BATTLE OF BITTEN

Police Scotland officers bitten 203 times by PEOPLE in less than two years – twice as often as dog bites

On-duty officers were chomped on almost twice as often by louts as they were by a hound in the same period

COPS have been bitten almost twice as often by humans than by dogs, a shock Scottish Sun on Sunday probe reveals.

On-duty officers faced louts sinking their teeth into them 203 times since April 2017.

But only 115 cops were chomped by a hound during the same period, according to freedom of information stats from Police Scotland.

Scottish Tory shadow justice secretary Liam Kerr described the assaults as “appalling”.

He added: “Officers routinely help others in extremely dangerous and violent situations and it is inexcusable that they are subjected to attack.

“They must be given the best protection. Any person or animal who attacks them will be subjected to an enhanced penalty.”

Cops now wear spit hoods to help protect them against thugs.

The Scottish Police Federation revealed officers who do fall victim to bite attacks suffer long-term mental anguish.

A spokesman added: “It causes a great deal of stress as they wait to find out if they have contracted any horrible diseases.”

Only London’s Metropolitan Police had a higher rate of human bites in the UK — with 1,021.

Police Scotland said officer safety is “a priority”.
