Police Scotland tweeted: “The A9 is currently closed at the Dornoch Bridge due to an overturned lorry.

“This closure is likely to remain in place for some time due to high winds.

Scotland weather forecast – ‘Danger to life’ warning for 80mph storm to smash Scots

“Diversions are in place and further updates will follow.”

Scotland is continuing to face powerful 80mph winds and “danger to life” warnings will be in force from 9pm this evening.

The Met Office warned that flying debris could cause injuries.

They said: “There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.”

And they added that the grim conditions could damage buildings and spark power cuts.

Travellers have also been told that further delays and cancellations are likely, with road, rail and ferry services also potentially impacted.

The Forth Road Bridge was closed down to larger vehicles, and traffic on Tay Bridge was limited to 30mph.

We told last night how some parts of the country on higher ground were continuing to face snowfall amid -5C chills.

Meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "The wind warning extends from the far north west of Scotland down towards the North Channel.

“Gusts will be generally 60-70mph but in exposure, through the early hours of the morning, we could actually see winds higher than that.

“It is going to be a lively night and a noisy night. And with that, we should also see some showery burst of rain.”
