A CRUEL poacher has been ordered to watch Bambi once a month for a YEAR in jail for his role in a massive illegal deer hunting scheme.

David Berry Jr unlawfully killed hundreds of deer - cutting off their heads to sell on as trophies and leaving their bodies to rot.

During sentencing on Monday, a judge ordered him to watch the Disney classic - in which adorable fawn Bambi watches in horror as his mum is shot dead by hunters - before December 23.

Berry must then watch the 1942 film at least once every month for his year-long sentence.

Conservation agents in the US state of Missouri said Berry, of Brookline, was behind one of the largest deer poaching cases in the state's history.

Lawrence County prosecutor Don Trotter told the Springfield News-Leader that the animals "were trophy bucks taken illegally, mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste."

Berry pleaded guilty to taking wildlife illegally and was sentenced to a year behind bars.

He was also given a 120-day sentence to run concurrently for a firearms probation violation.

Judge Robert George ordered Berry to “view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before 23 December, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter”.

Berry's father, two brothers and another man were also found to have helped in the bloodthirsty poaching racket.

They have had their hunting licenses revoked and were told to pay a combined total of $51,000 (£40,000) in fines and court costs.

A further 14 14 Missouri residents are facing more than 230 charges in 11 counties, the Department of Conservation said.

A conservationist told the Springfield News-Leader the men were motivated by "greed and ego".
