The Marriage Pact

Rate this book
I was sixteen when I vowed I would never marry him.

We shook on it. Pinky swore. Even put it in writing and all but signed our names in blood.

It was the one and only thing we ever agreed on.

To the world, he’s Prince Julian, Duke of Montcroix, second in line to the Chamont throne. Panty-melting accent. Royal charm. Hypnotic presence. Blindingly gorgeous. Laundry list of women all over the world who would give their first born for the chance to marry him. Most eligible bachelor in the free world …

But to me, he’s nothing more than the son of my father’s best friend—the pesky blue-eyed boy who made it his mission to annoy the ever-loving hell out of me summer after summer as our families vacationed together, our parents oblivious to our mutual disdain as they joked about our “betrothal.”

He was also my first kiss.

And my first taste of heartbreak so cataclysmic it almost broke me.

I meant it with every fiber of my soul when I swore I’d never marry him.

But on the eve of my 24th birthday, His Royal Highness has the audacity to show up at my door after years of silence and make a demand will forever change the trajectory of our lives: “We have to break our pact.”

I read the synopsis of this book, and I was so excited to read it, wanting to know more about Prince Julian and Emelie. Unfortunately, it wasn’t anything I was expecting or anticipating and I felt let down.

While the love story was one that I was getting into, there were too many dilemmas thrown in to build angst that only made me roll my eyes. The initial reason for their teen split was dubious and far-fetched to say the least. It is something that I can not see happening, ever. Even the week or two after, still being in everyone’s presence, and it’s not discovered then, is implausible.

Now eight years later, with no dialogue between them, and he fronts up to her door at 1am to ask for her hand in marriage. Ok, this still could have been a very romantic gesture as we discover they both have unfinished business and deep feelings towards each other. Sadly, more drama is tossed at them in every which way and form, and this could be life testing them, but it felt fabricated. Emelie had the patience of a saint until she didn’t. And what she couldn’t forgive was the easiest one of them all. Especially given her own reluctance to find out why Julian was different days before the wedding.

What I enjoy when reading a Royal novel is all the history and protocols that go with it. Prince Julian was trying to do the right thing by his family and country. At times I was rattled with how some typical royal customs were disregarded. There is no way a future princess / queen would reside in the same house as her future husband before the wedding. This was one of a few things that then made the story more common and not regal. The biggest thing I could not get my head around was the 180° turn the Prince had. Being so out of character from what we got at the start of the book, I wonder how long their HEA can last. Even though I wasn’t fond of this novel, it will not stop me from reading another from this author.

Julian and Emelie have a falling out when they were young. After eight years of no communication, Emilie was surprised to see Julian and asking her for a favor. Will she do it or not?

I really enjoyed this book. I expected it to be a typical, light-hearted romance, but it exceeded my expectations. This story has it all: romance, mystery, and second chances. The moment I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I'm immediately wrapped up in the characters. I have read several books by this author before, and she didn't disappoint. This was a quick and full of feel-good emotions. I recommend this book.

I will come back with a review when I can be nice about it. This was terrible. Absolutely, utterly ridiculous. Maddeningly so. I know that’s terrible to say, but this was not good.....

I DNF’d and then went back to finish. I’m not sure why I did that. I’m so flustered. I feel like I wasted my time and I hate that feeling. Ugh. 😩😩

Ugh. I wanted to have hope for this book to be good but it just isn't. It's premise is absolutely ridiculous. The main characters act like children 99% of the time. It's a story that does a lot of telling without showing as well. Like they supposedly dated that summer but we don't see any of that. The plot about the assault is insulting. Even in the dark I don't think she wouldn't have noticed slight differences between Julien and liam. Especially his cologne. Not to mention it's 8 years old, it's difficult to convict even if you report at the time it happens much less that long after and lying about who is he doesn't equate assault to me. I would feel violated obviously but trying to make it into this whole thing was so annoying to read. Then that ridiculous ex too who just happened to be involved with him as well. The way em reacts to every little thing too was outrageous. I mean he tried to fucking tell her his dad was just ill. But she was running around and wouldn't make two minutes for him yet he's all wrong. Makes no sense. Then when they do get together he abdicates the fucking throne. Why spend the entire book on this royal bullshit life only to rip it away especially for someone so petty and childish? Byeeee.

"I don't know what it is about first loves, but even the briefest ones leave their marks and the tiniest, most microscopic part of you can't un-love them, even if you can't stand them."

