Long Live The Kings!

Special Virtual Livestream + Panel of The Wild, this Saturday October 24th 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern

To celebrate our long friendship and shared love of salmonids, we’re teaming up with Jacques White, Executive Director of Long Live The Kings to celebrate World Fish Migration Day. Join us for a special screening of The Wild with Jacques and activists on the front lines fighting for wild salmon. We will split the proceeds with Long Live The Kings and World Fish Migration Foundation – and 25% of our net ticket sales will be donated to the coalition defending Bristol Bay. Ticket prices are on a sliding scale but money should never be a reason you can’t watch The Wild. If you can’t afford a ticket right now, you can request a confirmation code for a free ticket – no questions asked. (Thanks, Sam Harris.)

Salmon Nation Festival of What Works

You’re going to be hearing a lot more about Salmon Nation in the days ahead. I was invited to climb into this magic canoe by founders, Spencer Beebe, Chris Brookfield, Cheryl Chen and Ian Gill last year – and I am deeply grateful.

Here’s how we define it: Salmon Nation extends from Northern California to the North Slope of Alaska. It is perhaps the most creative, diverse, rich and beautiful bioregion on Earth. Here, diverse local cultures are forming growing movements toward healthy and regenerative systems. Welcome home.
Join us the week of November 15th - 22nd!
So. We’re throwing a week-long virtual Festival of What Works to showcase some of the amazing ideas, talents and practices our brothers, sisters, neighbors and cousins are generating here in this place defined by the salmon rivers it’s touched by.

During the course of the week, I’ll be hosting a livestream screening of The Wild as well as a Dam Removal Panel; For Youth! A Future in Salmon Discussion; Conversation with Portugal. The Man about their incredible activism in our bioregion - and last but really, first, a lively hour-long banter with my friend, mentor and fellow salmon nerd, the Archfishop of Salmon himself, Ray Troll!

VOTE

I don’t think it can be over-emphasized how important it is to vote in this year’s elections. The fate of Bristol Bay, other sacred wild spaces and really, the integrity of our democracy hang in the balance.

Ali Fujino is an Impact Producer on The Wild and good friend. She and Far Star Action Fund - the creation of our Executive Producers, David and Linda Cornfield - just spearheaded a campaign with the Redford Center to empower young people to create 10 short videos dedicated to why we vote. Please watch and share widely.

And, I’d like to extend my sincere condolences to the Redford Family with the news of the recent passing of Jamie Redford last week. Thank you, Jamie, for your hard work and inspiration that will live on in your films and activism.

The Pebble Tapes

If you’ve been following the news about Bristol Bay, you probably heard about the so-called Pebble Tapes. These were recordings made by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) catching Pebble CEO Tom Collier and Northern Dynasty CEO Ron Thiessen telling who they thought were potential investors in the Pebble Mine the actual truth about their disastrous project:
  1. That this current proposal in front of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a tiny fraction of what they intend to do in the region – which is to turn all of Bristol Bay’s watersheds into a massive mining district and connect a pipeline to the Donlin Mine north of Pebble.
  2. That they have Alaska’s Governor, President Trump and Alaska’s senators in their pockets. (since the release of these tapes, senators Murkowski and Sullivan have finally come out on the record in opposition to the Pebble Mine).
The EIA also produced a terrific short film about beluga whales in Bristol Bay called White Whale Gold Mine. My friend with EIA, Steve Ellington produced this film and was the one who broke the news to me about the Pebble Tapes.

We are teaming up to bring you White Whale Gold Mine and The Wild together toward the end of November when Pebble is supposed to release their required “mitigation strategy” for destroying 3000 acres of wetlands to the Army Corps so they can finally decide whether they will issue Pebble a permit to proceed or not.

We are not out of the woods yet. Stay tuned for ticket information on our social channels and in the next newsletter for this special rally-screening for Bristol Bay!
