Derrick Williams is set for up to three weeks on the sidelines with the calf injury sustained on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Williams' injury, similar to one suffered in pre-season, will see his run of 15 consecutive Championship starts for Rovers come to an end when they host Barnsley on Saturday.

Ryan Nyambe returned from international duty with Namibia on Thursday, with boss Tony Mowbray reporting the full back is ‘under the weather’ after a long journey back from Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

However, the better news comes in that central defender Darragh Lenihan has trained with the squad and looks set to be included in a Rovers side for the first time since picking up an injury at QPR on October 4.

Ben Brereton trained on Thursday for the first time this week after illness, having not played since August because of a knee injury, while Dominic Samuel is back in contention after two games for the Under-23s of late following a groin porblem.

Mowbray revealed the pair won’t feature for the Academy side against Manchester City Under-23s on Friday.

Ben Gladwin is also training with the squad again having not made a senior appearance for two years. The attacking midfielder saw his deal at the club extended through to January, with his future set to be reviewed again in the coming weeks.

“The positive news is that Darragh Lenihan looks like he’s going to be fit. He’s trained two or three days this week without a reaction so I hope he’ll be available for selection,” Mowbray revealed

“The negative is that Derrick Williams, on the back of his goal for Ireland, will be two or three weeks.

“That’s a blow to us, we get one back and then lose another one. That’s a frustration.

“Ben Brereton has been on the training ground but has been ill this week. Dominic Samuel has been getting through some minutes for the Under-23s.

“Ben Gladwin has been back on the training pitch, looking strong, but he obviously needs some game-time having been out two years.

“Generally we’re okay. Derrick Williams is the main concern and will miss this weekend, we might have to move a few things around.

“Ryan Nyambe is back from the international break but had four flights to get back from Guinea. He’s come back under the weather, he’s not particularly in good nick after 24 hours flying and sitting in airports.

“I think everyone else is okay.

“Corry has trained having played 60 minutes the other night (for Northern Ireland.

“We’ll train again (on Friday) and then pick a team for the weekend and see if we can get the three points.”
