The city of Phoenix is looking at a new development on the historic American Legion site at Seventh Avenue and Polk Street in downtown Phoenix.

The American Legion has been located on the site near Grand Avenue since after World War I. Its 99-year lease with the city on the property ended in February. The city has granted an 18-month extension for Luke-Greenway American Legion #1.

The Phoenix City Council and city staff have are looking at new development options for the site. That includes issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for a mixed-use development. There could also be historic preservation efforts related to the site including preserving the existing American Legion building.

The city wants to include veterans’ services and potentially affordable and veterans housing in the possible new development.

The Phoenix City Council could take up the issue on June 19. The RFP could be issued this summer.
