Fenris #1

The Monster's Lover

Rate this book
Promised to cruel King Nøkkyn’s harem, Sol Eriksen is out of options, and nearly out of time.

When she meets a distractingly handsome stranger in the Ironwood Forest who claims to be a legendary monster, Sol thinks he must be a madman, or a demon. She knows she shouldn’t listen to him. Or trust him. And she should not, under any circumstances, kiss him again.

As King Nøkkyn's grip around her tightens, Sol finds her last chance at freedom may lie with her mysterious new lover, the man who calls himself Fenris.

This was a relatively short fantasy read that I really adored.
Usually, in novella length romance stories, I feel a lack of connection in regards to the unfolding authenticity of the feeling: here I had no such dilemma and though not long at all I felt this packed a heavy punch for its small weight.
Set in the fictional world of the nine realms (think of the Marvel film franchise Thor) Sol Eriksen has been promised to the harem of the cruel King Nøkkyn.
After her father's death, her mother unable to provide her annual quota of purple oak trades Sol in payment: Justifying it by telling herself that Sol will be taken care of in return for her services.
It will also mean her brothers get to eat this winter.
After humiliation by some local youths, Sol goes to clean up in the river and encounters a strange naked boy who tells her his name is Fenris.
Thinking he is yanking her chain as that is the name of the dangerous giant beast that roams the Ironwood Sol is still fascinated and compelled to get to further know her Demon as she calls him and with nothing to lose she embarks on a torrid affair with Fenris.
Told completely from Sol's POV this was not an incredibly complicated story but it is one I enjoyed a lot.
It had an almost mythological feel to it that I really enjoyed.
This seems to be the first instalment in what is going to a longer series and I am incredibly interested to see what direction this is actually heading: what a great beginning to the series this was.
I voluntary reviewed an Arc of The Monster's Lover.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

4 'Very promising start of the series' stars

Of all the Loki's monstrous children, I've always felt most sorry for Fenrir. I mean, let's see - Hel got the entire underworld kingdom, Jormungand got the entire ocean to swim, and as far as I know, Sleipnir had a fine life as well. Only poor Fenrir was hideously tricked to be bound. Poor little wolf, he was just a cub then.

I was so happy to hear that Samantha decided to give him a proper HEA. At least I assume he'll get it. This novella-size story is only the first one in a 5-part series about our Fenris The Wolf and Sol, a lovely girl who is to be sold as a whore to a nasty king.

I loved the beginning of their romance, very hot but in a sweet kind of way. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. With four more books to go, I'm sure that plenty of adventures are waiting for them. And I hope we will get to meet Týr. I'm really intrigued by him and I wonder if Samantha changed the significant thing in his relationship with Fenrir. Or maybe it will happen later on. I guess I'll have to wait.

“You’ll be safe under the trees,” Da had told us, his voice rough and his eyes dark. “You kids belong to the Ironwood. They’ll never find you in here.”

This is everything that could be wanted from a mythological romance. It's dark, it's magical, it's sexy, it gives a strong sense of time and place, fantastic pacing. I already preorderd the second book!

Also, the cover art is gorgeous, if you were wondering about it not being on this site.

The Monster’s lover (The Fenris series book one) is a fantasy romance & wow this was a firecracker of a book. A world away from the sort of book I normally read, this fantasy novel really lit a fire in me and I will definitely be delving into this genre again. With descriptive writing and imaginative characterisation, this will appeal to anyone who enjoys historical or legendary fantasy.
Sol is the only daughter in an impoverished family and finds herself promised to evil King Nøkkyn. While wandering in the woods one day she stumbles across a handsome stranger who she mistakes for a Demon. Fenris will become her lover and later her protector in this fascinating fantasy romance.
As well as the plentiful love scenes, I liked the reference to Norse legends like Thor, Odin, Askgard whose names are now familiar to fans of Marvel films like myself. Overall a fun romp in the forest.

Fairy Tale Erotica

It was a good read. I felt bad for the main character, how she was torture and forced to be property to a king. It was interesting to see how she would overcome it. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. I am voluntarily reviewing this after receiving a free copy.

