UKSG Research & Innovation

Background and context

UKSG is offering an annual competition/award with three distinct aims as listed below.   Funding will be provided to ideas/concepts together with mentor support as required.  Partner organisations will include the New Library Professional Network (NLPN) and Society of Young Publishers (SYP)

Aims

  • To stimulate innovation and creativity in the scholarly communications sector
  • To offer a development and career opportunity for new professionals
  • To demonstrate tangible UKSG support for new career professionals

Eligibility

 

Open only to new professionals (maximum 5 years’ experience)

  • 1 x library community
  • 1 x publishing community

Grants and assistance available

  • £1,000 – for each winning entrant to develop idea/concept

Example ideas include;

  • Setting up a new network
  • Further development of PG dissertation research, building on research
  • Development of a blog/social media service/tool
  • Development of an App

              Potential spend for winners of the competition/award could include;

  • Marketing collateral
  • Event hosting expenses
  • Related technology spend e.g. website or social media development
  • Travel (to undertake research)
  • Research outputs
  • Potential mentor from a UKSG committee to provide support as required
  • Potential hosting on UKSG website
  • Paid attendance for UKSG conference 2020

 

Reporting

The winning entrants may be requested to undertake one or more of the following on behalf of UKSG

  • Potential progress report to be presented at UKSG forum event in 2019
  • UKSG e-news editorial
  • Article in Insights (TBC)
  • Potential breakout session at annual conference in 2020
  • Potential webinar
  • Feature on UKSG website and social media outlets

Procedure

  • Entry by web form on UKSG website
  • Decision will made by selection committee (made up of UKSG, NLPN & SYP representatives)
  • Competition open from March – May 2019
  • Decision on winner communicated  July 2019
  • Project to last 6 months within Sept 2019-Sept 2020 timeframe
  • Breakdown of expenditure required by April 2020
