Scots Tories responded in hysterical fashion to Nicola Sturgeon’s comments about Royals

NICOLA Sturgeon was on the receiving end from opponents today over her comments about the Royals.

But her remarks were remarkably uncontroversial.

The Prince Andrew scandal has made many people think twice about the status and taxpayer subsidy granted to relatively minor members of the Royal family like the Duke of York.

Ms Sturgeon said the Jeffrey Epstein scandal “raises a number of questions”.

That’s an understatement.

She also said there is “a debate to be had about the longer-term future of the monarchy”. That’s what is happening right across the UK. And rightly so.

The First Minister was not suggesting getting rid of the Royals.  And the SNP’s official policy is still for an independent Scotland to be a constitutional monarchy with the Queen as head of state.

The Scottish Tories responded with the claim that Ms Sturgeon’s comments were a “shameless attempt to attract the votes of Republicans”.

In reality, of course, it’s the other way round. Ms Sturgeon answered a question in a TV interview in a perfectly sensible and measured manner.

And the Tories responded in hysterical fashion in a bid to whip up their own base vote.

SNP MUST ACT

THE SNP need to nip their anti-Semitism problem in the bud.

Like Labour, the Nats have members who rally to the pro-Palestine, anti- Israeli cause.

At times, as we have seen with Labour, this can spill into anti-Jewish racism.

Neale Hanvey has vowed to keep on campaigning in the election

Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath candidate Neale Hanvey, by his own admission, posted an image and words on Facebook that fall under the internationally recognised definition of anti-Semitism.

For this, the SNP — correctly — have suspended him. Mr Hanvey initially reacted with contrition, but later ‘liked’ multiple comments on social media attacking the decision.

He is also vowing to keep on campaigning in the election, with a stream of SNP supporters rushing to his defence.

It’s no wonder the Tories are calling for Nicola Sturgeon to suspend members who support him. The SNP have been quick enough to do the same with Labour.

Nats HQ today refused to comment on what, if anything, they would do about those coming out to defend Mr Hanvey.

The SNP must make clear to members they are adopting a zero-tolerance approach.

Otherwise their own claims of being a tolerant party risk being shattered.
