Celtic legend Frank McAvennie cracks jokes and EGGS as hundreds of fans flock to our charity double decker bus

CELTIC legend Frank McAvennie had no need to say ‘Where’s the bus?’ as hundreds of fans flocked to meet him.

He even cracked a few eggs — as well as plenty of jokes — as The Scottish Sun’s double-decker rolled into Glasgow on the hottest day of the year.

The Hoops ace stopped for selfies with builders and mingled with swooning ladies before he tried to cook eggs on a CAR in the baking sun at Lidl in Pollokshaws.

McAvennie, who grew up in Milton, said: “It’s great to be out in my hometown.

“I love doing things for charity and all the charities are great, especially Mary’s Meals. I just like to do anything that helps.”

The golf fan told how he was on the mend and ready for a game of football again after having knee surgery last month.

Frank, 58, said: “I’m feeling a lot better now and am back playing golf.

“I’ve got a few things lined up for over the World Cup — it won’t be anything crazy this time round though.”

Punters asked Macca for pick-up lines — but he proved he’d given up his womanising ways as he loaded up on bargain dresses for his missus.

He picked up a pile of stylish £5 Quiz outfits donated to us by the retail store.

Workie Stephen Doyle, 29, from Glasgow, posed for a selfie with Frank wearing his hard hat.

He said: “I’m going to ask him what he says to women when he’s chatting them up.”

CCG project manager Billy McGill, 54, said: “I’ll be asking if he’s as good as Ronaldo. I think the bus is a great idea and it’s good to bring people like Frank along.”

Frank joined The Scottish Sun team and St Vincent’s Hospice volunteers in 29°C heat to help raise cash for Mary’s Meals and Scotland’s Hospices Together.

Joking about our host of celebs pictured on the side of the bus, Frank said: “It looks great. At first I didn’t think my face was on it — but then I spotted myself on the front and was delighted.

“I’ve been involved with Mary’s Meals before so it’s great The Scottish Sun is using something like this to get other folk involved. It’s a great day to be out here and I’ll do anything to help a charity.”

Punter Paul McGinness, 61, helped by forking out £100 for one of our signed Celtic tops for his grandson Romano, nine.

He said: “His dad was a footballer when he was younger but injured himself and had to give up. He would have probably played for Celtic. I used to stay round the corner from Frank but I’m not sure he remembers me.

“I read his column and I read The Scottish Sun every day — I actually use the Sun Savers app too and have about £40 in my account. The bus is a great idea and it’s great what it’s doing for charity.”

Pensioners Mary Douglas, 84 and her husband Alex, 85, were chuffed to meet Macca.

And the pair, who have been married for 64 years, loved The Scottish Sun’s Bussy McBusface.

Mary said: “I think it’s a fabulous idea and the bus really draws people in. It’s great for people who don’t get out and about to shops because the bus is practically on their doorstep.”

Some of the cast from hit Take That musical The Band also popped down to our pit stop.

The musical — which is on at The King’s Theatre in Glasgow until July 7 — is based on four fans who have been friends since they were 16 as result of their love of music.

Actress Alison Fitzjohn revealed boyband member Howard Donald was also a huge fan of one of the sweet treats the bus is selling onboard.

She said: “Howard loves a Tunnock’s Teacake, it’s his favourite sweet.

“It’s great to be down at the bus today and doing what we can for a good cause.”
