Cowboys DE Randy Gregory Reinstated From Suspension

Update:

Here’s the official statement from the NFL regarding Randy Gregory’s reinstatement:

NFL Senior Vice President of Labor Policy & League Affairs ADOLPHO BIRCH notified RANDY GREGORY of the Dallas Cowboys today that he has been reinstated to the NFL on a conditional basis.

“Gregory may join the Cowboys at training camp and participate in meetings, conditioning work and similar activities.  Once arrangements have been confirmed regarding Gregory’s clinical resources in Dallas, and subject to continued compliance with the terms of his reinstatement and all aspects of the NFL-NFLPA Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse, he will be permitted to participate in all activities, including practices and games.

“Gregory has been suspended without pay for violating the substance of abuse policy since January 2017 following a suspension of 14 games during the 2016 season.”

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Cowboys DE Randy Gregory has been reinstated from suspension on Tuesday.

“I’ve never been more proud of any individual in my life. I’m very excited for Randy and his daughter and the rest of his family,” Gregory’s lawyer, Daniel Moskowitz, said of Gregory.

Rapoport adds that Gregory will report to the Cowboys for the start of training camp.

Gregory’s agent, Steve Weinberg, tells Aaron Wilson that “this was a long process. Randy has worked extremely hard and is excited to resume his career.”

Gregory wound up missing the entire 2017 season while serving a suspension for another failed drug test.

However, he met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last month for an official reinstatement hearing. Cowboys LB Sean Lee was reportedly among the teammates offering character statements and testified that Gregory has earned another opportunity.

Gregory reportedly passed a number of drug tests over the past few years and spent over six weeks in intensive drug and alcohol rehabilitation in the hope of being reinstated.

Gregory, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2015. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $3.814 million contract that includes $1.404 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $705,000 for the 2018 season.

In 2016, Gregory appeared in two games for the Cowboys and recorded nine tackles and a sack.
