North Korean defector brings mainstream media back to reality with truth about Kim Yo Jong

The inspirational North Korean defector whom President Donald Trump honored at the State of the Union last month has a lot to say about Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Kim has received mountains of positive coverage in the mainstream media for her visit to South Korea for the Winter Olympics. CNN compared her to Ivanka Trump while outlets like the New York Times outright bashed Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to meet with the North Korean leader — all the while praising Kim for her diplomatic dance in the South.

But not everyone is fawning over the 30-year-old Kim, especially Ji Seong Ho, who defected from North Korea in 2006.

What did he say?

While the world fawned over Kim's appearance at the Olympics, Ji attempted to bring the media back to reality with the truth about the powerful leader in an interview with the Daily Caller.

"Yo Jong’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, is a war criminal, and her father, Kim Jong Il, killed three million people by starvation. Kim Jong Un is responsible for human rights violations and assassination of his own half-brother,” Ji said.

"The Kim family is taking hostage of the North Korean people and threatening the world with its nuclear weapons,” he added. "South Korean people hate Kim Yo Jong and her visit."

Then Ji offered advice to the younger Kim.

"I personally think she should be mindful of her place, stop looking down on other people arrogantly and feel guilty,” he explained.

Ji knows all too well the reality of who Kim is when she's not on the world stage. He was personally the victim of the Kim regime — losing limbs and being imprisoned.

Still, he's fortunate. Most of Ji's family was able to defect, with the exception of his father who died in a North Korean prison. Since then, Ji has made a career from telling his inspirational story about defecting on homemade crutches.

You can read more about his story in this Times profile.

Who is Kim Yo Jong really?

Kim Yo Jung, as director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers’ Party of Korea, has been personally sanctioned by the U.S. government for being a leader in the North Korean government responsible for horrid human rights abuses.

CNN labeled Kim as her brother's most trusted adviser and said she is his "gatekeeper."