The Monster’s Lover is the first book in the Fenris series by Samantha MacLeod. This is a great fantasy, with paranormal elements, and based on the Norse Myth of Fenrir- the monstrous wolf. This story has plenty of drama, action, adventure, and romance. There is so much to like about this complex, well developed storyline. It is a captivating read right from the very first page- and I loved the author’s spin on mythology.
As with all her other books, Ms. MacLeod spins a wonderfully complex, tight, descriptive and detailed story- which held my attention from beginning to end. It may be on the shorter side, but the contents are anything but lacking. It is a quick and easy read- with a lot happening in a small space. But as usual Ms. MacLeod choreographs the whole thing superbly. And, what’s not to love about this gorgeous cover!
A great start to what looks set to be a fantastic new series.

Thank you, Ms. MacLeod!

This was short and cute!
I really liked the mythology in this.

Even if you don’t like erotica, you can skip over those parts and enjoy the Norse mythology.

Sol meets these famous beings and doesn’t believe they’re the children of Loki, so she treats them like regular people, which is really funny and charming. Then she finds out they’re really powerful beings, but then realizes they’re still regular people despite having powers and abilities.

I didn’t know this was erotica. I just thought it was a paranormal romance. Then she first meets Fenris and they do it in the woods. Lol.

I didn’t like (and this is in general) the sexual threats of male predatory characters and rape. If you don’t like that, then either skip those parts or don’t read it. Of course it’s from the villain of the story, you’re supposed to hate the villain, but imo I’m generally not fond of that as a plot device or story element.

It was short and fun and cute. It gave me an Adam and Eve vibe since their true freedom was basically being naked and running around in an Eden-like woods untouched by all human endeavor. So that was cool!

Edit: update: forgot to add—

Also really good commentary on how we treat people in poverty. We harass people and treat them like trash because they have no money. Then we harass them and mock them and punish them for trying to escape poverty. For example, when Sol accepts her role as the King’s whore/escort in order to keep from starving, a lot of people only judge her and mock her, which I find very telling of not only Sol’s society, but ours as well.

My only complaint is that because this is so short and mostly focused on sexy times, these characters don’t really have opportunities to let their personalities shine or stand out other than being good people in bad circumstances and in love. Still a fun and fast read.

The Monster's Lover is book one in the The Fenris series by Samantha MacLeod. A first read for me, I could not wait to sink into it. It is a thrill to find new and exciting authors.

Monsters, mayhem and madness pursue Sol in her quest for happiness. Promised to an awful king, she is desperate for a way to get out of being with him. Enter the mystery of Fenris. She is unsure of him, and of how he makes her feel.

An energetic, action packed adventure full of danger, drama and intrigue. A highly intense story that leaves you desperate for more. 4 stars.

So this book felt very insta for me. Insta love. Insta lust. These two were banging all over the place, but never talked to each other. They never knew each other at all other than physically. Normally, that would cause a two star read for me, but these are very short and I'm going to try the next one because, we'll, Fenris.

A great read about obligations. Sol is a young woman from a poor family who is forced to be sold off to King Nokkyn at harvest so they don't starve. But when she meets a ethereal beauty of a man in the forest, she can't help but loose herself. But as time begins to run out, will she choose love over duty?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns that I just couldn't put down. Well developed characters like Sol trying to keep going deposited it all or Fenris as strong and sure but with a kind nature underneath. A great villian in the cold Nokkyn that will send shivers up your spine.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like in the sense of nature with the ironwood with its oaks and the rivers and birds and moss and mushrooms to give it the homely feel with its sounds and smells so vivid as if you were actually there. Or the extreme sense of wealth in the big black horse and carriage of Nokkyn against the colourful fields of apples and corn and purple oaks beautifully written.
I aso loved the use of mythology throughout the novel true to its origins with Fenris and Tyr and demons of Muspell which were well written and given the live and respect they deserve as a lovely touch. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars

The Monster’s Lover, Book One in The Fenris Series by Samantha MacLeod

5-Stars

The Monster's Lover by Samantha Macleod features the Fenris wolf from Norse mythology. He is one of the main characters as well as his lover Sol. We meet Sol at the start of the novel when she is basically sold to King Nokkyn to make up for her family's failure to meet their quota. She is given until the reading before she will be added to the Kings harem. I hated that she would have to face this and how her mother began to coach her on things to do to keep the King happy. She meets Fenris in human form after she is attacked by a group of men from town and embraces the short amount of freedom she has left. The passion between Fenris and Sol was heartwarming and exciting. Sol seemed to come out of her shell with him and I fell in love with the two characters. I can't wait to continue to follow their story. This was such a quick and easy read! I loved it.

