A Thousand Reasons

Rate this book
My life is like a coin.
There are two sides.

On one side, I am Leela Walsh: daughter, sister, employee at three minimum-wage jobs.
I cook. Do laundry. Contribute to the debt my family is sinking in.

On the second side, I am Leela Walsh: Straight-A student, top graduate of my class, med student.
No one knows of my brother’s sordid past. My sister’s poor decisions. Or that I’m the first in my family to graduate high school.

The balance between these two sides is nearly impossible to maintain. And it only becomes more difficult when I meet Wes McCleary.

He’s never had a job. Never wanted for anything.
And now, he wants me.

There are a thousand reasons we shouldn’t be together, and just one that keeps bringing us together.

Will that one reason be enough?

I decided to put my whole review in a spoiler thingy. I don't want to spoil future readers and I don't want to scare away too many people. So please don't read it if you're easily offended. Or easily spoiled. Or a mega-lover of this author. Or maybe even if you're the author herself. ☺ Maybe you should only read my review if you've read the book already and didn't like it! ♥

And I also know that there are many readers out there who see a 1/2/3-star review and think WHAT? No way that book is that bad - I really want to read it now - DO IT - please. Everybody needs to make up their own minds ... ♥

I'm going to have to un-rate this one, for me it was all over the place, it didn't make a hell of a lot of sense, characters were popping up all over the place that had not had a previous appearance at all in the book, so to keep up was beyond a challenge, to learn that they were carry over characters wasn't really fair on a first time reader when there is no mention of that whatsoever.
I think ones that have read this authors previous books will enjoy this over a first time reader. Sorry it just wasn't for me, needless to say it won't be the last time I'll try something by this author.

Ugh. Unfortunately, the cover was the best thing about 'A Thousand Reasons'.

This one is marketed as a standalone, but it's really a spin off of a previous series. The characters that are introduced during Wes' POV are going to most likely leave any reader confused, if they have not read the 'Becoming His' series. There's very little background given on them and they are all introduced at once, making it confusing. I felt like this one could have had a bigger impact had it been told from only Leela's POV, like the blurb suggests.

The dialogue could use some finessing. These are 20-something year olds, yet their conversations tend to be on the 'stiff' side. Leela and Wes fall for each other? I didn't exactly feel it. It all felt so forced. Plus, it was hard to like Leela when all she talked about was how poor she was. It became repetitive.

The ending. Sigh. All of a sudden a 'conflict' is suggested when there's 10% left. It's quickly squashed, Leela & Wes hug it out, and it's The End. Maybe, this could have come up sooner in the novel? Mariah Dietz could have shown how the characters worked through it because THAT would have been a real conflict.

I need to note that the last 7% is actually part of another novel of Mariah's. I thought there was going to be more story. Maybe an epilogue? There isn't.

Oh man. I really wanted this to be a 4 or 5 star for me. I did a beta read on this one and the author completely wiped most of the original book out and rewrote everything. I was excited for the changes and for most of the book they worked but then we got to the last 3-4 chapters and I felt it was a bit rushed and not really wrapped up. I don't normally need an epilogue but I think this one needed it. I needed to see maybe a few years down the road for these two. Did Wes finally decided what kind of medicine he was going to practice? Did Leela excel and become exactly what she set out to do? Did they stay where they were or jet set off to help other countries like Wes' parents?

These are open ended questions that in some books I would have been okay with making up my own ending but not in this one. I wasn't content with this ending like I am other open ended books. I needed just a little bit more closure for that ending to work.

And although I thought the changes the author made with Leela were good and made the story flow better she still got on my nerves a lot. I understood why she was the way she was but I hated that she seemed to be a huge hypocrite for most of the book. I think I needed her to grow just a little bit more for me to fall completely in love with her.

Wes was still perfect. I was like Jasmine most of the book with trying to find something wrong with him. It's nice to read a guy that isn't an alpha and just a genuine good guy. It's refreshing actually.

Like all of Mariah's books, the secondary characters always seem to stand out the most to me and that was no different in this book. None of them are forgettable and truly helped make this story what it was.

All in all a good one but the ending could have been wrapped up a bit better for me. But I will still recommend this one and this author.

