New website tracks how much you'll pay in Travis Co. property taxes

The Travis Central Appraisal District launched a website to track each taxing entity and how much they plan to tax properties.

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — More than 141,000 people protested their property values in Travis County in 2018, but if you want to keep more money in your pocket, you have one more step: participate in tax rate hearings.

The Travis Central Appraisal District launched a website — travistaxes.com — to track each taxing entity and how much they plan to charge you for services.

“I hope we give (people) the information that they need in order to participate. It has a significant impact on the amount of taxes you’re going to pay,” said Marya Crigler, Chief Appraiser for Travis Central Appraisal District.

The KVUE Defenders ran some addresses. Those of you in Austin can expect your property tax bill to go up next year by hundreds of dollars. It will be at $300 if you live Austin and own a $225,000 home and all proposed rates are adopted.

“Because the effective rate is really the reset button, it’s to pay the same amount of taxes as you did last year. So for most people, if the effective rate is adopted and you don’t pay anymore taxes regardless of what happens with the appraisal value. As the appraisal rate goes up, the effective rate goes down,” said Crigler.

If the “effective rate” was adopted, many homeowners would see no change in their bill.

“You know, elected officials are looking for feedback just like everybody else. I hope people will participate more. I know it’s difficult to find that information. It’s difficult for me to find that information. We will continue to research as it becomes available,” said Crigler.