Another lovely spin on Norse mythology

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by this author and she continues to amaze as she gives us another story based on Norse mythology, this time about Loki’s son, Fenris, the great wolf and the monster of the title. Note this is a complete novella length story, no cliffhanger.

I was quickly invested in Sol and my heart hurt for her when the only way for her family to survive is for her to become part of King Nøkkyn's harem—the king is definitely a character in the love to hate category! The beginning of the story was actually a little hard for me to read, as Sol’s treatment by people she thought were her friends was harsh and heartbreaking.

The only bright spot in Sol’s life soon becomes her meetings in the forrest with the beautiful man who calls himself Fenris as she counts down the days until the king comes to collect her. Their relationship is both sweet and erotic, and I loved how they shared a vulnerability with each other. The looming threat of the king to Sol and her family provides an underlying tension that kept me deeply engaged in the story as I HAD to find out how this love story played out.

Wonderful characters, lots of emotion and plenty of heat all helped make this another lovely read from this author, and I can’t wait for the next book. 5+ stars

Intriguing and unusual story about mythology

The book is about Fennis, a huge wolf from Norse mythology and a poor human girl. She has been sold to a cruel King to be a sex slave to pay her family's tithe or taxes for the year. Her family consists of a mother and two brothers besides herself. She hate the idea of being sold to the king, but her family would starve this winter.

She runs away from the villagers who mock her for her family's decision. She finally meet a man named Fennis giving herself to him. The king comes early and takes her to the woods and abuses her.Fennis saves as a wolf.

The characters are interesting, sexy oh, and giving a different point of view of life in the Norse time. The plot is a simple one but complex with emotions.

The story is a cliffhanger and makes you want to read the next book, which I resolved to do when I get the money. I would highly recommend this as a fantastic book about a different viewpoint in mythology.

This was so steamy, I devoured it exactly as I knew I would. I loved Sol and can see how much potential she has to grow as a character as the series develops. And Fenris is just super endearing. You can’t possibly not love him! My only struggle was the physical/sexual violence against Sol from the king. That along with her family’s nonchalance at passing her off were hard for me to swallow.

Bring on Book 2!

The Monster’s Lover by Samantha MacLeod is an excellent addition to the books I have read by Ms. MacLeod. This story has a mythological component that makes me even more interested in the story. This tale is based on the Norse Myth of Fenir, which is about a monstrous wolf. Not only are there mythological components, but also fantasy, action adventure and a little romance thrown in. Ms. MacLeod has complex story pattern that reminds me of a spider’s web. Everything is so interconnected that not even one pebble is out of place. Since I knew of her writing pattern, I was prepared to read the story in one sitting. I was right to think so. I felt like I was there in the story and riding along just out of sight of the characters. This story is about Sol who has been promised to the harem of King Kokkyn. Sol’s mother could not meet her payments and Sol was the price for her family to eat over the winter. Sol goes to clean up in the river and she meets Fenris. That was the beginning and the end for Sol. She cannot get Fenris out of her mind. You will have to read more to get the full story. I cannot wait to see what is next for Sol and Fenris.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

I would like to warn the readers that I read and reviewed the complete Fenris series together, and this review contains major spoilers of all the books!

It started out well, and then it went completely bonkers!

There are five books or parts or whatever, that makes up this entire novel. It became quickly very weird in a very weird way that was weirdly not pleasant weird!

As most romances these days, it started with sex. Girl meets a weird, naked guy in the woods and boinks him. She keeps going to wood to boink him. Only the girl is owned by the king (makes complete sense) and the king on his black stallion (because white stallions are only used by heroes) comes to claim his 'wh*re'. And then the black wolf (because white ones cannot be monsters, as the hero in this book is portrayed) - AKA heroine's lover - comes to finish

Huh! Who says men don't change for their women?

Whatever...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I give The Monster's Lover (The Fenris Series Book 1) by Samantha MacLeod, 4 stars.

Sol's family cannot afford to pay the king this season. So they do what they can to survive -- the king is willing to take Sol into his harem and their debts will be erased. Sol does not have a choice in the matter, it's the only way her family can survive. Her mother keeps saying that at least she will be well fed and warm all winter, but Sol knows better. The king is a cruel, evil man. With what little time she has left, she escapes to the woods she loves so dear. There she meets a man who says his name is the same as the infamous monster who haunts these woods. She doesn't believe him, but it doesn't matter. He makes her feel wonderful, in every way. She knows this is short lived, soon she will have to give up this wonderful dream. But she wants it to never end.