3.5*

A Thousand Reasons is a light, easy, sweet college romance. I really liked the fact that it wasn’t your typical angsty New Adult story. Leela and Wes are complete opposites and you’d think that would be cause for a lot of drama and trouble between them, but thankfully it wasn’t! It was nice change of pace to see a couple communicate. Leela is a hard worker, determined, and hasn’t had the easiest life. Wes was born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, but you wouldn’t know it- he’s very down-to-earth and real.

Leela originally put up a bit of a “fight”- if you could even call it that, when it came to dating Wes. She was so set on the fact that they came from different worlds that she couldn’t see things working out between them. I liked that Wes was persistent with her, but not overly so. Their relationship was a definite slow burn, but I think that’s what I liked best about it.

While there isn’t much conflict between Leela and Wes, there are some issues for her when it comes to family and an ex. Although she’s still in college, working towards becoming a doctor, Leela was pretty much the head of her household, at least that’s how it seemed to me. That frustrated me a bit, because she had 2 capable parents, but a lot of stuff that they should have handled was left to her. The balance of power, so to speak, did seem to work itself out towards the end of the book.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a spin-off of another series by Ms. Dietz, which I have not read. Honestly, I don’t really feel like I was missing anything by not having read it. I kind of like the fact that the secondary characters were just “thrown” into the story, it made it seem like they just belonged, if that even makes sense!

Although I’m not one who needs an epilogue, I do wish this story had one. Just when things were starting to move along, and the connection between Wes and Leela was deepening, it was over. Hopefully we’ll get to see them in a future book?

A Thousand Reasons is a sweet love story about two people from completely different worlds.

Leela has had to grow up sooner than expected. Having to have to work multiple jobs to help out her parents. But all that work has paid off and has helped her in reaching her dream of becoming a doctor. She's in her second year of med school, and in one of her classes is where she meets Wes. And thus begins a whirlwind of events.

Wes isn't your average rich kid. He doesn't flaunt his money. His sole purpose is to do well in school and reach his potential in becoming a doctor. But there's a certain someone that'll invade his thoughts and he can't help but want to get to know her.

All in all, A Thousand Reasons was good. Though I felt it was rushed at some parts. I felt that there could've been more in depth to Wes and Leela's relationship. I also felt like the secondary characters were the ones showcased more other than the main ones. But, that's just me. I don't want to deter anyone from reading this book. It's solely my opinion, that's it. If you're looking for an easy and fast paced read, this book is right up your alley.

This book had an amazing cover and really drew me in, however i found it hard to finish. I am a fan of Mariah Dietz so it is not a reflection at all on her as an author or her talent, but simply did not get me hooked like the previous books I’ve read by her.

It focuses on Leela a student who aspires to be an ER doctor. She is not from the same privileged background as a lot of fellow classmates, therefore for some reason creates a divide between ‘her’ and ‘them’. This divide seems to continue with the relationship formed between her and Wes the main lothario of the book.

I struggled with this book as some things weren’t explained well and I personally felt like they came out of nowhere, like her ex Derrick suddenly being announced 40 percent of the way into the book, but then it being explained they broke up 4 years ago but he’s still chasing her?! It just felt confusing.

I found Leela a character that I wanted to relate to but something just prevented me from really enjoying her story. I don’t think this book is as, I think it just wasn’t for me, so I wouldn’t discourage others from giving it a try.

Reading the blurb I wanted to get my hands on this book very very fast.
And now I'm very conflicted how to rate it and not to rant about it too much.

Spoilers and rant ahead... Be warned...