Young love involving complete opposites, but there's a missunderstanding... except they can't let it go...

A sweet second chance romance.

Winter Renshaw is always good for a surprising read. I’ve had books of her that sounded good when reading the blurb – but later ended up being “only” 3 stars in my rating (which is not a bad rating but still a difference to 5 stars) – and then there are these books from her – and I have had quite a few of them – that were simply 5 stars from the first chapter I read.

So when I started to read “The Marriage Pact” I really had no idea where this journey would take me. As I truly could not imagine how she would tackle the genre of “royal romance”. Well and again I was in for a surprise and in this case because of the really fresh and different approach to a well-known subject.

But let me start by saying something … I wished the author would have placed her dream cast at the beginning of the book. Because reading it as the last pages went was a real waste #sigh – I could have been dreaming of these eyes the whole book long. …. I fully agree with you Dear Author – he would be a great choice … as a child I was mesmerized by his father’s eyes the first time I saw them ( I am an “EYE” girl ) and when I saw him for the first time in an add on TV I directly knew that this guy had the same eyes and I actually googled him to find out who he was ( I know I know you are wondering who that person is … well you have to read the book) – Oh and I would put switch the position of “her” assistant with the female lead – because I really like that actress and she would be wasted on the position of the “assistant” as she could be the right sassy opposite for our male lead – gosh – sigh – this is really a dream cast …

Back to the plot – well well well – as far as predictable plots go … well let’s say if you want them – go look elsewhere because this is NOT your book. The story starts unusual – follows then the known paths for a while and ends as unexpected and unusual as it starts – so you are in for a treat if you love royal romances. The thing is – I cannot tell to much because the strength of this book is really the unexpected plotline and it wouldn’t be that anymore if I told you about it.

And you get great leading characters along the way. I loved my time with their banter and how their relationship progressed during the story. It was well developed and fresh because of the unusual turns the story took.

Suffice to say THIS was again on of the great reads by this author. I would say a 4.5 with a little extra for the unexpected plot. I can really recommend this book.

The reason they split is dubious at best. H is also extremely immature for someone who is meant to be 26 and the future king of a country. h is also very gullible and easily swayed.

"She’s both the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me— and the worst."

For the past three months, I have been reading books from new to me authors. Trying other genres from new authors. I want to expose myself to many authors. Get out out my shell and try different writing. My experiment led me to The Marriage Pact by Winter Renshaw. I never read any books by Winter Renshaw but I decided to try one of her books. Godh, the writing, story and characters truly captured me. I read The Marriage Pact in one sitting. I didn’t want to let it go. The Marriage Pact is a sweet delight. The Marriage Pact is a light touch of romance that will light your heart up.

Mesmerizing writing. Memorable characters. The Marriage Pact is sweet filler of romance for a summer read. An unexpected plot with a drama and steam. I adored the premise of The Marriage Pact. A royal romance with a second chance romance and enemies to lovers trope that grabs you. A light hearted romance that gives you a warm and heartfelt tug. However, I lost connection with the second half of the story. The writing is amazing. Pulls you in. However, a lot was happening in the story that it lost spark.

The Marriage Pact will introduce you to Prince Julian and Emelie, a sweet and sexy couple with inviting chemistry. I really liked Julian and Emelie. There is angst. There is so much emotion between them that moves your soul. There is heat laided with passion. You will definitely like Julian and Emelie.

I liked The Marriage Pact. It was an okay read for me but it introduced me to Winter Renshaw. She writes impeccably so I am definitely going to check out some of her books.

I didn’t love this as much as I wanted to.

Emelie and Julian have a complicated history, but the conflict from eight years prior just didn’t ring true for me. Other than providing a basis for their tension and love/hate relationship, that event – once revealed – seemed far too improbable to believe.

Then, the resolution to the situation that forces Julian to insist on marrying Emelie was more than contrived, rendering the entire premise of the preceding story pointless. It was a Bobby-in-the-shower-level let down, and all I could think was, “Well, is THAT all.”

While the HEA gives us a solid relationship, the sacrifice made to achieve it felt entirely out of character and made me doubt the sustainability of their love. As much as I love this author’s other books, I can’t recommend this one. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Her Perfectly Imperfect Prince

Julian needs to take over as king before his father ruins the entire country. However, tradition stipulates that to be King, you must be wed.

Julian and Emelie grew up together. Their parents were friends, so summers were spent together. What started out as two kids who tormented one another, turned into teenagers who caught feelings even though. Then their short foray into young love came to an abrupt halt.

