'GUN' YOB CAGED

Glasgow yob screamed ‘I’m not leaving unless I’m shot in the head’ at cops as he’s jailed for another firearms standoff

A MAN once shot by police when officers feared he was armed is behind bars after being involved in a similar incident.

John Gemmell sparked panic at his mum's home in Glasgow's Calton in March this year.

The 46-year-old refused to show officers what he had in his hands.

He yelled at one point: "I am not leaving here unless I get shot in the head."

An officer eventually had to use a high powered Taser device for Gemmell to drop what he was clutching.

Prosecutor Derrick Nelson told the High Court in Glasgow the metal item had a "revolver style" appearance with what looked like "gold ammunition".

But, it turned out to be a gun-shaped cigarette lighter.

The incident mirrored another 14 years ago when Gemmell sparked a huge police firearms operation.

He was tailed then for 25 minutes in Glasgow's east end before being shot in the groin after an officer believed he was looking at a gun barrel.

It emerged Gemmell - who claimed he was suicidal - had instead been clutching a rolled-up golf umbrella.

The officer who shot him was later exonerated following an inquiry. The constable had feared for his and his colleagues' lives that night.

Gemmell was eventually put on probation after he pled guilty in 2005 to having an imitation firearm with intent to cause others to believe unlawful violence would be used against them.

He again admitted to the same charge following this latest case.

The hearing was told Gemmell, of the city's Dalmarnock, had personal issues following the recent death of his partner.

Judge Johanna Johnston QC remanded him in custody as sentencing was deferred for reports.

She told Gemmell: "This would have been a terrifying incident. I have heard the steps police had to go to."