-I don't feel the love between hero and heroine at all
-characters are 24 but act like 12
-the story was all over the place for example in one chapter her parents don't except her dating some rich guy and she freezes him doesn't talk to him and in the next they are meeting with said patents and joking basically everything is fine and dandy
-money money money - so many times is mentioned, I get it she is poor he isn't; but she is not that poor she has a house, job, tuition, family she is just blinded with luxury that she doesn't have and that his her chip on her shoulder throughout the book; even though she is bothered that he is rich but all of a sudden she gives a hero a chance
- what is up with that part where hero is saying he was interested in another female character but it turned out she was his friend girlfriend and he still has close relationship with her
-we get that same old story in book in order to lift one character up and make him amazing in this case the hero we have to see heroine acting like an idiot at times
-this is spin off of another series...and will also be a series- but that isn't mentioned anywhere
-unrealistic moments and plot of the story- she is med student with three jobs who has time to clean, cook, resolve her family problems and party and have a boyfriend- yeah right....but I would still excepted it because this is fiction, book, fantasy if it weren't for all the other reasons
-heroes get addicted on pain pills, I didn't get way was that even part of the book -I mean his accident and that is resolved like this " I will stop taking those pills" said every addict ever and it worked. To me that is bigger issue the the money which is constantly mentioned and it was like no big of a deal
-ending oh boy if you love good ending you will be so disappointed...it came out of nowhere and doesn't have epilogue but I 'm guessing that has to do something with the fact that we will read about these characters more because it is a series , starting with new leading couple next, and that was the fact I learned at the end of the book

This was not a book for me. But maybe you should give it a try. I read this author before and I like it, so I think she has potential.
Anyway beautiful cover!

A Thousands Reasons is a story about two people from different sides of life. While Wes had money Leela had to work hard for everything she got and in her mind that was reason for them not to be together. I loved the group of friends in the story. Their dynamics played of well and they had me entertained. I liked Wes alot, Leela not as much and I could not feel the chemistry between them. The story was a bit confusing for me at times and I had to go back and reread some parts and the ending was too abrupt for me. This was an ok read.
June 11, 2018
Bummed. The Becoming His series was a really good series and this was just all over the place. I didn't feel any chemistry between Leela and Wes. The money thing was annoying and then at 93% he feels he has a possible addiction to his pills...but they love each other and they will get through it.
I wanted to love this book but unfortunately it just wasn't for me.

This book was a good book. It felt like reading a John Hughes film script in parts with the discovering of who you are and how to fit in. The struggles for the characters were well written and I really enjoyed reading their story. I would have liked to known a little more about Wes and his family background (even though he was the perfect H) and while there was enough information there for some reason I wanted a tad more. Actually -- I am greedy and want more on everyone -- haha.

The author did a great job writing this story with there being a lot story line and some heat but it wasn't the primary story line.

A Thousand Reasons is a fresh and lovely story about overcoming life's challenges and learning not to judge others. These characters are a few of my favorites. I could see so much of myself in Leela and Wes is such an honorable and good guy that there wasn't a chance of me not loving them! Even the minor characters were completely lovable. Jamal, Max, Ace, and the rest of Wes and Leela's friends were all characters I would love to see get their own books. Plus, I would love to see more beautiful covers similar to this one, if this were to become a series!
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Leela has a thousand reasons why she and Wes shouldn’t be together. But none of those reasons matter. They both come from different parts of town. She’s only known what has been taught, about people who have more than her. Her family makes assumptions on how people with more money are a certain way. I liked Leela and Wes together, Leela grows as a character throughout the story. Wes is a cool guy, and nothing seems to bother him about Leela’s concerns. He’s ready to jump in and go after what he wants.

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the connection with the characters I so desperately wanted. There’s something about the story that I think is missing. I think there’s some emotional block between me and the characters. Finding the right words is tough. Dietz does write clean romance. But I feel like sex may not be needed if it’s just glossed over. This isn’t all a bad review. I think that there’s a good moral to this story. That you should never assume people are a certain way, before even really knowing who they are.

I respect Dietz as an author. I’ve read many of her books, and I don’t want this to seem as if I didn’t like it. Because the story as a whole I enjoyed.

Overall, I give this Three Boundless Stars.

I’m going to start off with - WOW I really love the cover of this book.

The story itself, for me, was just ok.

I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but I never really felt connected to Leela and Wes. I loved Wes so maybe it was just Leela I didn’t connect with and thus found it a bit difficult to feel fully invested in them. It got tiring and repetitive hearing her whine and complain about money and their differences in backgrounds, her being poor-him having money, her being judged by what she wore, etc. etc., etc. Yet, she had no problem judging other people, talk about hypocritical.