This was a wonderful paranormal romance book. It is hot and heavy at times, but there is so much more. There is the impending doom Sol is facing. Plus there is her family, struggling to survive after tragedy. Yes, para romance has been done many times, and mythology has been often used for creating characters. But this author uses Norse mythology, which is one of the lesser used ones. I find this very refreshing. Plus it shows so much about Sol. I would love to learn more about Fenris in future books.

If you like your paranormal romance with hot and heavy scenes, but with a creature you are not too familiar with, this book is for you.

Spellbinding Erotic Fantasy
Samantha Macleod has done it again! The Monster’s Lover is one smoking hot adult fantasy, complete with feisty heroine, a handsome stranger and an evil king. The action takes place in the mysterious Ironwood Forest where Norse legends abound…
At the centre of the story is the relationship between Sol and Fenris, a man who is so unlike the other men in Sol’s community that she refers to him as a demon. However, Sol is promised to another, the King, a man for whom she has no affection and whom she fears. Once she meets Fenris she throws all caution to the wind. Indeed, the author leaves nothing to the imagination as she describes the lovemaking scenes between them (they are seriously HOT) in this erotic romance.
Both Sol and Fenris have secrets but are swept away by the tide of their love and lust for each other. We learn much about Sol in this read and how she became destined for the king’s harem and my heart bled for her at her predicament. There is a significant amount of tension between what she feels she must do out of duty and what her heart tells her to do. As for Fenris, both Sol and the reader learn more about him as the book reaches its denouement, but what we are assured of throughout is his devotion to Sol.
The book doesn’t contain a cliff hanger as such but leaves the door open to continue Sol and Fenris’ story in the next instalment, which I am itching to read. Highly recommended for readers of erotic fantasy romance. Please note that a copy of this book was given to me by the author for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

Samantha MacLeod has created an extremely fascinating mythological story packed with innovative scenarios and interesting characters. Taking details from Norse folklore, the author brings individuals to life and has them facing some very difficult challenges. The Fenris series begins with a story about a woman whose life is filled with hardship, and the unexpected way in which she receives some cheering relief. I was immediately immersed with every harrowing incident that arose in the book, while the happier moments had me feeling the joy experienced by the characters. THE MONSTER’S LOVER is an original story with imaginative situations that come across as realistic.

When the family of Sol Eriksen falls on hard times, the only compensation that King Nøkkyn will take instead of his required payment is for her to become his property. One day after leaving a nearby town to return home, she encounters a strange man in Ironwood Forest. Though he says his name is Fenris, she knows he could not be the creature that is supposedly a fierce wolf. As the time draws nearer for her to be given to the king, Sol cherishes every second spent with the man whom she keeps secret.

There is plenty of originality all throughout THE MONSTER’S LOVER, and I came to deeply care for Sol and Fenris. With colorful descriptions and a vivid setting, the author made me feel as though any circumstances that occurred might have happened to her characters. I am certainly wanting to know what the future holds for this compelling couple. Rating - 4.5 Stars

The Monster's Lover (The Fenris Series Book 1)
By: Samantha MacLeod
5 out of 5 stars

The story The Monster's Lover (The Fenris Series Book 1) by Samantha MacLeod is a fantasy/romance book. It is a story that I loved reading and I couldn’t get enough of the romance and mystery. I loved reading about the character of Sol Eriksen. She is a girl who has been promised to a cruel king. She is a character that I found myself caring about and wishing for her happiness. Sol meets a stranger who calls himself Fenris. She can’t help but notice how handsome he is. There is an instant attraction. Who really is this stranger that Sol has met? Can she trust him? Can he help Sol become free for the king? Read this book to find out. This story has steamy scenes that make the temperature in the room rise. The way that it is written had me feeling the romance and suspense. It is a story that has you reading about mythological characters and I enjoyed every chapter. The stranger that Sol meets is handsome and mysterious. This is a book that had me wondering what was going to happen next and how it all would end. The story flows smoothly and I loved reading about the interactions between Sol and Fenris. It is the first book in a series and I look forward to reading the next one. This is a story I would highly recommend.

Short and sweet fantasy/mythological romance.

With the unfortunate death of her father, Sol’s family of lumberjacks have no way of meeting their quota of trees for the notorious King Nokken..with little in the way of money her remaining family of mother, brother and younger brother have no option but to offer Sol in payment.