It's been eight long years since they have seen one another, but Julian needs the favor of a lifetime and the only person he wants by his side is Emelie.

Julian is royalty and he is used to making decisions to serve himself and the greater good. He knows that getting Emelie on board with his plan will be a challenge, but failure is not an option. Julian has his own agenda.

It wouldn't be a royal family without secrets and lies. Emelie and Julian have a past. A past with hurts and feelings of betrayal. Often what we perceive is not necessarily the truth. The two will have to be willing to let go of their past or they won't have a future.

There was chemistry and love. Deceit and good intentions. The road will be rough and their Happily Ever After won't be what you expect. Enjoy this second chance love story.

My initial thought when I finished this book was “well that was dumb.” My next thought was “what a waste of my time.” This story was underdeveloped and unrealistic. We have 55 chapters of stupidity and Emelie being immature and annoying to only be given a dumb conclusion in the form of a short epilogue. Doesn’t make any sense that Julian would give up the throne for her when he loved his country and wanted to be king. It would have been so much better if they got married and returned to Chamont to be king and queen. I loved the book up until the end which is unfortunate.

Ok story. I’ll get to the point. The heroine was to Whiney for me. There was no depth to her. The only thing that she loves to do is to “think”.
The hero was ok and honestly I didn’t like the epilogue at all.

The reason why I gave it 3 stars and not 1? is bc nothing dragged and everyone got to the point of reason without losing the readers interest. Dual POV.

Ok story but not one I would reread.

This author is one I’ve come to count on for likeable characters, an engaging storyline, and lots of heartfelt emotion in her stories. When I saw she had a royal romance, I was excited to read it. I loved Julian and Emelie's characters – their chemistry was palpable and their banter made me laugh.

I liked the premise of this book: Julian needs to take over the throne due to some issues with his father, the king, and in order to do so, Julian needs to be married. I’m not sure it felt completely plausible that Emelie would give up her life to marry a man who broke her heart and she supposedly hates. And I questioned the authenticity of the way the issue was resolved with Julian's father. I didn’t like the book's resolution (again, a believability issue for me) and, unless I missed it, the bad guy never got his dues.

Yes, this is a work of fiction, and if you’re able to suspend reality to a greater degree than me, you’ll probably enjoy this book, especially if you like the royal romance trope. Otherwise, I recommend you try some of the other books by this author.

Emelie and Prince Julian have know each other since they were just kids. Their fathers were best friends and every summer they ended up together, for it was a tradition. Suddenly the summer Emelie was 16, things between them changed and became intense. But something happened and what was starting to be beautiful turned into HATE...and they never spent any time together again. Fast forward to now and Prince Julian is back needing a favor that'll change everything....
This book is a 2nd chance at love/royal romance/enemies to lovers romance read. It is emotional and in places, can be a tear-jerker. You will want to scream at the main characters, shake the main characters, hug the main characters and just ahhh at the main characters because of the feels that are coming your way. Winter Renshaw is masterful in her writing style, how she works her pen and writes stories that have readers hooked from the start and keep them glued all the way through the end. The twists and turns written will have you wondering if Emelie and Prince Julian will get their HEA. Great romance read!

This really is a love/hate relationship between Emelie and Julian! Both their families spent the summer holidays together every year. Julian use to play pranks on her, she loved him, and their parents thought they would end up together!

On their last summer together something happened, which left them both feeling betrayed by the other. They made a pact that they would never marry each other!

Eight years have past and Julian turns up and asks Emelie to marry him, he has his reasons and she has hers for agreeing through with it.

The month leading up to the wedding is both fun, romantic, and filled with truths and honesty! But things don’t always go to plan and people once again get hurt. Can they both make sacrifices, put the last behind them and move on or is it too late?

I read this and couldn't put it down. I love Julian and Emelie. Such independent and strong characters each set in their own ways. Julian and Emelie spent twelve weeks each summer with their families. But the difference was Julian's family were royalty and Emelie's were common Americans.
But both Julians and Emelies, as teenagers, believed a misunderstanding and their unstated love became anger and hate, but they continued to love the other.
Now Julian has come to request a favor of Emelia...

A great second chance at love with twists, turns, good feelings. A fairytale With emotion. Prince Julian is like a rock star. Women all over the world admire ad want to be his princess. All except Emelie. She would rather not see him again. 8 years is not long enough. But somehow she finds herself attached to him and his world. A fun a good fairytale plot that will keep you reading from page one.