It was an ok romance with no real angsty moments that got my heart racing and made me not want to put the book down. There was a little bit of something to it that kept me turning the pages, though. Maybe it was the potential for something to happen to make this more, but it never did. I also felt the ending was a bit rushed and wished there would have been an epilogue to wrap up the story a bit more.

I received a free copy of this book from the author.

So there a woman named Leela who wants to be a doctor. She and a guy named Max are in school together and Max happens to introduce her to his friend and their classmate Wes. A Thousand Reasons chronicles the getting to know you part of Leela and Wes's relationship.

As the story goes these two are from different worlds. Leela does not come from a wealthy family nor does she live in the best neighborhood. She has helped both her parents with household bills since she was able to work plus she has an older brother and a younger sister. Wes is an only child of two wealthy doctors who are rarely ever home since they travel the world practicing medicine.

So you can see these characters might have a bit of a difference to overcome, right? Leela has the hardest time wrapping her head around it not mattering to Wes how much money she doesn't have or where she lives. It's not til one of her tutoring students, whose background is worse than hers, puts her in her place does she begin to believe she can move past the wealth and see Wes for Wes.

For some people, what their family thinks matters more than it probably should. This is Leela's case and her parents, specifically her father and sister, make her feel like she doesn't deserve a relationship with a guy like Wes. You might just want to strangle them as you read the story.

Towards the end of the book there's acceptance. Leela and Wes get their happy ending and I think we'll see more of them from coming books by the author.

It seriously pains me to write low reviews on books with so much potential. I just felt like this story was all over the place in some areas and it was hard to focus on the story when every other paragraph was talking about Leela's financial situation. It felt rushed in some areas, and slow in others. I became very frustrated towards the end because I kept thinking there isn't enough time to hash this out. but BOOM it's done. I love Mariah and her work, but this one just wasn't for me.

The cover is as beautiful as the story. I’m a huge fan of MD and love the way she writes. I was super excited to read this one. Its a sweet love story about two people with different backgrounds that fall for each other. It started off a little slow for me, but soon I fell for Wes! Leela took me a little longer to like, but in the end I loved them both! If you’re looking for a good summer read this is it.

I loved this book so much! I loved Leela....I think we can all relate to her in some ways. She is working so hard to be someone....to overcome where she came from. She is drawn to Wes, but doesn't see them working out. How can they? They come from different worlds? They're too different and there are a thousand reasons why they can't work out. Wes doesn't see it that way and fights to show her differently. Sometimes just loving someone is enough to overcome differences and have a future with someone. Fall in love with Leela and Wes....read this book. It is one click worthy.

This is my first Mariah Dietz book. Back toward the end of May I received an email asking if I would be interested in “a new Contemporary Romance, standalone titled A Thousand Reasons, releasing on June 21st.” I was down. I’m always hoping to find new-to-me authors. What I don’t like is entering into a book thinking it’s a complete standalone when there are bushels of people that have clearly already had stories. I was bummed. I don’t like to start books mid-interconnected series. I know that was a mouthful but to me this wasn’t a standalone book, it was part of an interconnected series. I know, I’m being finicky and a butthead, but I really like to have the entire story and I feel like I’m missing things and inside jokes. Does that make sense? I don’t even feel like I can fully blame the author. This is being done all the time. So authors, listen up, if you have people that cross over into other books and jump around. They are a part of an interconnected series add that in at the end of the blurb. Just a quick little line saying that we meet ABC in XYZ. So while perhaps you feel that the reader can read the story in full; we are getting glimpses from other people that have other stories we’re missing. Perhaps these are just my feelings. I just like to read books together so I get the entire rounded experience. However, I’ll take partial blame here… I should have researched the author’s other books before I accepted or declined. This is no affecting my review or star rating at all as I think this might be more of my personal preference than anything to do with the actual story.

Wes and Leela are polar opposites. Leela had to quickly grow up and help out her family. That didn’t stop her from reaching for her dreams though. She has an impressive drive and ambition. I really could relate to her situation. I worked through college on my own dime while having a family and young child and while working full time. Dreams are doable; you just have to want them. Leela shows us what it’s like to work hard and go after it all. Now, Wes hasn’t had to struggle all his life like Leela has. He still works hard for what he wants but he’s lucky that he landed in a financially secure family. They are different. He doesn’t know what it’s like to fight as hard as Leela does. However, they feel this pull toward each other.

