GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gators released their depth chart on Monday for the season opener Saturday against Charleston Southern.
Most notably,
Feleipe Franks has been named Florida's starting quarterback. Meanwhile, the Gators received a jolt of depth in their offensive skill positions with the additions of running back and
Jordan Scarlett and wide receivers
Van Jefferson and
Trevon Grimes.
From a quarterback perspective, Franks won a closely contested competition over redshirt sophomore
Kyle Trask and true freshman
Emory Jones.
The Crawfordville, Fla. native played in all 11 games and made eight starts last season. Franks posted a 3-5 record as a starter and threw for 1,438 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions on the season.
A season ago, he became the first redshirt freshman to start a season opener at QB for the Gators since Kyle Morris in 1988 and notched his best game of the year against Tennessee when he threw for 212 yards passing (19-for-28) with two touchdowns and one interception.
The three receivers atop the depth chart are Ole Miss transfer Jefferson,
Tyrie Cleveland and
Josh Hammond. Florida will rotate Ohio State transfer Grimes,
Freddie Swain,
Dre Massey and
Kadarius Toney into the game as well. Meanwhile,
Jordan Scarlett sits as the top tailback as he's returned to the team following his year-long suspension last year. Junior
Lamical Perine and sophomore
Malik Davis sit behind him
Scarlett led the team in rushing in 2016 with 179 carries for 889 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He started eight games for the Gators posted the highest rushing total by a Florida freshman or sophomore running back since 1995.
In addition, veterans
C'yontai Lewis,
R.J. Raymond and
Moral Stephens are listed together at the top of the tight end position.
Defensively, Florida has a lot of depth and talent returning up front on the defensive line. T.J. Slaton,
Elijah Conliffe,
Khairi Clark and West Virginia grad transfer
Adam Shuler are listed as first and second team tackles, while
Jabari Zuniga, Jacahi Polite,
Cece Jefferson,
Zachary Carter and
Jeremiah Moon are listed on the outside of the defensive front.
Florida returns four linebackers with playing and playing experience with
David Reese,
Vosean Joseph,
Kylan Johnson and
Rayshad Jackson.
Marco Wilson, C.J. Henderson,
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and
Jeawon Taylor are veterans in the secondary. Youth and depth will be something to watch as the season progress for UF.
