Brace yourselves: We’re all going back to Gilead in June. (Fitting, eh?)
The Handmaid’s Tale will return for its 13-episode third season on Wednesday, June 5, Hulu announced Monday. Three new episodes will be available that day, with subsequent hours released on Wednesdays.
Season 3 will pick up from the Season 2 finale, in which June decided to stay in Gilead in order to look out for daughter, Hannah, while Emily took June’s infant daughter and escaped. Per Hulu, the upcoming episodes will center on June’s rebellion and will feature “startling reunions, betrayals and a journey to the terrifying heart of Gilead.”
Interesting note: Handmaid’s late premiere will make it ineligible for the 2019 Emmy Awards. “Maintaining the quality of The Handmaids’ Tale, which is impeccable, takes time, and we wanted to give the show enough time in Season 3 to maintain the incredibly high standards that were set in Seasons 1 and 2,” Hulu’s senior vice president of originals Craig Erwich told journalists at the Television Critics Association press tour Monday.
A trailer released during this year’s Super Bowl invoked Ronald Reagan’s 1984 “Morning in America” political ad but soon turned into a mass of fire, chaos and June’s vengeful voiceover. “Wake up, America,” she says in the spot. “Morning’s over.”
The trailer gave us glimpses of characters we know — including Commander and Mrs. Waterford, June’s husband Luke and baby daddy Nick — but no sign of new Handmaid’s cast members Christopher Meloni (Happy!) or Elizabeth Reaser (The Haunting of Hill House), who’ll play an influential Commander and his wife, respectively.
And for those of you wondering about Bradley Whitford’s Commander Lawrence: He’ll likely have an increased presence in Season 3, given that Whitford has been made a series regular.

They probably wanted to avoid the 2019 emmys since Game of Thrones will probably win everything
Still think so? Lol
I reckon it’s more than that, they also get to avoid sharing viewers with GOT.
@Mark Luftig yes probably, and GOT will win everything :D
What a bummer. I was really hoping for April (goes great with my other dystopian fave, The 100). Although people have been posting photos of them still filming, so I guess it makes sense they’re not premiering until later.
This is going to be a very different drama slate at the Emmys. 5 of 7 of last year’s nominees are ineligible (The Americans, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things, Westworld). Sandra Oh is the only best actress nominee from last year eligible.
This is a no brainer, they don’t want to go up against Game of Thrones during the awards season. No matter how crappy the final season of Game of Thrones is (I’m looking at you, Season 7), it’s their last and they will clean up during the awards.
@Deeniyss, I don’t see what that has to do with anything. Thrones airs on Sunday and Handmaid’s Tale on Wednesdays. They wouldn’t be competing for viewers. (For whatever reason TVline isn’t letting me reply directly).
Cant wait to watch hand maids tale
The show is wonderful. The writing is amazing. Can’t wait for season 3
Excellent acting, glued to this show. Never have watched this got they speak of. But this yes is worth my time. Speechless at the end of the episodes.
The Handmaid’s Tale is a masterpiece! It is thought provoking and and moving! It has inspired me to get more involved in politics! Could you imagine if that happened in real life!!! I’m addicted to it!
S’wonderful, s’marvellous,s’magical. Love it
I will be waiting patiently for June to return.
Can’t wait ..I love Dark and the Handmsifs Tale is fabulously DARK
I love this series but way too much time between seasons. People are forgetting what a great showthis was. .
I am addicted to it but just to see how June is going to get out of this and she better come out triumphantly or I’ll never watch Hulu again. Triumphantly means with baby ,daughter and husband.
I haven’t read the book so I hope this is a good ending.
It’s very sad to see that The Handmaids Tail doesn’t seem to be available on the channel where I watched the first 2 seasons. I’m not even sure what Hulu is, but I know I don’t have it.
I agree with Debbie – watched first two seasons on “Bravo” network and do not have Hulu nor do I plan on getting it. I am sad I will miss out on seeing this program. Great disatopian tale.
I am in the same boat. I don’t have Hulu, I am I. Canada and not sure what Hulu actually is. Shame Bravo isn’t continuing the seres. Guess I’m giving up on it. Good luck June
Hulu is the network that created Handmaids Tale? So it’s not too wild that it’s tightened it’s leash on who streams. You can get a 1 months free trial and that’ll cover the remaining episodes! It’s a regular streaming service just like Netflix and if you pay for Spotify Premium its free! :) hope that helps.
Can’t wait love this show
I am super siked that the 3rd season will be coming out in June I have been waiting so long for this this show is by far the best I’ve watched
I can’t wait for handmaid’s tale season 3. I have been waiting since season 2 finale. I can’t believe
OMG YES. Can’t wait…..
Disappointed that I have to wait another two months, but I’m sure I will be sitting on the edge of my seat June 5th!. I have gotten some friends and family into the show and they were driving me crazy asking when it was back. Can’t wait to see what Offred does next!!
I love this series. I can’t wait for the new season to start!!
I am so glad. Wonderful, thought provoking novel, equally fine adaption to the “small screen”
Season 2, this far, has me sobbing after each episode
Thank you for renewing
The ending of season 2 made no sense at all! When June met up with Emily what was that??? There was absolutely no need for that! Silly actually, and for her to return to G town no, just no. I wish it would go up against GoT and others, I really liked season 1 and most of season 2. The flashbacks are a bit much, but I guess you need to piece the events together