A Thousand Reasons is a really sweet young adult college romance. The story is there, the bones of it. Sadly, I didn’t feel like Wes and Leela were the main characters. I know they were but the secondary characters stole the show. Maybe that’s why my rant above was so strong with this book… I’m not sure. I think my main issues were some parts of the story felts so drawn out while other areas felt hurried. The ending I needed more on. It’s an ok light read but it had potential.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

I really like this authors books but for some reason this one just didn’t do it for me. There were parts I really enjoyed and others where I wasn’t sure what was going on. I absolutely love the cover and the blurb for this book. For someone like me who hasn’t read the His series I was a little lost. There were many characters that I couldn’t figure out who they were. For those who have read this series will love this book. They will be able to follow along better than I was.

I can’t wait for more work from this author. I have read some of her other books and absolutely loved them.

Book: A Thousand Reasons

Author: Mariah Dietz

Series: a standalone but I’d recommend reading the Becoming His series

Main characters: Leela Walsh – a struggling medical student, Wes McCleary – also a medical student, but with decidedly more advantages in life.

Plot: Leela Walsh has a lot on her plate. Not only does she have a demanding academic schedule; she also works three jobs, and has to contribute to the household bills and help her parents keep their heads above water. Life isn’t exactly easy. Plus there’s the added stress of an errant younger brother and sister to contend with.

When she meets Wes McCleary, Leela is convinced she has him pegged. A rich kid without a care in the world who hasn’t had to sacrifice a thing to get where he is…

When Wes meets Leela, he’s both intrigued and confused by her cold shoulder treatment. He wants to get to know her, but dislikes girls who play games. Her hot and cold treatment leave him unsure of himself in a way he’s never felt before. She’s clearly hiding something, and the question is, why? Wes hasn’t had an easy life, despite a lack of financial woes. Family, he has found, comes in all shapes and sizes, and his happens to be his circle of friends. They’re unbreakable and Wes is more than happy to find a space for Leela – if she’ll ever let down her shields…

Why you should read it: This book is billed as a standalone, but I’d highly recommend reading the Becoming His series first. Why? Because I didn’t, and for the first third of the book I was seriously confused by Wes’s circle of friends. I felt as though I’d missed some pages of the book or like when you enter a room only to hear the tail-end of a conversation – it took a while to get up to speed with these characters. The book is fairly low-drama – which isn’t a criticism. It’s a story about a guy and a girl getting to know one another, and in the main it was sweet.

What you might not like: Leela had a sizeable chip on her shoulder for most of the book, and it was quite annoying at times. She had a lot of personal growth to do in the book and just when the reader is getting comfortable with the character dynamics, it ends! Wes was a good guy – not overly complex. The biggest thing to happen to him is an injury to his foot. It’s very low drama and as such, not the most captivating read, if I’m honest. It ended abruptly – practically mid-sentence. There were some nice elements – namely Leela’s peripheral friends, but overall, it was just ok. Leela’s parents were also horrid – I thought they were very unfair to Leela!

Rating: 2/5 – I just couldn’t get excited about this story – it was a bit…ordinary.

A Thousand Reasons is a story about social class indifferences and acceptance. Two young people trying to make a difference in the world, yet lost in the background of their social standings.

I could totally relate to some of the problems that were encountered between Leela and Wes from a real world standpoint, but I do believe Leela's character took things beyond the norm and dwelled on the indifferences more than trying to get past them.

Although, I do feel like we still have a very big separation in class even today. Whether it's the amount of money you have or your ethnicity, there are a lot of people who dwell on the differences instead of embracing them. We need to train a blind eye to such trivial matters and learn that we should all be treated the same regardless of our class or culture.

Once Wes and Leela were able to see that their relationship was worth a chance, we were able to see their love bloom and grow into something wonderful. But this was a slow burn, angsty type of read as well, friends to lovers, so don't expect anything quick with this couple.

