While the US government continues to snatch babies and toddlers from their mothers’ arms and put them on trial, Brit Hume rails against a lack of patriotism among Democrats, then hastily deletes his rant after a firestorm of criticism. His fellow Republicans, such as those at the Washington Times, still stand by their stance that Democrats’ refusal to turn a blind eye to child abuse is treasonous.
Should you and I be proud of a country that allows evil to flourish? Just a few decades ago, the US celebrated those who defied Russia’s Soviet Empire via dissent, espionage, and defection. We certainly didn’t look favorably on loyal Nazis while reconstituting a post-war German government. Are we not allowed to refrain from mindlessly chanting, “U-S-A!,” while parents wonder what fate has befallen their children in the hands of brutal ICE thugs?
Alas, that is an argument based on reason, and such arguments no longer work on the Trumpist cult the GOP has degenerated into. No, it wasn’t a civil discourse filled with polite, reasoned discussion that cowed Hume into deleting his post. It was rage.
As a easily identifiable public figure, he knew how that rage might manifest itself. No more eating out in fine restaurants with that insult floating out there. No more browsing in a bookstore without a lecture from a mom who rightfully feels threatened by a regime that incarcerates babies.
The Washington Times writers don’t have Mr. Hume’s concerns to trouble them. They can sneak about unrecognized when out in public. But, they’re probably getting more reticent about acknowledging their affiliations, as are GOP staffers seeking reproductive opportunities.
So to those of you who are peacefully confronting enablers of the Trumpist babysnatchers, keep up the good work. You’ve got their attention.
