The hottest spot was Kinlochewe, Wester Ross, which saw 24.2°C (75°F) — breaking the previous Easter Monday high of 21.4°C at Ayrshire’s Culzean Castle in 2014.

And sales of sunscreen and ice cream soared everywhere as the weekend heatwave continued.

Portobello beach in Edinburgh was jam-packed with daytrippers and locals making the most of the weather, with pals Amalie and Sarah, both 16, lapping up the sea breeze on inflatables.

And brave seven-year-olds Alexander and Arran had a bracing splashabout in the water to cool down.

A few miles away in the capital, Amy Loughray and Jackson McLeod enjoyed an ice cream in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.

And along the M8, Glasgow parks were packed too.

Sunbathers filled the Botanic Gardens, while Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock near the city was so busy that friends Lauren Brown, Victoria Brown and Aimee Mackie waited 20 minutes for ice cream.

Aimee, 24, of Hamilton, said: “We’re here for some sunshine and a cone.”

Mark McCluskey, 32, of Bishopbriggs enjoyed the sunny day with wife Jo and son Harrison, two.

He said: “I just wish we got this more often.”

But the balmy weather was all too much for polar bear Hamish and mum Victoria, who played in a pond to cool off at Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie, Inverness-shire.

The fine conditions will continue into Monday before downpours and thunderstorms arrive later in the week.

Helen Roberts, of the Met Office, said: “This weekend has been truly exceptional for Scotland.

"The Easter Monday temperature record fell, as did those for Saturday and Sunday. But Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday will see rain.”