Both characters are strong and driven. Both also had their insecurities, which come regardless of class, culture or gender. We all seem to have them and they manifest in different ways to others. The only drag in this story for me was with Leela. And maybe that's the point, but it did cause my reading to drag because she was so hung up on her social standing and indecisiveness at times. It's amazing the energy that a personality drains from characters and readers as well as in real life situations. Negative people and complainers drain the life out of everybody around them.

This story does bring an important topic to the forefront though and one we should all stop and think about - some more than others! We are all the same regardless of what is shown materially or visually. Let's be a better person and learn to look beyond that to us as people. One person to the next, no race, gender, or social standing. We have a lot to strive towards as human beings. Let's make it happen!

A solid 3.5 for me.

A Thousand Reasons is a sweet, slow burn romance!

Wes and Leela come from entirely different worlds. He comes from wealth but absent parents, and she lives right at, if not sometimes, below the poverty level. However, for the most part her parents are supportive of her and her goal of becoming an ER doctor.

Wes is one of the good guys. He doesn’t make judgments about people, and he really wants to get to know Leela. Ironically, Leela appears to judge people based on their socioeconomic status but not really in a negative way. It stems from her childhood and the struggles she faced. Thankfully, Wes wears her down little by little, and she makes room in her heart for him.

I really admired both characters, and I really liked how Dietz portrayed them. Leela is an amazing character. She has sacrificed so much, she struggles with maintaining balance in her life. She works several jobs to support her family, and she also maintains a straight A average in med school. Wes brings her some balance.

As I wrote earlier, this is a slow burn romance, but it had to be. These are individuals from two very different worlds. Dietz clearly illustrates that. It really struck me and really made me think about how very lucky I was and am. She very realistically shows what leaving at the poverty level looks like. Leela only used mustard because ketchup was too expensive. She had to call the electric company to see if her family could pay installments so their electricity wasn’t cut off, and both her parents worked. Those things made me respect Leela even more. She is one tough cookie. She never gave up no matter what obstacles she faced.

The only thing missing from this book is an epilogue of sorts. Wes and Leela are such great characters, and I would like to know where life took them.

This is my first read from Mariah Dietz, and I can’t wait to read more from her. I know that some of her characters in this book appear in earlier books, so I’m excited to get to know their stories as well.

I have been a fan of Mariah Dietz from the beginning of her career. I have enjoyed watching her grow and an author and storyteller.   The His series captivated me with their beautiful covers and kept me with the stories within.  Those books, have a few characters in A Thousand Reasons, so it was nice to see Max and Ace again.

Now, onto A Thousand Reasons.  There were truly a thousand reasons as to why Leela and Wes shouldn't be together.  Different upbringings, different socio-economic lives, different bank accounts but there was only one flaw...these two were such a beautiful compliment to each other.

Growing up poor, Leela's opinion of the rich wasn't great.  She felt as though rich people weren't genuine or possibly that she wasn't worthy of their friendship.  These thoughts ingrained in her mind.

Wes grew up affluent, but by no means a perfect life with his parents.  HIs parents were more interested in helping the world than making sure their child felt loved.  Yes, he didn't want for anything tangible, but he did want their love and respect.

When Wes and Leela meet, officially, the sparks fly for both of them, but Leela is so standoffish that Wes has to pursue her...hard.

Once Leela walls were being slowly deconstructed by Wes and yes, there were definite obstacles to their relationship, but with perseverance and friendship, it began to blossom.   This is where the book fell short for me, once this began, the book ended abruptly. I wanted more, needed more, needed to see them have their HEA.  Even if it was just shown in an epilogue I think I would have been happier.  I wanted to see what the future holds for Wes and Leela.  Maybe, Mariah Dietz will bless us with a small novella with the continuation of this love story.

3.5 stars.

I enjoy this author's writing style since it flows easily and I fall into the story within the few first pages. I was very intrigued by this NA book about Wes and Leela as two med schools students, finding each other when neither was looking. And I was hopeful there would be the usual intrigue and angst that is subtle and yet very engaging when it comes to these author's words.

