MORE than 25 firefighters have rushed to tackle a huge blaze at a property in Greenock town centre.
Massive flames and clouds of smoke can be seen billowing from the building on Jamaica Street.
The fire service confirmed they were alerted to the incident just after 5pm yesterday evening and remain on the scene.
Scottish Sun Online understands the fire is coming from Pyper's furniture store and local residents have been evacuated.
The scene of the blaze is also near to an old church and funeral home.
As a result, Green Oak Funeral Services were forced to move bodies from the premises to another location in Port Glasgow over fears it could spread.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We received a call about 5.07pm."
"We are currently in attendance at a fire in a building on Jamaica Street.
"There's six appliances and about 25 firefighters in attendance."
An eyewitness said: "We drove past it.
"There were no police there at the time.
"It was scary."
Cops alerted members of the public to the inferno on social media and told them to avoid the area.
They tweeted: "Please avoid the area around Jamaica Street in Greenock this evening due to a large fire.
"We are working with @fire_scot to deal with the incident and colleagues from @GreenockPolice are in attendance to assist.
"Road closures are in place. For everyone's safety please stay clear."