Not her best

The best part of this book? The last chapter. Literally. It was as though Ms. Renshaw phoned in most of the book, only to finally settle into the creative groove. The spark that first attracted me to her writing finally lit, unfortunately doing so at the very end.

This book wasn't awful, but it wasn't great...and it was quite bland. I didn't connect to either character and while I didn't dislike either one I felt completely neutral. To me, that is worse than active dislike. All of the conflicts were thinner than wet rice paper, stuff that most people would jump to clear up straight away without blowing things out of proportion.

I believe this story was inspired by Prince Harry and Megan Markle. I'm from Scotland and really don't get the whole fascination with all things royal, so obviously I'm not into stories centered on royalty. The made-up country and monarchy, the protocols and all the ostentatiousness of a royal wedding - all of it just felt shallow to me. There wasn't anything truly inspired in this story. And then came the final chapter, which WAS inspired and damn beautiful as well, and then it was over.

Sometimes, when a writer is too focused on turning out book after book, they become stale and inconsistent. And if I had the chance, I'd advise that writer to step back a while and maybe not publish every 2 months.

I know what this writer can do, but her last few books have been an exercise in frustration. Yet I keep going back when I say I'm done. I don't like too many writers and don't give many second chances. I just really hope something changes with her next book.

Lots of misunderstandings that could easily be cleared up by communicating, lots of focus on the wealth of a monarchy, some OW drama and an incidence of non-consent.
Others will like this book just fine, I simply found it lacking something.

2.5 stars.

WOW WOW WOW... this book grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. It’s heartbreaking, emotional and so romantic with a slow burn that turns to a sizzle. I was drawn into this story of two people who found love then had it torn from them, only to be reconnected years later.

The story follows Emelie, a teacher whose life changes when her teenage flame, Julian, shows up out of the blue and asks her to marry him. Their families spent summers together, and Julian went from the boy who put frogs in her bed to the man who stole her virginity only to break her heart soon after. He also happens to be a prince in need of a wife, and she’s the only one he trusts to fill that role. But there is a fine line between love and hate, and the unresolved feelings between them have straddled that line for years. When Julian manages to convince Emelie to marry him (to benefit both her family and his country), they are forced to confront their past while also building a future.

Winter Renshaw’s writing is consistently great, always full of deep emotions and complex relationships. This book is certainly no exception - it’s written in such a way that the reader is not sure exactly what happened between them, or even Julian’s true motives for marrying Emelie. This is not a light read; they definitely have some hurdles to overcome (and yes, there are some triggers in this book so please keep that in mind). It’s packed full of emotion and contains plenty of twists along the way. I will say, the ending stumbled a bit for me, but not enough to erase how much I loved the rest of the book. Just be prepared to go through a roller coaster of emotions with this one.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

DNF - earth to author?! That is considered rape! H’s best friend pretended to be the H and slept with the h (she was 15/16); later on in the book the h finds out that she hasn’t lost her virginity to the H but instead to his best friend - when this was revealed, first thought in my head was rape! I waited for the h to be angry, to cry, to scream, shout; but you know what happened? Nothing! There was no emotion, she was not upset, she did not feel violated, she was so calm and over the whole thing. That was all I could read, because what happened with the h and the best friend was rape, and that is not okay.

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

Winter Renshaw has done it again with The Marriage Pact. This is a second chance, frenemies-to-lovers type of romance. It is the tale of two people, Prince Julian and Emelie, finding each other again after much discord and misunderstanding. It is a beautiful lesson in moving beyond pain to find an enduring lifetime of love. It is also a reminder to be one’s self each day, no matter the circumstances and expectations. These two are lovely and dreamy, even in their pain.

Prince Julian and Emelie are childhood friends, now adults. At 16, Emelie gives her virginity to Julian, only to be met with silence and disdain the day after. After a childhood of taunting, giving her virginity and love to Julian is a huge step. His rejection of her creates so much pain that she makes an oath to never marry him. The pain he inflicts on her is too much.

Eight years later, Prince Julian comes to her door asking to marry her as a way to save his kingdom. After much reticence, Emelie agrees with the agreement that she can end the marriage after five years. What Emelie doesn’t know is that Julian is interested in more. Much of their story is a misunderstanding on both sides. Will they find love, or will their marriage end when the five years has passed?

“I don’t know what it is about first loves, but even the briefest ones leave their marks and the tiniest, most microscopic part of you can’t un-love them, even if you can’t stand them.”