With a bargain struck and a sad life ahead of her as a despised kings mistress Sol can only dread until the day comes for her to leave with the king.... and being abused by villages and branded a whore.. Sol finds herself escaping to the ironwood after a Vishous attack where she meets a naked man claiming to be Fenris. Escaping the misery that is her future she spends as much time as she can away with Fenris...not believing that he could be anything expect and man who has stolen her heart.

Part one in series of novellas. This was a great fantasy story. It’s a short and steamy read that sets the groundwork well as a series opener. Gaining the readers interest and creating anticipation at what is to follow in the future books.
We learn very little about Fenris and he is the most intriguing of characters a blend of innocent with a heaping protective lover. I’m looking forward to seeing this series further develop and where the story is going.

The Monster's Lover (The Fenris Series Book 1) by Samantha MacLeod was a hot, steamy, fast read, that had me hooked!

Not my first read dorm this author, so I expect good things.. if you know what I mean.."wink, wink"..

Right away I was pulled into this new world and I didn't want to leave. Sure, is there insta-lust, an unrealistic hot male MC, and a overly gorgeous female MC that everyone wants... yes, but hell, none of that matters. Why? Because the writing was phenomenal. For a short read at 110 pages, no detail was spared. The flow was smooth and the transitions near perfection. In a short amount of time raw emotions were conveyed, connections made and dread pooled in my gut, as things took a dark turn towards the end. I almost put the boor down cause I fear the worst! It's been awhile since I emotionally connected with a book like that, and wow, just wow.

As this book is so short I'm not going to give you anything that might spoil this hot wonder. Just know that this book will sweep you off your feet like Fenris did with Sol. (BTW I want me a Fenris) So please take my ultimate high recommendation and my golden stamp of approval, that you will fall deep into this otherworldly book and not want to come up for air.

Happy Reading

The Monster's Lover by Samantha MacLeod
4 out of 5 stars
The Monsters Lover in the first book in the The Fenris Series written by Ms. MacLeod and it the first book that I have read by this author.. This story is about hardship, sacrifices, and love. The story started out slow but once u got into it, it was great. The characters are will written and there is a depth to Sol that wanted me to keep reading. The descripton of the background was vibrant and colorful.
Sol Eriksen’s family has fell on hard times since her father’s death. Her mother cannot provide her annual quota of purple oak so she trades Sol in payment to the cruel King Nøkkyn for one year in his harem.
After running from some of the locals she is at the river when she meets a handsome man Fenris who claims to be the dangerous beast that roams the Ironwood. She thinks he is playing games with her because this is the name of the mythical beast she heard about as a child. So is he a madman or a demon? She knows she shouldn’t listen to him but she is running out of options and time.
Can Sol trust Fenris? Will Fenris let Sol down? Will he be able to save her from the cruel king? Read the story to find out…
This book ends in a cliffhanger and I recommend this book….

The Monster’s Lover
By Samantha MacLeod
Rated 4 stars

This is a nice story. A little heavy on the sexy times. I felt the story was strong enough that a few of those could have been tapered down. I liked the theme going through the book. Family struggle, fairy tales and “what are we going to do now” scenes. I wish we could have seen a few chapters from Fenris’ point of view. He is kind of an enigma and remained that way. I thought he was interesting and wondered how he came to be and what happened to his family. I see there is a free story about him and his friend Tyr.
I felt sorry for the girl-Sol. When she ran Into problems on her trip to town. I was shocked and dismayed. I would have loved a bit more insight into Sol’s growing up and how she actually acted with the townspeople. The ending was...good. Closure with her family would have been good but maybe more of that will come in Book two of the series.

I liked the idea of this short story. There are many possibilities on where it can go from here. This is a first time author for me.

This is the first book in the Fenris series and is an interesting fast paced read.
When Sol's father dies in a logging accident in the woods, her family is left with HUGE financial troubles. With no way of meeting the king's lumber quota, Sol is offered to the king as payment for the family's debt.
With only weeks left of freedom, Sol tries to make the best of her time left and helps around her family's land as best as she can. In the woods not too far from her house she meets a mystery man called Fenris, who she is instantly enamored with. She is promised to the king, but how can she agree to go with him when she can't get Fenris out of her mind.
This story was a tough one for me. I had trouble connecting to the characters and the instant catch fire love the MC's had was hard for me to get behind.... BUT the author has a really great writing style and managed to get a whole lot of detail into a relatively short story. I am looking forward to seeing how the author continues this story and seeing where Sol and Fenris end up.
I would recommend this to a friend.
Happy Reading!
