholders from the space and agriculture communities to identify opportunities for synergies between both sectors, so as to best address the specific constraints of rural areas and future needs of famers. In the context of the preparation of CAP post-2020 and next EU Multiannual Financial Framework, European space programmes enable the agricultural sector to evolve toward a more precise, sustainable and cost saving agriculture, to the benefit of farmers. Space technologies indeed offer credible solutions to meet with the opportunities and challenges the agricultural sector is facing with the digitalisation of economy, the deployment of connectivity in rural areas and the emergence of big data. Space could also play a key role in monitoring and anticipating the scarcity of resources, and to ensure a sustainable management of agricultural and rural areas. Phil Hogan, EU commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, and Pierre Delsaux, Deputy Director General at DG GROW, will deliver a key note speech at this occasion. Lionel Suchet (Associate Director General, CNES), Dr. Maurice Borgeaud (Head of the Earth Observation Science, Applications, and Future Technologies Department, ESA), David Hello (General Manager and CEO, TerraNIS) and Hervé Pillaud (farmer and expert in digital farming) will also present their perspectives and visions in this respect. A cocktail will be taking place after the conference to enable both communities to continue the discussion in a more informal mode.
