Motorists in Britain will be acutely aware that breaching the set speed limit for a road will instantly land them a fine.

Exceeding the speed limit is one of the most common offences committed by drivers in Britain and the dangers for doing so are widely publicised.

So it may come as a surprise to drivers that being too cautious could also see you punished.

While minimum speed limits rarely exist across the country, there are instances when driving too slowly could be dangerous.

Driving too slowly could increase congestion and also the risk of an accident, especially in places like tunnels.

You will be able to distinguish a minimum speed limit by looking at a blue circular sign containing a minimum speed limit, and the end of the minimum area will be marked by the same line with a red line through it.

Travelling on the motorway could be one of the most dangerous places to travel too slowly. With so much fast moving traffic drivers risk being rear-ended or causing other drivers to unnecessarily slow down.

Offences for driving too slowly can be treated in a number of ways.

Firstly, you could just receive a verbal warning from a police officer but for more severe offences you could be prosecuted for careless driving.

Careless driving, or driving without due care and attention, carries a number of different punishments.

Points can be handed to motorists with a frequency of three up to nine and even instant disqualification.

There is no set fine limit for driving without due care and attention meaning motorists could be handed an endorsement up to £5,000.

This, however, is highly unlikely, unless your actions justified such a high penalty.