What Winter Renshaw does well is angst. She has this way of telling stories that infuse a bit of humor, but her true calling is making you feel. As I was reading Julian and Emelie’s story, my stomach was knitted into knots because Emelie’s pain is palpable. I kept waiting for the awful moment to happen when Julian would readily take advantage of her again. And it’s this reticent anticipation that keeps Renshaw’s story in its grasp. I began this in the late evening before going to bed, while I am on vacation, and I could not put it down. I simply had to know if Julian and Emelie could survive the lead up to their marriage. Would they make it through the hurt of the past? It’s this driving force that keeps you reading this story until the very last word.

Prince Julian and Emelie are likeable characters, even the prince. Given what we find out about his treatment of Emelie, you expect to detest him. However, Renshaw lets us into his thoughts quickly, and we realize that he has another side of this story, an important side of it. Therefore, there is never a time to dislike him. He is also simply a survivor of pain. “The mark she left on my heart that summer has never faded, and now here we are. It’s funny how things work out sometimes. And this will work out. It has to…”

Together, Julian and Emelie’s souls are interwoven into a story of love over time even in the midst of pain. It’s also about Julian learning who he is outside of his role as prince. Emelie’s love for him helps him transcend the shackles of his kingdom to find a peace in their love. The epilogue is one of my favorite parts as it illustrates the power of freedom and self-love. “I live for these moments with him, the ordinary and beautiful ones…”

If I had one criticism of the story, I’d have to note Emelie’s character. Emelie is a classic over-thinker, and it creates some of the drama of the story. I connect with her in that way, but as a reader, it had moments when it was too much for the story. For the most part, I loved her, but I also felt she found problems where they didn’t truly exist. This is also the genius of Renshaw’s character construction; she generally makes you both love and hate her main characters.

There is always something beautiful about the stories Winter Renshaw tells so well. And The Marriage Pact is no different. Its beauty comes from its painful truths, and the way in which Renshaw weaves it with the love of its two main characters. As I stated before, I could not put this book down. I finished it in the line for Westminster Abbey in my first trip to London, and the beauty of Prince Julian and Emelie’s romance colored the edges of the beauty of that place.

If there is someone Emelie Belleseau hates with a passion, it's the boy she spent every summer of her young life with..Julian. Their fathers were best friends and the families were so close, enjoying each others company during all those lazy summers together. But Emelie had to endure Julian's frogs, pranks, teasing and taunting, anything else he could do to make her life miserable until the summer they noticed each other for different reasons. Well, until he ruined her budding love for him, her dreams of a future together and broke her heart in the cruelest of ways. She's never quite gotten over it.

Eight years have come and gone now and not one word from him, no appologies..no.. Julian...gorgeous, self centered, smirky Prince of Chamont, Duke of Montcroix, has lived his life in the spotlight, never looking back on that summer that changed her outlook on love forever. The families had hoped that someday Julian and Emelie would marry and live happily ever after...ah, no. Not in any lifetime.

So when Julian arrives at her doorstep after what he did, all these years later, looking for a BIG favor, she tells him to take a hike..marriage..to HIM..what the hell!

Will she take him up on his offer? Her father's death put a strain on the family wealth, Julian's offer could make these problems disappear but the personal cost to her would be too high and very painful.

Julian has a secret agenda, Emelie has no idea what's going on in his head but as he tries to 'woo' her into this marriage of convenience, she starts to see another side to his personality that is hard to swallow..kind, thoughtful and sweet..what? It's getting so much harder to hate him now.

This story just kept getting better and better as I read along. I haven't read a royal romance in a long while and this friends to enemies saga was pretty darn addictive. I whipped through quickly, didn't want to put it down for even a minute, wanting to see how this couple could ever work past their hate, differences and all the drama running in the background. Julian had a prior long term girlfriend, a princess herself, who was not going to let some kindergarten teaching American nobody win the Prince away from her..no, no, no!

There were some secrets behind all the hate that were wild cards thrown down on the table, didn't see them coming. A few moments of insanity that I wanted to scream NOOOO to. In the end, I couldn't have predicted the epilogue, but it was perfect for this couple even if I would have liked a wee bit more. Maybe an extended epilogue a few years down the road? Write it and we will come, Winter! I know I would be there with bells on!

An advanced copy of this book was provided and happily received. This is my honest review of it.

