COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team got off to a great start on the first night of the 2018 Big Ten Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.

After the first day of competition, the Hoosiers lead with a total of 118 points. Minnesota is in second place with 112 points, while Ohio State and Wisconsin are tied for third with 104. Purdue rounds out the top-five with 96 points.

The Hoosiers started off the night with a huge performance in the 200 medley relay, winning the Big Ten title with a time of 1:34.16. The team of Ali Rockett, Lilly King, Christine Jensen and Grace Haskett's time set the IU school, Big Ten, Big Ten meet and McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion records.

The time, which was just 0.01 seconds off the American record and 0.06 off the NCAA record, is the best time in the nation this year, a NCAA A cut and the third-best time in the history of the event. The 200 medley relay crown is the fifth in program history and the third in the last five years for the Hoosiers.

In the 800 freestyle relay, the Indiana team of Kennedy Goss, Shelby Koontz, Delaney Barnard and Maria Paula Heitmann earned the bronze medal with a NCAA A cut time of 7:02.24. The impressive mark is the eighth-best time in school history.

Goss had a terrific, 200 free leadoff leg for the Hoosiers, touching the wall in 1:44.06. Her time is a season-best and is tied for the ninth-best 200 free time in IU history.

The No. 9 Hoosiers will continue the 2018 Big Ten Championships on Thursday morning with the prelims of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 1-meter dive.