With very differing backgrounds, Wes and Leela shouldn't have happened. But it was fun watching as they dance around the other, with Leela not wanting nor needing romance in her life at this stage of the game. Always putting everyone first, she is one of the most selfless heroines I have ever read and I liked her immediately. And Wes for all of his privilege and wonderful life, was actually quite perfect for Leela, allowing her to enjoy more than just working numerous jobs, studying hard and taking care of family. He gave her the freedom to just be.

As much as I enjoyed their slow burn romance, I felt as if opportunities to make this story a bit more intense were lost. Leela's brother and the unsavory kind of life he has chosen should have been explored a bit more imo. In addition, Leela's prior boyfriend could have provided more distress with his unpredictable ways.

It's a very nice story for the most part but I just needed a bit more in the angst department. The friends that Wes has as well as Leela's bestie were welcomed additions and were definite highlights. But everything seemed to go a bit too easy at times and not enough emotional struggle was evident.

I will continue to read from Mariah Dietz since she is gifted writer and I'm hopeful the next book is more to my liking.

There are a thousand reasons to love this story! (see what I did there?)

From the very first page I loved how easily connected I felt with the characters because of their issues and their real life problems. I think their struggles and personalities were genuine. I loved Wes, he is such a good character, charming his way to your heart since moment one.
That being said, I had a bit of an issue with Leela because for the most part I felt her personality was all over the place, and being inside her head, sometimes got on my nerves and all I wanted to do was smack some sense into her. But of course there are things I admire about her: she is strong, loyal and driven.

There were some scenes in the story that made you feel so many things, all at once, and it was wonderful. Leela and Wes share some sweet and emotional moments, sparks fly between them and their chemistry comes wrapped with a delicious bit of slowburn, and their friends? They are a great addition to the story. The bring on all the fun and the cute to it.

Overall, it was a good book, the storyline drew me in and had the potential to be awesome, but it fell short on me because of how rushed the ending felt, I was enjoying the story so much and then the end surprised me with how abrupt it was. I wanted more, I needed so much more of Leela and Wes.

Having said that, if you’re looking for a quick and sweet read this is the one!

I don't really know where to start with this review. I almost didn't finish this book, but I made myself continue, hoping it'd get better, but it didn't.

There was no plot to this book. No direction. What are the characters working towards? There was a few small things, like her brother wanting to help out the family financially using drug money, but nothing ever came of that. Did the family take the deal? Then Luna, Leela's sister, was being bullied at school so she had to transfer. The biggest "issue" through this whole book was Leela's insistence that her and Wes couldn't work because he was rich and she was poor. And not even halfway in, she decides to give it a try, so that problem is solved.

I was also extremely disappointed when it came to Leela and Wes having sex. There was graphic detail of Wes sucking on Leela's breasts, and then the next paragraph they're already lying next to each other, catching their breath. There was no mention whatsoever of them actually having sex. That's not a deal breaker for me, but after spending a couple paragraphs on them making out and having fun with her boobs, I was just let down.

There was also issues with the timeline. There were points where a day was missing, like we just skipped ahead and there was no explanation of that day passing by.

This book wasn't for me, but that doesn't mean it's not for you. If the synopsis draws you in, give it a try, but also make sure you take in all the reviews for this book.

I loved the cover of this book and I wanted to love the story just as much but have to say that whilst I thought the story had pockets that were good, on the whole, I found it a little too disjointed and that pushed practically every OCD button I have.
I thought the direction wasn’t necessarily unclear as you might say, I just thought it was what I can only describe as cluttered in parts and vacant in others. I thought the bones of a great story were present, but it just didn’t seem to pan out.
I finished the read with a feeling that I had missed something, it was almost abrupt in conclusion, there were chapters that felt as if the author had rushed them to completion and I couldn’t help but think that both Wes and Leela deserved better. I wasn’t sure that they had finished with what they had to say.
I was invested in Wes, he was the saving grace of the book for me, I felt a connection with him that I just didn’t get when it came to Leela, and I have to admit that I think that was because she came across as having a major chip on her shoulder about the fact that Wes’s family had what she didn’t…money. I wanted her to have a little more self-respect, she was an intelligent woman, studying to be in the medical profession, her attitude was rough.
A slow burner that didn’t set me alight, but I appreciate the work that the author put into it. Just not my cup of tea.
