Northwest Syria: WHO working with partners to reach the most vulnerable

WHO has been working with various partners to reach and support the most vulnerable in Syria through the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO Gaziantep, Turkish Red Crescent and OCHA, in partnership with Al-Sham Humanitarian Foundation, Hand in Hand for Syria and Independent Doctor’s Association, delivered an 11-truck shipment of essential medicines and health kits for primary health care, trauma, surgery and noncommunicable diseases (valued at US$ 813 880.00) estimated to provide 757 200 treatments for civilians in northwest Syria.

WHO Gaziantep, Turkish Red Crescent and OCHA also delivered the first set of 25 ventilators planned for distribution among three designated COVID-19 isolation hospitals across northwest Syria.

WHO delivered a consignment of 2000 viral transport medias units, 5000 dry swabs, and 5000 PCR testing and 5000 extraction units to a laboratory in Idleb, also in the northwest of the country. 

WHO, in partnership with the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), has implemented an mental health and psychosocial support network for those seeking help for interpersonal, relationship problems, abuse and neglect, education and occupation, physical and somatic issues, as well as issues related to COVID-19 directly.

In partnership with Syria Relief and Development, WHO provided 2-week training for physicians working in primary health care centres on activating referral systems for suspected cases of tuberculosis (TB) at the TB centre in Afrin (Aleppo).
