Theresa May will today insist that she can secure a majority for a Brexit deal that “commands broad support” in Northern Ireland.

The British prime minister is on a two-day trip to Belfast, where she will meet with cross-party politicians and interest groups from across the region.

The Irish government yesterday urged her to reassure citizens in Northern Ireland about the direction of Brexit, while Brussels stepped up its opposition to attempts to reopen the deal.

Simon Coveney, the tánaiste, said the withdrawal agreement was crafted to “settle the nerves” of those worried about a return to the borders of the past.