Emilie and Julian’s fathers were best friends and their families spent their summers together growing up, but the two of them haven’t seen or spoken to each other in eight years. Not since the day he disappeared after breaking her sixteen year old heart. So why is Prince Julian, Duke of Montcroix, showing up in North Carolina at her doorstep at one in the morning asking to break the pact they made as kids all those summers ago?

“The man didn’t shatter my heart that summer, he obliterated it. It took me years to piece it back together and even then, it was never fully right after that. Never quite whole.”

Ok so Julian needs a wife asap so his Country's monarch doesn’t fall apart. He wants Emilie to agree to pack up her life in North Carolina and fly to Montcroix to become the next Queen. I mean that’s not asking much from the girl who’s heart you broke, is it? Oh, did I forget to mention Julian is super hot and can any wife he wants but only wants Emilie? Her first reaction is a hell no. Can’t really blame the girl but then Julian sweetens the pot so to speak. She's suddenly agreeing to the terms he lays out, changing her answer and finding herself on a plane headed into an unknown future.

“You’re the only one I trust. And the only one I want. And my people will adore you, just as I once did. Just as I still do.”

These two are dealing with some unresolved feelings and things are a little rough as Emilie gets accustomed to the royal lifestyle. But it becomes clear pretty quickly that they both still love each other after all these years but think they were betrayed by the other. When secrets are revealed and some drama is thrown in the mix, will there be a royal wedding or another broken heart?

“I loved her then. I love her still.”

I love the whole prince/princess falls in love with a non-royal type of book so this blurb really sucked me in and Winter Renshaw always delivers a great read. While this one was good, it wasn’t one of my favorites. I had a bit of a hard time feeling the connection between Julian and Emilie. Sometimes I just didn’t see it and I guess I wanted more drama. I love a good twist in a book but there was one during the second half that just didn’t make sense or fit and honestly sort of threw the whole book off for me a little. It was a quick read and was good but unfortunately not a favorite. I am looking forward to more books from this author in the future.

When I was reading the outline for this book, I knew I should have passed but I've really enjoyed many of this authors books in the past. But it's a very rare thing when I choose a book about an imaginary country and an imaginary king or prince or any of that kind of thing. While marrying a handsome prince may have sounded appealing when I was very young, in reality and with a number of years under my belt, I don't find it romantic at all. Look at many of the real life examples and they aren't so good. Princess Dianna had it really bad. Rumor is that Prince William has cheated on Kate, the press pillorized Sarah Ferguson and that marriage didn't last and now they are doing the same thing to Megan Markle, whom I adore by way. But once a princess one is under constant scrutiny and also very restrictive. So thanks but no thanks.

I wish I'd remembered all that when getting this book as I DNF'd it at 38%. So far there had been very few scenes between the two MC's and those that were, Emilie, our heroine is very bitter with Julian are hero and a prince. Apparently they've know each other for years as their parents were friends and he did something that broke her heart.

Another storyline I don't like at all is the "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you but now I love you" And at 38%, the author had not give a clue to their past, she almost blackmailed into marrying him and he has no redeeming qualities. So I figured I'd waited long enough and reached the point whee I didn't give a damn about either of them. It's kind of hard to keep going when you have that kind of attitude.

I'm not grading it because I didn't get far enough to feel right to give one so whether it gets better or not I really don't care. I'm out.

I have always been a fan of Winter Renshaw! The synopsis intrigued me - who doesn't want to marry a prince? With the hype surrounding Harry and Megan, I was ready for this book! Julian and Emelie have been childhood friends who spent the summers in North Carolina. Julian's family seeked normalcy which is why they enjoyed their summers outside of Chamont. When Emelie turns 16, things shift between her and Julian and they become more than friends. Before Emelie knows it, Julian leaves her with a broken heart after that one summer.

Fast forward 8 years, Julian is at Emelie's front doorstep asking for her hand in marriage. King Lionel, Julian's father, is mentally breaking down and being married would be a requirement for Julian to take his place as king. Julian has his own agenda as his friendship with Emelie was long obliterated since the last time they saw each other.

I really wanted to love this book, however, it fell short. Julian repeatedly spoke about "that person" and what had happened between him and Emelie. I suppose I expected something bigger than what actually happened. I liked Emelie's character, however, I was quite put off by Julian's agenda and motives.

Overall, this book was a quick and easy read with very little drama. Although it wasn't my favorite book by Winter Renshaw, it won't stop me from reading her books as she is an amazing storyteller!
