Paula Bennett and Shane Jones share laugh at David Seymour's expense - 'He made an absolute fool of himself'

April 3, 2019

The ACT leader missed his chance yesterday to object in Parliament on the speed of new gun legislation because he was late.

National Party deputy leader Paula Bennett and NZ First's Shane Jones shared a high-profile laugh at fellow MP David Seymour's expense today, following his blunder yesterday in which he  missed his planned vote  to oppose the Government's speed of new gun legislation.

The ACT party leader was late to Parliament after spending too much time talking to reporters outside the chamber about his intentions.

"I think David Semour, he's been hoist by own verbal petard. He's out there wallowing in his own rhetoric with the media and he missed the opportunity to make his point," Mr Jones said on TVNZ1's Breakfast. "That shows how irrelevant the man is."

Ms Bennett was quick to point the finger - literally - at Mr Jones himself.

While laughing at the mishap, both also good naturedly acknowledged that wallowing in one's own rhetoric is possibly "a politician's thing".

"Kettle and pot situation," Mr Jones admitted with a laugh.

"Poor David, he made an absolute fool of himself," Ms Bennett said. "It's because he talked it up so much to then walk in late and miss the vote that he'd been out there talking about - does have it's humour behind it."

Leader of the House Chris Hipkins sought leave of the House for the gun legislation to have its first reading yesterday, so it would be ready for a second reading on April 9. It required no objections.
