Sunscreen seems straightforward enough, or does it? These 8 common mistakes cannot allow your skin to burn, they can allow premature photo-aging or even skin cancer!

Take care to do sunscreen right - your life may be dependent on it.

1. You Use the Wrong SPF
SPF does not mean the percentage of rays it is blocking. A sunscreen with an SPF of 100, is not blocking 100% of the sun’s rays -- only about 98%. However, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will block 95% of those - so opt for the lower SPF.

2. You Don’t Use Sunscreen
Even if you are 4 or more on the Fitzpatrick Scale, you need sunscreen. While skin cancer tends to be more prevalent in those with fair skin, you still need protection. Not to mention, aging UVA rays can be blocked by wearing sunscreen.

3. You Forget to Apply it Under Your Clothing
It’s true. A light-colored shirt only has an SPF of 3, so apply all over.

4. You Forget the “Shot Glass” Rule
Again, it’s true. Most of us don’t apply enough sunscreen to keep our skin protected. Fill a shot glass and apply. Oh! And don’t forget your face - a nickel-sized amount should cover it.

5. You Skip Reapplying
One and done does NOT apply to sunscreen. You need to reapply after getting in the water if you’ve been sweating excessively or every 2 hours.

6. You Don’t Rub in Spray
Sunscreen Sprays are the easiest way to apply sun protection, however, if you don’t rub it in -- you are probably missing a spot or four. In fact, to ensure the coverage you need, spray continuously for 5 seconds, then rub in.

7. You Only Apply When Headed to the Pool or Beach
Wrong. Sunscreen needs to be applied every single day. Aging UVA rays go straight through the windows in your home and car!

8. You Forget Parts of Your Body
Remember your scalp, ears, eyelids, lips and the tops of your feet. Pay close attention to your hair part. It gets more exposure than almost any part on your body -- but also tends to get less sunscreen.
