There is a lot to be said for a player who can put the team before himself, someone who grafts regardless of the circumstances.

When Claude Makelele left Real Madrid in 2003, Zinedine Zidane famously remarked: “Why put another layer of gold on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?”
